description: Discover one of Berlin's most fascinating yet overlooked neighbourhoods on this engaging walking tour through the Hansaviertel. Tucked between Tiergarten and the Spree, this district tells the story of Berlin's transformation — from elegant 19th-century villas and middle-class life to postwar architectural experimentation and Cold War symbolism.
As we walk the quiet, leafy streets, we uncover traces of the old Hansaviertel: its prominent residents, its place in Jewish cultural life, and its near-total destruction in World War II. The second half of the tour dives into one of West Berlin's boldest rebuilding efforts. As part of the Interbau 1957 exhibition, famous architects like Walter Gropius, Oscar Niemeyer, and Alvar Aalto were invited to design modernist housing in a radical new style — offering a direct counterpoint to East Berlin's socialist city planning.
This tour blends architecture, history, and human stories to explore how Berlin reimagined “the good life” — and what remains of those ideas today.
