Kathmandu Durbar Square
Kathmandu Durbar Square was once the site where the city-state's kings were crowned, and today, this square is a magnificent World Heritage Site in Kathmandu. The square is formed by the open Basantapur Square to the south, the main temple area to the west, and the old palace area to the northeast. Newari-style buildings with red brick foundations and dark wood-carved eaves are distributed throughout, with dozens of temples and shrines of various sizes featuring intricate carvings, making it a place worth slowing down to admire. Many visitors climb the steps to look down at the hustle and bustle of the square. During the Indra Jatra festival every fall, the square hosts a grand chariot procession, which is a great opportunity to experience the traditional festive atmosphere of Nepal.Nepal · Kathmandu

Kathmandu Durbar Square is a fascinating place where history, culture, and architecture come together in the heart of Kathmandu. Walking through the square feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by ancient temples, royal palaces, and beautifully carved wooden structures. The atmosphere is lively with locals, visitors, and traditional vendors, making it a vibrant cultural hub. Highlights like the Kumari Ghar and Hanuman Dhoka Palace showcase Nepal’s rich heritage and craftsmanship. Despite the damage from the 2015 earthquake, restoration work continues, preserving its timeless beauty. Visiting during sunset adds a magical touch, as the golden light reflects off the historic buildings, creating a truly unforgettable experience.
