Kenroku-en

269 reviews
Kenrokuen, one of Japan's "Three Famous Gardens", which is as famous as Mito Kailand and Okayama Korakuen, is a representative daimyo (lord) garden of the Edo period. Work hard to get what you are today. Kenrokuen Garden is located in the center of Kanazawa. As a garden where you can enjoy the beauty of the four seasons, it is loved by many Ishikawa prefectural residents and tourists from all over the world. Kenroku Garden uses a large number of "revolutionary" gardening elements, and also comprehensively uses the gardening techniques of many times, integrating the strengths of many families. Different from the gardens that can be viewed from the sitting room of the temple or the academy of the imperial palace, the voyage-style garden makes the most of the space of the land, excavating large ponds, building rockeries in the garden, and decorating with pavilions and tea houses. You need to watch them one by one to see all the sights. Because the garden has ponds scattered all over the place and crooked water running through it, the rockery built with the soil excavated from the ponds, and the scattered and colorful flowers and trees, it is also called "rockery, forest spring, and migratory garden".Kanazawa · 583m from downtown

Kanazawa has three major tea house streets that have continued from the Edo period to the present, which are called Nishichaya Street, Higashichaya Street, and Juji Town. East Chaya Street is one of the bigger ones. At present, the style of Higashi Chaya Street still maintains the style of the Edo period. Wooden houses are lined up on both sides of the stone road. The old buildings that have been redecorated are now restaurants, tea shops or souvenir shops. This is a preservation area of important traditional buildings in Japan.Kanazawa · 1.6km from downtown

The Oyama Shrine dedicated to Maeda Toshiie was moved here in 1873. The front gate is a three-story gate that combines Japanese and Western styles. Since it was built in 1875, it is now designated as an important cultural property of the country. The artificial island in the shape of ancient musical instruments such as the biwa and the pond-style garden with a bridge are both worth visiting. In addition, there are statues of Maeda Toshiie and his wife in the shrine.Kanazawa · 532m from downtown

Located in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, Kanazawa Shrine may be small in scale, but it has become a rare cultural hidden gem in the area, thanks to its unique historical heritage, quaint architectural aesthetics, and Zen-like natural scenery. It weaves together the samurai culture of the Edo period and the tranquil beauty of nature. In terms of architectural style, it exudes a strong Edo-period samurai atmosphere. The architectural structure and roof appear quaint and solemn in the sunlight, standing tall after being weathered by time. Strolling through the grounds, you can see moss-covered stone guardian statues quietly nestled among the plants, telling tales of the passage of time. In the fall, the red leaves within the shrine complement the quaint architecture, creating a picture-perfect scene that makes it a must-visit spot for photography enthusiasts to enjoy the autumn foliage. The scenery here is not defined by grandeur, but by its exquisiteness. That sense of tranquility and ancient charm is enough to offer visitors a moment of peace for their souls.Kanazawa · 597m from downtown

Kenrokuen Garden, located in the heart of Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, was shaped into its present-day form by the successive lords of the Kaga Domain. In ancient times, Kanazawa was Japan's fourth-largest city, boasting a "Kaga million koku" (million-koku) inhabitants. Located in the Hokuriku region, far from the turmoil of politics and war, the successive lords of the Kaga Domain strongly supported cultural endeavors. Leveraging its exceptional natural environment and rich cultural heritage, Kanazawa's nobles and commoners were active in gardening. The construction of Kenrokuen Garden was a long process. Initially, the garden occupied a small, sloping plot on the west side. Only with the disintegration of central power within the shogunate did Kenrokuen Garden expand, ultimately becoming a vast garden. The guiding philosophy of Kenrokuen Garden, constructed by successive lords of the Kaga Domain, was the concept of the gods, with the pond as the sea and the islands as its companions. Therefore, within the vast Kasumi Pond, three islands—Pengcai, Hojo, and Eishu—are located, said to be the ideal habitats of the gods.

Kanazawa Higashi Chaya Street is a place full of traditional Japanese style! The antique wooden buildings and stone paths make you feel like you have traveled back to the Edo period. There are many teahouses and small shops here where you can experience matcha, Japanese sweets, and even encounter geisha performances. It is especially romantic when the lanterns are lit in the evening, and it is a great place to take photos! It is a must-visit for those who like a slow pace and love taking photos when they come to Kanazawa!

Myoryuji Temple in Kanazawa is known as the Ninja Temple. Throughout the temple, you can see incense boxes disguised as traps, hidden stairs that appear when you roll up the floor, and a well that was built as a passage to Kanazawa Castle! During the Tokugawa Shogunate, the fortress was rebuilt to prevent surprise attacks in tense situations.

Located right at the entrance of Kanazawa Station, I can't resist taking a picture of it every time I pass by. The drum gate has different beauties during the day and night. Its design is inspired by the drums used in traditional Japanese Noh plays. Furthermore, the huge glass and steel-framed roof at the back is called the "Hospitality Dome," making you feel the warm hospitality of Kanazawa. The Westinghouse Tea Street is very short and can be completed in a short time. There are currently geishas operating here. On the day I went, I was lucky enough to see 3 geishas (the ones on the poster) fully armed and taking taxis to get ready to go to work. I didn’t take any photos out of politeness. Images can only be stored in memories. Next time you come to Westwood Tea Street, don’t be disappointed because it’s sparsely populated. If you see taxis stopping here for a long time, you might be able to see it if you wait a little longer.
