Avenue of the Baobabs is a dirt road lined with towering baobab trees. Most of the trees standing along the road are Grandidier's baobabs, which can reach about 30m in height, with a thick, cylindrical trunk topped by a sparse, wide canopy. The baobab genus has only 8 species worldwide, 6 of which are endemic to Madagascar, and the Grandidier's baobab is one of them. Locals call these trees "renala," meaning "mother of the forest." These baobabs did not originally grow isolated on the savanna. They are remnants of a once-lush tropical forest. As the population grew and agriculture expanded, the surrounding forest was gradually cleared, leaving only thebaobabsthat local residents preserved out of reverence and for their practical value. This in turn formed today's landscape of dozens of giant trees standing across a flat plain. At sunset, golden-red light from the setting sun spills across the land, turning the massive trunks and spreading crowns into sharply layered silhouettes against the backlight. The park was established in 1997, and its core area is also part of the UNESCO "Belo sur Mer-Kirindy Mitea Biosphere Reserve." Kirindy Mite National Park is situated at the intersection of the western and southern phytogeographic zones of Madagascar, and this unique location creates a highly diverse ecosystem. Extending inland from the coastline, you can find a variety of habitats, including mangroves, coastal spiny forests, tropical dry deciduous forests, grassy dunes, lakes, and coral reefs. We originally planned to spend two full days here, but due to the cancellation of the Air Madagascar flight, we ended up with only one day left. What a fulfilling day it was. Our excellent guide Ludo decided to fit the two days into one day and we saw a lot - lemurs, birds, chameleons and even a fossa (some kind of mammal). I wish I could stay here longer. Maybe we weren't here during peak season, but there were a lot of times when we were the only ones here, which was very special.
