Lake Akan is the largest settlement of the indigenous Ainu people. They make a living by fishing and hunting, and believe in pantheism. Owls, white bears, foxes, etc. are all totems of their faith. The Ainu Village showcases the indigenous culture, and the small shops on the street sell a wide range of souvenirs and exquisite wood carvings. There is a giant eagle wood carving at the entrance of the village with its wings spread out.
