Budapest Danube Boat Tour

The city of Budapest is divided into two by the Danube River, and has the reputation of "Pearl of the Danube". Board a sightseeing cruise and enjoy the views from the deck along this legendary river. The verdant forest, the majestic baroque palace, the ancient and mysterious Matthias Church, which is more than 700 years old, the opera house loved by Princess Sissi, the Fisherman's Bastion, which symbolizes the seven tribes, tells the vicissitudes of thousands of years. The beautiful scenery unfolded in front of me without reservation. At dusk, the sky is gorgeous and quiet. The crimson sunset and the Danube River form a strange picture. The lights on both sides of the river are gradually rising. This is the night in Budapest, like a soft waltz accompanied by a blue Danube River.Budapest · 40.2km from Esztergom

Fisherman's Bastion

4.7/5
656 reviews
The Fisherman's Bastion is located on the Castle Hill on the Buda side. It is a fortress named in memory of the fishermen who defended the Danube in the past. It is known as the three most shocking buildings in Hungary together with the Hungarian Parliament Building and the National Opera House. It also overlooks the Danube and overlooks the Lookout point for views of the Perth district. Historical background The Fisherman's Bastion stands on the Danube River, adjacent to the Matthias Church. It was built in 1895 and took six years to complete. This double-storey gray-white building is centered on the white minaret of the neo-Roman style. Together with several surrounding round towers, it represents the ancestral tribes of Hungary. The towers are connected by cloisters, like a labyrinth, which looks like a Disney Logo from a distance. in the castle. Several bronze statues on the Fisherman's Bastion are also quite eye-catching. One of the more famous is a horse-riding bronze statue of a Hungarian king. It was built in 1906 and is located between Matthias Church and Fisherman's Castle. The relief on the pedestal shows The king's life story. The guided tour of the Fisherman's Bastion has many steps and walking paths, and you can enjoy the scenery along the way as you climb the steps. Fisherman's Bastion has many high tower viewing platforms. It doesn't matter if it encounters windy, rainy weather, etc. The arched cloister of the viewing platform is a good shelter from the rain and summer. Take a break on the bench. Overlooking the scenery Standing on the Fisherman's Bastion, you can see the magnificent views that you can't even see from the top of the castle: the Danube, Margaret Island, the Chain Bridge, the Hungarian Parliament Building and the Freedom Hill are all in sight. The Fisherman's Bastion at night is also full of unique charm, and everything around is particularly charming under the illumination of special lights. The performance of street performers on the platform adds to the mood. It is also very romantic to come here to watch the night view. You can see many couples dating here. It is said that most of the first kisses of local young people happened here. The restaurant with the same name of the Fisherman's Bastion has seats in the north and south corridors of the Fisherman's Bastion. The dining environment is very good. The restaurant has a terrace on the high tower. Drinking coffee there and looking at the beautiful surrounding scenery is a pleasure. enjoy.Budapest · 38.6km from Esztergom

At the heart of the area is the Baroque-style royal palace built into the hillside, which now houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum / Castle Museum. From the palace terrace, you can take in the panoramic view of the Danube and the city skyline of the Pest district on the opposite bank. Matthias Church

