Pohatu is the Australasian Little Penguin Colony on mainland New Zealand. For the past 30 years, the family has been working to protect the White-finned Penguin (Eudyptula minor albosignata), the Canterbury variant of the Australian Little Penguin, from introduced predators.

This gives you an insight into the lives of penguins and the chance to see the birds up close, as well as the unique opportunity to watch them socialize on the water.

You'll find the tranquil Pohatu Bay where you'll set out on a walk around the penguin colony to monitor nesting sites and ensure our little penguins are doing well. You'll then have the unique opportunity to spot some undisturbed individuals from our hides, socialising on the water using the binoculars and telescopes provided.
