Yongjing Liujiaxia Reservoir

Located in Yongjing County, Gansu Province, approximately 75 kilometers from Lanzhou, this is China's first self-designed million-kilowatt-class large-scale hydropower station. The reservoir spans up to 6 kilometers at its widest point, covering a water area of over 130 square kilometers with a 55-kilometer shoreline, earning it the title "Pearl of the Plateau." Departing from the dam pier, boat rides through the canyon reveal towering red Danxia cliffs on both banks, with the Yellow River's jade-green waters creating a serene maritime getaway when calm. A must-see is the "Yin-Yang Hot Pot" phenomenon at the confluence of the Yellow River and Tao River, where the Tao's muddy yellow flow meets the Yellow River's clear waters, forming a striking natural boundary. The dam majestically straddles the Yellow River, showcasing the harmonious blend of industry and nature. Speedboat rides (40-60 minutes, departs with 6 passengers) take visitors to the Bingling Temple Grottoes at the reservoir's southwestern end, where the vast waters create a picturesque journey.

Bingling Temple Grottoes

Carved into the cliffs of Dasi Valley at the western end of Yongjing Liujiaxia Reservoir's Small Jishi Mountain, these caves originated in the early Western Jin Dynasty and were formally established in 420 AD (1st year of Jianhong era, Western Qin), boasting over 1,600 years of history. The site preserves 216 cave niches, 815 statues, and approximately 1,000 square meters of murals, acclaimed as the "Encyclopedia of Chinese Grottoes" and one of Gansu's three major cave complexes. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. The caves cascade along mountain slopes overlooking water, connected by winding plank paths. Key highlights include: Cave 169 - containing the earliest dated inscription "Jianhong 1st Year" in Chinese cave art, serving as a benchmark for dating early grottoes; the 27-meter-tang Dynasty Maitreya Buddha statue standing majestically against the mountain; Cave 126's Northern Wei-era Sakyamuni-Prabhutaratna statues with Tibetan-style murals; and Cave 16's 8.64-meter Northern Wei reclining Buddha of Nirvana - the only surviving example of its kind in China.
