[Sayram Lake introduction] Sayram Lake is located at the southwestern end of Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang, at the northern foot of the western Tianshan Mountains. This alpine lake and grassland national scenic area features natural landscapes including lakes, wetlands, grasslands, forests, and snow-capped mountains. Its main activities include sightseeing, eco-tourism, exploring the historical culture of the ancient Silk Road's northern route, and experiencing the ethnic customs of Mongolian and Kazakh minorities. Sayram Lake transforms with the seasons. In spring and summer, flower fields bloom in abundance, while golden fall brings a striking contrast between sky and water. Winter turns the lake into a dreamscape, with dancing ice crystals, pillars, curtains, and coral formations. Ice roses bloom freely, and mysterious blue ice eyes appear in ever-changing forms. Throughout the day, the lake presents shifting spectacles - morning glow, sunset hues, rain mist, sea of clouds, lightning, rainbows, and mist cascades. Sayram Lake covers a vast area, with a circular road around the lake spanning approx. 90 km. The lakeside scenery is exceptionally beautiful. Most visitors depart from Urumqi and arrive at the lake in the afternoon to enjoy the sunset before staying overnight. The next day, they can admire the sunrise and daytime lakeside views before heading to Huocheng, Ili, and other destinations. During the lake loop, you'll also encounter cultural relics such asGenghis Khan's Command Platform, Film and Television City, etc. These cultural structures stand quietly by the lakeside on the plateau, evoking a profound sense of melancholy and timeless grandeur. World Mystery Town

4.3/5
5.7k reviews
World Mystery Town is located in Urho District, Karamay City, on the northwestern edge of the Junggar Basin, adjacent to National Highway 217, which connects Karamay to Burqin. Most travelers on the Northern Xinjiang loop route make a stop here. The area features typical yardang landforms, where billions of years of wind erosion and water immersion have carved the Gobi into towering, irregularly shaped mounds resembling a deserted ancient city from afar. The attraction lies in a wind-prone area, with strong winds throughout the year. Locals also call it "Urho Wind City," with a saying that goes, "One annual wind blows from spring to winter." When the wind howls through the labyrinth of mounds, it produces eerie wails, especially at night, earning it the name "Devil's Town." In 2005, when China National Geographic selected the most beautiful landscapes in China, the yardang landforms here were listed alongside those in Dunhuang and Lop Nur, becoming one of the representative views of yardang formations in the country. Among the earthen mounds in the Gobi, some resemble castle towers, while others look like people or animals. The attraction has named the most distinctive ones, such as "Sphinx," "Tiananmen," "Great Front Gate," "Guilin landscape," and "beacon tower." The "Devil's Eye" at the entrance is a iconic photo spot. When the small train rounds a bend, you can also see a massive rock that appears as a human face from the front but changes to another face when viewed from behind, known as the "Devil Couple." The attraction covers a vast area, with sightseeing trains as the main mode of transportation. Stops along the route include the Sphinx, filming locations for Seven swords and Crouching tiger, hidden dragon, Dinosaur Valley, and other sites, with onboard guide available. Movies and TV shows like Crouching tiger, hidden dragon, Seven swords, Visitors on the icy mountain, and Hero were filmed here, and sculptures recreating movie scenes remain at each stop for fans to spot familiar frames. A boardwalk near the Seven swords station leads to a viewpoint overlooking the entire yardang formation, while camel rides for photos are available near the Sphinx area. Each stop has limited time, but there's no need to rush if you want more photos—just wait for the next train. A full loop takes about two to three hours. At sunset, the slanting rays turn the mounds warm gold with distinct light layers, making it prime photography time. However, the desert has strong winds and intense sunlight, so remember to bring windproof gear, sunscreen, and drinking water.China · Karamay

1.5k reviews
Dushanzi Grand Canyon is located in Dushanzi District, Karamay City, Xinjiang, about 28 km south of the urban area, with accessible roads for vehicles. The canyon floor is 100–400m wide, while the canyon shoulders span 800–1,000m. With a height of up to 200m from base to shoulder and an elevation of 1,070m, this attraction features spectacular canyon terrain. After breaking through the Tianshan Mountains, the river carved out a spectacular canyon in the sloping plains southwest of Dushanzi. The terraces on both sides of the canyon are clearly visible, with at least nine distinct levels. The terrace surfaces feature desert grasslands dotted with wormwood and feather grass. Within Dushanzi, the Kuitun River flows through the Dushanzi Grand Canyon, which runs nearly north-south. The canyon walls are steep cliffs, while the river at the bottom alternately converges and diverges. The canyon shoulders are covered in desert grasslands. Standing at the canyon's edge, visitors are treated to a classic grand canyon panorama. The meltwater from Tianshan Mountain and rainwater carve out these unique canyon views by forming alluvial gullies through the local soil. The canyon begins at the mountain's base, creating distinct soil layers across the grassland, primarily in shades of gray and black. Though fed by abundant snowmelt, the water turns turbid as it carries sediment through these mineral-rich soils.China · Karamay

