Dazu(daisoku)A city of caves.100km from Chongqing.From the late Tang Dynasty (907-959) to the Southern Song Dynasty (960-1278), 50,000 stone statues were carved in 40 locations in the surrounding mountains.Groups of stone-carved Buddhist statues can be found all over China, but among them, the ones at Dazu are noteworthy for both their scale and artistic quality, and are ranked on the same level as the Yungang Grottoes, Longmen Grottoes, and Mogao Grottoes. Masu.The most representative of these are the stone statues of Mt. Baoding and Mt. Beishan.Baoding Mountain(Hochozan)It is located 15 kilometers northeast of Dazu County.It is said that ``Go up and wake up in the morning in Emei, and go down in the morning in Baoching,'' and both are sacred places for Buddhists.As the name suggests, there are many stone carvings of Buddha statues, with 13 stone carvings and over 10,000 statues of different sizes.In addition to the richly colored stone carvings, there are also sculptures depicting the content of sutras in a story-like style, which is also interesting as it reflects the lifestyle of people during the Tang and Song dynasties.The largest of these are Daibutsu Bay and Kobutsu Bay.In particular, the reclining Buddha statue and the Senju Kannon statue in Daibutsu Bay are must-sees.- Daibutsu Bay(quite a bit)It is carved into a horseshoe-shaped mountain bay, 500 meters long, and 15 to 30 meters high, on three sides: east, south, and north.First, it was carved in Kobutsu Bay as a template, and then it was carved in Daibutsu Bay.There are over 30 large stone statues, the most magnificent of which is the Buddha Reclining Buddha statue. It has a total length of 31 meters.- Senju Kannon statue(Senju Kannonzo)It is carved on the east end of the southern cliff of Big Buddha Bay on Mt. Baoding.It is 3 meters high, and sits on a lotus pedestal, wearing a crown, with its palms clasped together with a solemn look on its face.What is unique about it is its magnificent composition, with more than 1,000 hands carved into the 88 square meter rock wall.Each person holds a sacred object, but the way they are drawn is different, and no two are the same.Beishan Stone Carvings(Hokuzan Sekkoku)It is located in Kitayama, 2 km northwest of Ozu town.Beishan was originally called Longhe Mountain, and statues began to be carved in the late Tang Dynasty and continued for more than 250 years until the Shaoxing era of the Southern Song Dynasty.290 caves have been carved into the rock face, which is 7 meters high and 500 meters long.The most famous one is called the Shinshinguruma Cave, with the Buddha in front, the Jōhin Kannon on the left, Tara on the right, Manjushri, Gyokuin Kannon, and Nyoijyu Kannon on the left wall, and Fugen and Nihon on the right wall. The moon Kannon and prayer beads hand Kannon are arranged.The statues are arranged symmetrically, creating a solemn atmosphere as a whole.
