Mount Hua is located in Huayin City, Shaanxi Province, China. As a branch of the Qinling Mountains, it is known as the Western Mountain among the Five Great Mountains and renowned as "the most precipitous mountain under heaven." Its highest peak, South Peak, stands at 2,154.9 meters above sea level, making it one of the taller peaks among the Five Great Mountains.
1. Steep and majestic, these are the distinctive features of Mount Hua.
The geological formation consists of a massive monolithic granite body. Through tectonic movements and weathering erosion, it has developed into a unique landscape with sheer cliffs on all sides, towering steep peaks, and rugged ridges. The enormous vertical joints have created breathtaking precipices and cliffs.
Famous perilous paths such as the "Plank Walk in the Sky" (a wooden plank trail suspended on sheer cliffs), "Eagle Flips Over" (a treacherous descending path requiring both hands and feet to climb), and "Canglong Ridge" (a knife-edge narrow and steep mountain ridge) all present tremendous challenges to one's courage and physical strength.
2. Five Peaks Standing Side by Side: Mount Hua is composed of five main peaks, which resemble a lotus flower ("Hua" was an ancient variant of "flower"), hence the name.
East Peak (Sunrise Peak) is an excellent spot for viewing the sunrise, featuring the thrilling "Eagle Flips Over" path leading to the Chess Pavilion.
Xifeng (Lotus Peak), shaped like a lotus petal, boasts stunning scenery and is the legendary site where "Chenxiang Split the Mountain to Rescue His Mother."
Nanfeng (South Peak), the highest peak of Mount Hua and among the Five Great Mountains, serves as the starting point of the "Plank Walk in the Sky".
North Peak (Yuntai Peak) has a lower elevation and relatively gentle terrain, serving as the main arrival point for cable car rides and a must-pass location for hiking. It offers panoramic views of the Yellow River and Wei River.
Zhongfeng (Jade Maiden Peak) is attached to the west side of East Peak and is said to be related to the legend of "Playing the Flute to Attract the Phoenix."
3. Rich historical and cultural heritage
A sacred Taoist mountain, Mount Hua is the holy site of the Quanzhen School, the mainstream branch of Taoism. With a long Taoist history and numerous Taoist temples such as the Jade Spring Temple, Zhenyue Palace, and Dongdao Temple, Taoist culture is deeply integrated into its scenic landscape.
A cultural symbol, it has been a site for imperial worship since ancient times, where literati ascended to compose poetry and seek traces of immortals, leaving behind numerous stone carvings, inscriptions, poems, and historical legends.
4. Majestic Natural Scenery Beyond its steep peaks, Mount Hua boasts lush vegetation (especially in spring and summer), ever-changing sea of clouds, unique ancient pines like the "Welcoming Pine," and crystal-clear mountain springs and streams. These natural wonders create a breathtaking landscape that combines grandeur with delicate beauty.