Also known as the Colorful River Bank, located in the Irtysh River basin, the Rainbow Cliff was formed by natural effects, such as wind erosion, water erosion and leaching, and is a typical Yadan landform. The Rainbow Cliff is also special because of its brilliant colors and diverse shapes. Bright red, green, purple, yellow, brown and other colors appeared on the beach where there was almost nothing after thousands of years of wind erosion, rain and washing by river water.China · Burqin

Duku Highwayis the common name for the Dushanzi to Kuqa section of National Highway 217. It starts in the north at Dushanzi and ends in the south at Kuqa, the site of the ancient Qiuci kingdom. It spans approx. 561 km and runs through the Tianshan Mountains, cutting the travel distance between northern and southern Xinjiang, which originally required a detour of over 1,000 km, by nearly half. Half of the highway is at an altitude of over 2,000 m, and it crosses four mountain passes covered in snow year-round. One-fifth of the route lies in the alpine permafrost zone, and one-third consists of cliffs and precipices. It took ten years to build this road before it was fully opened to traffic. More than 100 soldiers who built the road rest forever in the Tianshan Mountains, and the Martyrs' Cemetery in Qiao'erma was built to commemorate them. It can be said that every kilometer was hard-won.China · Kuytun

Located about 40 kilometers southeast of Emin County, next to the road to Tiechanggou, there is a stone with mottled oil stains and the height of people. Near Maitas, there are grotesquely shaped and varied boulders dotted around, some like galloping horses, some like crouching tigers, the scene is very spectacular. More than 10 kilometers to the north from Mayitas, is a big ravine in the Urgasar Mountains. In spring, the snow splashes from the cliffs of the ravine, and asafoetida mushrooms form a ring on the green grass; in summer, various wildflowers bloom, sweet and fragrant air blows, poplar, willow, birch trees are arranged in green gallery. In autumn, the wild apple forests are full of fruits and bend the branches; the ripe wild apples fall to the ground, rot, ferment, and give off the aroma of wine. foraging in.Emin · 47.5km from downtown

Ulungu Lake (Gold Coast Attraction) is a concentrated tourist destination with marine characteristics and landform diversity. The Gold Coast Attraction is an important part of the Ulungu Lake Attraction. The water area of Ulungu Lake is 1,035 square kilometers, consisting of Buluntohai (Dahaizi) and Jili Lake (Xiaohaizi). The Gold Coast Attraction is located on the east bank of Dahaizi of Ulungu Lake. The silver beach stretches for more than ten kilometers. The lake water temperature in summer remains at around 20℃. There is a nearly 100-meter-long natural shallow beach along the coast, which enjoys the reputation of "the first seashore in Xinjiang". There are also fish banquet restaurants, tourist product centers, bathing and changing storage rooms, cold water fish barbecue areas, etc. in the Attraction. In addition, the Attraction has also innovatively launched the "Sea Carnival in Summer - Water Challenge", opened the Cruise bird island route, the colorful Great Barrier Reef route, the lake center tour route and the sea parasailing, sea carnival, motorboat and other projects. The Golden Coast Attraction is only 22 kilometers away from Fuhai County. It is the only way to Kanas Attraction and Keketuohai Scenic Area. It has obvious transportation advantages. The renovated Golden Coast Attraction has a brand new look. Whether it is the new tourist service center in the Attraction or the trails and Cruise on the lake, they will bring new experiences to tourists.China · Fuhai

Guozigou Bridge

Guozigou Bridgeis a twin-tower cable-stayed bridge on the Lianyungang-Horgos Expressway that crosses the Guozigou Valley. Located in Huocheng County, Ili, it guards the vital passage into and out of the Ili River Valley and opened to traffic in 2011. The bridge is approx. 700m long, and the deck is approx. 200m above the valley floor. Two high towers rise from the valley slopes, with cable stays fanning out to span the deep valley. After the bridge spans the valley, vehicles no longer need to detour along the valley floor, and this stretch of road has become an impressive sight for many traveling to and from Ili. This bridge is particularly striking: because of the continuous mountains on both sides, the bridge is built in an S shape following the valley's terrain. Viewed from nearby slopes, the bridge winds through spruce forests and wildflowers, framed by the valley and distant mountains. In late spring and early summer, the valley is lush and wildflowers are in full bloom. When the light hits at an angle in the early morning or evening, the bridge's silhouette is particularly distinct, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts. To see the full view, you usually need to go around to the south gate side of Sayram Lake and head to the Guozigou Jinding Observation Deck area along the old national highway. There are multiple observation platforms and connected wooden boardwalks there, where you can walk to capture the S-shaped bridge, the valley, and the spruce trees in your lens. Most tourists arrange to stop here while visiting Sayram Lake on the same route, making for a more relaxed itinerary.China · Huocheng

