Mo'erdaoga National Forest Park

Mo'erdaoga National Forest Park

7
4.5/5
1.9k reviews
Mo'erdaoga National Forest Park is located deep in the pristine forests of the northern Greater Khingan Range. "Mo'erdaoga" means "warhorse setting off on a campaign" in Mongolian. Bordered by Hulunbuir Grassland to the south and the China-Russia border river Ergun to the north, it's one of China's larger forest parks. The park preserves intact cold-temperate bright coniferous virgin forests, primarily composed of Daurian larch as the dominant species, interspersed with birch and Mongolian pine groves. Known as the "hometown of larches," its forests are home to wildlife like red deer, roe deer, and squirrels, earning the saying "Xishuangbanna in the south, Mo'erdaoga in the north." Every fall, when larches turn yellow and birches golden, the forest transforms into autumn hues dominated by orange-red and gold—an ideal time to experience northern autumn charm. Near the entrance, visitors can board a forest sightseeing train with wooden carriages that slowly traverses nearly 10 km of tracks through the woods, stopping at stations like Pine melody in forest sea, Garden forest sea, Streamside woods, and Forest pasture, with the final stop offering access to Ewenki traditional dwellings called "cuoluozi" and close encounters with reindeer and sika deer. For self-drive or private charter tours along the scenic route deeper into the forest, attractions include Red bean slope, Dwarf pine path, Deer trail, Nine-ridge view, Hunter's path, Ice forest, and Ewenki reindeer tribe: Red bean slope features lingonberry shrubs (called "northern red beans") growing beneath pines, with edible berries and frequent squirrel activity; Nine-ridge view's mountaintop platform offers panoramic vistas to count distant ridges; Ice forest grows on permafrost glacial remnants where stunted, twisted larches covered in moss and lichen—nicknamed "old man trees"—create peculiar shapes. At the route's end, White deer island is formed by the swift-flowing Jiuliu River encircling two islets (Grey wolf and White deer) in an "S" shape, inspired by a Mongolian legend of wolf and deer transforming into islands. The islets' pine-dark and birch-orange foliage with abundant lingonberries create particularly vibrant fall colors favored by photographers, while nearby "Nine-bend pine wind" rafting along the Jiuliu River offers adventure. Additionally, the first bridge encountered upon entering was featured in scenes from the film The banquet—visitors may slow down to spot familiar cinematic views.Ergun · >100km from downtown

The Ergun River flows through it, and on the other side of the river is the quiet town of Oroch. Most of the residents of Shiwei retain relatively intact foreign culture and living customs. You can experience exotic customs without going abroad. The locals are good at herding, fishing, wheat and vegetables. Lieba, wild jam, Gregory Da, and Grid Xili are their special snacks. They live in typical houses in their country, all of which are made of "wooden carvings" made of butt-jointed logs. There is a Friendship Bridge at Shiwei Port. Heishantou Town is called "Halataolagai" in Mongolian, named after the black mountain range to the northeast of the town. It blends grasslands, wetlands, boundary rivers, and ancient city ruins into a single grassland view. Horseback riding to watch the sunset is a common local experience. There are many horse farms on the outskirts of the town. Herders lead Sanhe horses, and horsemen guide you into the grassland to climb high slopes and watch the sunset, where the grasslands, wetlands, and boundary rivers complement each other in the twilight. If you prefer not to ride a horse, you can also self-drive or walk up the slope to enjoy the view. You can also see elements of grassland life in town, such as yurts, and in the early morning, you can observe daily scenes like herders milking horses and repairing saddles. Heading north along the border road by the boundary river, you can enjoy the view of the river intertwined with the grasslands. The ruins of the ancient Heishantou City still remain on the outskirts of the town, with earthen walls that are still faintly visible, showcasing the blend of local historical relics and the grassland view.Ergun · 42.9km from downtown

It's worth a visit. Take the mini-train first, then drive yourself. The day I went, it was cloudy in the forest, so the photos didn't turn out well, but the scenery was still quite nice. Because it was so cold, we didn't stop much along the way. The drive back to Moerdaoga Town from the exit is 37 kilometers, but the scenery along the way is also beautiful.

The boardwalks are comfortable for hiking, providing opportunities to observe a rich variety of flora and fauna. The park is large, requiring a considerable amount of time to explore; the best time for photography is in the early morning or late afternoon light.

Highly recommend this natural scenic area! Although it got cold early this year, and the birch forest leaves had mostly fallen by October, the golden leaves scattered on the ground reflecting the sunlight were still incredibly beautiful. There were also many adorable chipmunks begging for food, and we left a wishing plaque. I can already imagine the beauty of midsummer and golden autumn; I'll definitely come back to experience it again!

I opted for the unlimited ride pass, and it was indeed incredibly thrilling! I went three times, definitely worth the price. I was initially worried about being scared, but the experience was anything but. I was even taking tons of photos the whole way. The pass included a round trip on the mini-train, which was a lifesaver. The scenery on the return train was absolutely breathtaking – endless grasslands under blue skies and white clouds – words can't describe it!

The Boundary River is quite beautiful. The boat cruises near the center of the river, very close to the Russian side, allowing for stunning views of both sides. Once on board, you can rent a telescope for a reasonable price, which gives you a clear view of the buildings on the other side. Also, during the cruise, passengers can go up to the second deck in two batches: those who want to see more of the Russian side's buildings are in the first group; those who want to see the Sino-Russian Friendship Bridge are in the second group. After crossing the Sino-Russian Friendship Bridge, the boat turns back, and all passengers must disembark and return to their cabins.

When talking about Inner Mongolia, many people will think of Hulunbuir, but many people don't know that there is a place called Enhe hidden in Hulunbuir. It is a border between China and Russia. Although it is located in the border area, the scenery here is very beautiful. In autumn, the grassland gradually turns yellow, the forest in the distance is windy and surging, the clouds are clear and the air is refreshing, and the mountains are colorful. Moreover, the houses in Enhe are very distinctive, and the exotic cabins really make you feel like you have come to a foreign country in an instant, with a unique style.

When I went to Zhuiqiu at the end of September, they said it would be closing in ten days. There were fewer people than in the summer, so there were hardly any queues, and I could enjoy everything without having to wait in line.

It costs 40 yuan per person for a walk, and there are dozens of people on a boat. It would be nice if there was an explanation or a radio broadcast. I would just suggest it. The scenery is beautiful, but the boat driver may be bored and impatient, and keeps selling telescopes.
