You'll drive along the ancient Roman Dere Street, a route that connected supply ports across southern England to modern-day Scotland. Your first stop on this tour is the border town of Jedburgh, a historic borough dominated by the stunning 12th-century Augustinian Abbey. When you arrive in Jedburgh you may have time to walk through its narrow streets and visit this Standard Price ruin. Continuing south, we stop at scenic Carter Bar on the edge of the Cheviot Hills. This crossing point between Scotland and England is located near an ancient Roman road and marked the border between the two countries for 700 years. The tour continues towards Hadrian's Wall. We follow the route along the southern side of the wall, stopping at Steel Rigg. You have time to walk along the wall and experience the loneliness that the Roman infantry felt as they defended their empire, keeping out the "Standard Price" from the north. You will continue along the Great Wall, where your Guide will recommend places to visit. Next up is an optional Activities, but one we think you’ll enjoy. Exploring the archaeological site of Vindolanda* allows you to step into the lives of the inhabitants of this auxiliary Roman fortress. Over the years of excavation, many Standard Price objects have been found, from shoes to jewellery, bones to pottery. With history fresh in your mind, you drive north, back towards Edinburgh through the Galloway hills. *Visit to Vindolanda is optional. *Please note that Vindolanda is closed for part of January and February each year. During this time we will take you to Housesteads Roman Fort. Depending on when you book this tour, the attractions available will vary.