7.7
4.5/5
366 reviews
Matthias Church is located on Castle Hill in Budapest and is a neo-Gothic church. The artistic minaret and bell tower on the south side and the magnificent church vault are worth savoring. Historical background In the 13th century, the king ordered the construction of this church at the same time as the construction of the palace. In the 15th century, King Matthias I rebuilt the iconic minaret and bell tower on the south side, and the church was called Matthias Church after that. Since the kings of all dynasties were crowned here, the church is also known as the "Coronation Church". After the Turkish invasion, the church was converted into a mosque, and after several reconstructions, it has formed a multi-faceted style. Architectural pattern The architectural pattern of the Matthias Church is asymmetrically distributed and very consistent. The west façade of the church is decorated with the iconic Gothic rose window, and the south façade is the main entrance of the Matthias Church, with two large gates. The gate of Mary near the tower is carved with the sleeping Virgin Mary. The image of Leah, which is also the relatively complete part of the medieval building preserved in the Matthias Church. There are towering spires on both sides of the Minaret and Bell Tower. The more striking one is the Minaret and Bell Tower on the south side. This highly artistic tower has five floors, and the bottom two floors retain the square style when it was built in the early 13th century. The upper three floors are octagonal, and the towering top of the tower is like a sharp sword straight into the sky. The shield of King Matthias is stored on the third floor of the tower, and the three surviving ancient bells of the church are also stored here, the larger one weighing 3.2 tons. The vaults of the vaulted churches are also very impressive. The vaults are all inlaid with mosaics, and the beautiful patterns formed are particularly dazzling in the sun. There is also a crow statue on the top of the church. According to legend, during the reign of King Matthias, someone tried to plot against him with a poison ring, but the poison ring was taken away by the flying crow. Since then, the crow has become a symbol of auspiciousness in Hungary. The interior of the church is decorated with exquisite frescoes, and the light inside the church through the stained glass is beautiful. Several flags hang from the pillars in the main hall of the church. The main hall is spacious and bright. This huge project was completed in the 14th century and contains the tombs of the Hungarian emperor and his wife. There is a main altar on the west side of the church, which is richly decorated with exquisite details. The paintings on both sides of the golden cross depict the story of the Virgin Mary. There is a museum in the basement on the north side of the Matthias Church, which displays the items that were used by the kings and bishops of the past dynasties and the treasures inherited by the church. You can go and see it. Enjoying music In addition, Matthias Church is also famous for its acoustics, and the music played by its pipe organ is elegant and solemn. Now the church often hosts concerts. At Mass on Sunday, there will also be a wonderful performance by the choir, if you come across it, be sure to listen to it. After visiting the Matthias Church, you can go to the adjacent Fisherman's Bastion to overlook the beauty of the Buda District.Budapest · 38.6km from Esztergom

Széchenyi Thermal Bath

7.7
4.4/5
188 reviews
Budapest is known as one of the few spa cities in Europe, with a bathing tradition dating back over two thousand years to the Roman era. The Széchenyi Thermal Bath, located in the city park, is a representative of this tradition. Built and opened in 1913, the pale yellow neo-baroque palace surrounds the outdoor pools, where the steaming water contrasts with the classical facade, creating a highly recognizable landmark in the park. The thermal water here is sourced from deep geothermal wells, with high temperatures and rich in various minerals, making it one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The bathhouse consists of three outdoor pools and over a dozen indoor pools: the outdoor area features a hot spring sitting pool, an experience pool with a circular whirlpool flow, and a standard swimming pool, while the indoor side houses pools of varying temperatures along with sauna rooms and steam chambers. In the outdoor hot spring pools, it's common to see chess enthusiasts floating boards on the water and playing games while half-submerged in the warm water—a scene that has persisted for years and draws many travelers specifically to witness this classic sight. Even in winter, the outdoor pools remain steamy, with the chilly air outside contrasting the mist rising from the water's surface, making for a uniquely soothing soak in the snow. As night falls, the interplay of lights and steam creates an equally delightful atmosphere for an evening dip. Swimwear is required for entry. Towels, slippers, and swim caps can be rented on-site, and swim caps are usually required in the pool area. Weekends and daytime tend to be crowded, so those seeking a quieter experience may opt for early morning or evening visits. Subway line 1 has a station right in front of the bathhouse, making it very convenient to reach from downtown.Budapest · 39.3km from Esztergom

City Park is adjacent to Heroes' Square and is an important public green space in the center of Budapest, as well as one of the earliest established city parks, with a history dating back to the early 19th century. During the Middle Ages, this area was the hunting ground of King Matthias and was later used as a meeting place for the parliament. The park centers around an artificial lake, which offers boating in the summer and transforms into an open-air ice rink in the winter, with different scenery throughout the seasons. Standing on the island in the lake is Vajdahunyad Castle, built for the 1896 Hungarian Millennium Celebration, which blends various architectural styles including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The park also brings together facilities such as the Széchenyi Thermal Bath, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, and theCapital Circus of Budapest, covering a variety of activities including thermal bath experiences, family-friendly tours, and cultural performances.Budapest · 39.5km from Esztergom