Baisha Lake is located in the 185th Regiment's 3rd Company on the northwest side of Habahe County (in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, a regiment and company refer to specific areas, with a company being roughly equivalent to a village). It is about 70 kilometers from Habahe County and 160 kilometers from Buerjin County. Surrounded by desert, Baisha Lake is a tranquil oasis with lush trees along its shores and shimmering waters, creating a striking contrast. Autumn is the peak season for visiting Baisha Lake, with vibrant red and yellow foliage perfect for photography. Summer is also a good time to visit, as you can see rare lotus flowers in the lake. However, it is very cold in winter and early spring, with the lake frozen over, making it unsuitable for visits. The entrance to Baisha Lake Scenic Area is located along the Z840 road, about 2 kilometers from the lake. Visitors can walk or take a round-trip electric shuttle for 10 RMB (the shuttle runs continuously, and you can take any available one for the return trip). Once at the lake, you can stroll along the wooden boardwalk, which is about 1 kilometer long, offering scenic views of the lake and its surroundings. The boardwalk ends at a viewing platform with a broad view of the lake and a sand dune reflected in the water, making it an ideal spot for photography. On the way back to the entrance, it is recommended to walk, as there is a sand dune with a pavilion at the top, offering panoramic views of the nearby Kazakhstani landscape. The pavilion is about a 15-minute walk from the road. Near the entrance, there is also a small birch forest, perfect for a leisurely walk and photos. Visiting Baisha Lake typically takes about 3 hours. After the tour, visitors usually dine near the scenic area. Opposite the entrance is the 3rd Company of the 185th Regiment, where residents, originally from inland China, grow vegetables and run small restaurants. The authentic, mildly flavored Han Chinese farmhouse dishes offer a welcome change from the heavily spiced local cuisine, and the meals are affordable and delicious. In summer and autumn, you can even pick fresh vegetables directly from the garden.China · Habahe

The Bayimuza Grassland in Emin County is located on the southern foot of Tarbagatai Mountain. The grassland is not big but very beautiful. It not only has the Ten Mile Flowery Slope and the Nine Bends and Eighteen Turns, but also the magical bottomless lake. Its magic lies in the fact that there is a lonely lake in the vast grassland, with neither entrance nor exit. Snow water does not enter the lake in winter, and the water level neither rises nor falls over the years. Someone once tried to measure the bottom of the lake with a big rope, but could not reach the bottom after throwing it down hundreds of meters.

Karamay's World Devil City is a Yardang landform sculpted by wind and sand over millions of years. A ride on the scenic train through the Gobi Desert reveals uniquely shaped rock formations rising from the barren landscape. The wind howls through the ravines, giving the place its name, "Devil City." At sunset, the changing light and shadow bathe the hills in a warm gold, creating a desolate yet breathtaking scene. The area possesses a vast, wild atmosphere, perfect for photography. Remember to bring sun and wind protection; it's a must-see natural wonder on the Northern Xinjiang loop.

It's not far from the Duku Highway Museum. The ticket price is reasonable, and you can go in to see the unique landforms. The cliffs are like huge steps, covered with wrinkles that look like they were carved by a knife and axe, giving it a very cold and desolate visual appearance.

The scenic area is small, not far from Burqin County. It features typical cliff-style Yardang landforms, with rock layers displaying vibrant colors of red, yellow, purple, and green due to varying mineral composition. On the opposite bank are a river valley oasis and poplar forests. At sunset in October, the combination of the sunset and the golden poplar forests on the opposite bank creates an exceptionally high saturation of colors.

Ulungur Lake, located in Fuhai County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, is the largest inland freshwater lake in northern Xinjiang and one of China's ten largest inland freshwater lakes. The lake comprises two parts: Ulungur Lake (a large, saltwater lake) in the north and Jili Lake (a small, freshwater lake) in the south, covering a total area of approximately 1035 square kilometers. Situated deep in the Gobi Desert of the Junggar Basin, it is known as the "Gobi Sea" and "the sea furthest from the sea." Ulungur Lake integrates lakes, wetlands, Gobi Desert, and Yardang landforms, boasting silver-white sand beaches on its golden coast, the "Sea Devil City" Yardang landforms along Jili Lake, and rich wetland ecology, making it an important stopover point for migratory birds. At the same time, Ulungur Lake is the largest natural fishing ground in northern Xinjiang, abundant in high-quality cold-water fish such as pike and Baikal wrasse, and its winter fishing culture is highly distinctive. With its magnificent scenery, it serves as an important ecological barrier and tourist destination in northern Xinjiang.
