There is a legendary history about Diaoyucheng: In July 1259, the Mongolian army divided into three routes to attack the Song Dynasty. Under the tenacious resistance of the soldiers and civilians in Diaoyucheng, the Great Khan Mengge was seriously injured by artillery fire and later died of illness in Beiwenquan Hot Spring Temple. After Mengge's death, a war for the throne broke out within the Mongolian army, which weakened the power to attack the Southern Song Dynasty and expand to Europe, continued the rule of the Southern Song Dynasty, and changed the world pattern. Therefore, Diaoyucheng is praised by Chinese and foreign historians as "the place where God breaks the whip." The ruins of the ancient battlefield of Diaoyucheng are well preserved. The main attractions include the city gate, city wall, imperial palace, military office, infantry camp, navy dock and other ruins, as well as Diaoyutai, Huguo Temple, Xuanfo Temple, Thousand Buddha Grottoes, Huangdong, Tianquan Cave, Feiyan Cave and other places of interest and historical sites, as well as a large number of poems, essays, reliefs and inscriptions left over from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