Buda Castle

Buda Castle stands majestically atop Castle Hill as one of the landmarks of Budapest. It once served as the residence of the Hungarian royal family. Today, the central part of the palace has been converted into the Budapest History Museum, the National Library, and the National Gallery. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. History The castle was first built in the 13th century under the direction of King Béla IV after the Mongol invasion. It subsequently endured destruction during the Ottoman occupation, multiple wars, and post-renovation devastation in World War II, making its history truly tumultuous. The palace we see today is its restored form after the war. Architectural styleThe architectural style combines Baroque and Gothic elements in a hybrid palace, grand in scale, with its main facade supported by Greek Corinthian columns. The exterior walls feature alternating red and white hues, while the Baroque-style green dome atop the facade is particularly striking. Visitor guide Passing through the lion gate into the courtyard, you can see the Matthias fountain, which depicts a hunting scene of King Matthias leading his entourage, with vivid postures of both the figures and the hounds. On the terrace overlooking the Danube stands the bronze statue of the mythical Turul bird, said to have guided the ancestors of the Magyars to this land, its talons clutching the "Sword of Attila." On one side of the terrace stands the equestrian statue of Prince Eugene, facing the Danube. At the entrance of the Budapest history museum, the bronze statues "War and peace" flanking the doorway symbolize war and peace through angelic figures, also worthy of close observation. The interior is also worth spending time on: the Hungarian National Gallery is renowned for its Gothic altarpieces, wood carvings, and other medieval artworks; the Budapest History Museum tells the story of the city and preserves restored medieval palace halls and chapels; the Széchényi National Library houses rare ancient books, including the former royal collection of King Matthias. After the visit, take a stroll on the Danube-facing viewing terrace, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Chain Bridge, the Parliament Building, and the scenery along both banks of the Danube—especially enchanting at dusk when the lights come on. To ascend the hill, you can either walk up through the old town of Castle Hill or take the cable car from the end of the Chain Bridge for a leisurely ride up.Budapest · 39.3km from Esztergom

Visegrád Castle - Citadel

Visegrad was the first building of a hill palace on the banks of the Danube, built by the rulers of the Anjou Dynasty after their victory in the battle for the throne. That said, most of this Gothic complex was built by Nagy Lajos I in 1370. The castle was destroyed during the Turkish rule, used as a quarry in the 18th century, and was later buried by the water and soil that fell from the mountain, so that for a long time it was only known from historical written records that it once existed. The excavation began in 1934. The first unearthed was the courtyard of the palace. In the courtyard were the remnants of the Well of Hercules in the Renaissance style customized by King Matthias according to the Italian model. Emblem of the sponsors. Interestingly, the architectural style of the palace has a dual nature: the palace is mainly Gothic, but the various decorations about the Matthias kings reflect the Renaissance style of Italian court artists. The upper castle was built in the mid-13th century to defend against the invasion of the Tatars, and around the same time the lower castle, known as the Minaret of Cholomon, was built. From the ruins of the Royal Palace on the Castle Hill, you can overlook the Danube Bay, which is picturesque. From here, you can also see the peaks of Bergeny on the other side of the Danube and the medieval-style houses in the city of Nagy Mauros.Visegrad · 17.7km from Esztergom

Remember to arrive 20 minutes earlier before the ticket time. The place to take this legenda danube boat is at dock 7, which is behind the bridge, quite a long way to go. Spare some time for walking. It is quite windy at the upper observation deck, remember to keep urself warm. Overall it is a smooth experience, good drink is served, got many languages to choose for the audio guide. We enjoy our 1 hour boat trip ☺️

#St. Stephen's Basilica | A Sacred Place You Can't Miss in Budapest ⛪️ The most moving stop on any trip to Budapest is St. Stephen's Basilica. This basilica, which took 54 years to complete, boasts a 96-meter-high dome, the same height as the Parliament Building, symbolizing the balance between faith and secular life. Stepping into the basilica, you're greeted by gilded murals and exquisite marble sculptures. Sunlight streams gently through the stained-glass windows, creating a serene and solemn atmosphere. The basilica houses Hungary's national treasure—the Holy Right Hand of St. Stephen, the founding king, a relic spanning a millennium, silently narrating the origins and history of the nation. Be sure to buy a ticket to ascend the dome observation deck for a 360° panoramic view of the entire city. The Danube River meanders through the landscape, and the Chain Bridge, the Parliament Building, and the sea of red rooftops are all within sight. Climbing to the top at sunset, with the entire city bathed in the glow of the setting sun, is a uniquely romantic experience in Budapest. The spacious square in front of the basilica is very pleasant; after a long day of exploring, you can sit at a street-side café and quietly admire this magnificent building. If you're lucky, you can also attend a world-class organ concert and immerse yourself in the city's unique artistic charm. When you come to Budapest, don't just rush through; step inside St. Stephen's Basilica and understand the city's faith and gentleness. #HungaryTravel #BudapestCheckIn
