I think this is a very worthwhile part of Kota Kinabalu; the fireflies are beautiful, and the tour guide is excellent. Aside from the slightly bumpy ride on the main road, there are no other downsides.★

Kota Kinabalu Kawa-Kawa River Cruise: Proboscis Monkey and Firefly Tour (Including Afternoon Tea and Dinner)
The trip went very smoothly! Pick-up and drop-off were punctual, and the itinerary was well-organized. Afternoon tea and dinner were delicious, especially the local specialties, which left a lasting impression.
The most unforgettable experience was seeing the proboscis monkeys on the riverbank; they were lively, fun, and incredibly cute. The fireflies at night were breathtaking—the entire forest seemed to be lit up by stars, a dreamlike and magical experience!
The guide was also very professional and friendly, providing engaging explanations and patiently answering our questions. Overall, it was a journey full of surprises, and I highly recommend it! It will definitely be an unforgettable memory.

Everything on this tour went smoothly! The transfer was punctual, and the itinerary was well-organized. The hi-tea and dinner provided were delicious, especially the local flavors which left a deep impression.
The highlight was definitely seeing the proboscis monkeys along the river—they were active, playful, and adorable. And the fireflies at night were absolutely breathtaking! The trees glittered like starlight, creating a magical and enchanting atmosphere.
Our guide was also excellent—knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to answer our questions. Overall, this was a wonderful experience filled with beautiful moments. Highly recommended for an unforgettable adventure!★

Very enjoyable experience despite the bad weather and traffic conditions experienced en-route to Bongowan. We did see a few monkeys, though it was difficult in the rain. However the rain stopped, and we went out again to see the fireflies. The chocolate factory tour was excellent. So were our guides, Simon and John★

It was very far from city so better to join the tour bus if you want to see Mt. Kinabal. where is big and mostly covered with clouds. We were lucky that we could see the top of mountain in a while.★

I bought the Mangrove Island + Mangrove Forest package; you absolutely must buy the package, otherwise going to the mangrove forest alone is too much of a hassle, requiring a 1.5-hour drive each way. The overall itinerary was well-organized, with door-to-door pick-up and drop-off.
Mangrove Island is beautiful and worth a visit.
I didn't see any proboscis monkeys at the mangrove forest, but there were many fireflies, and the guide was engaging, making for a pleasant experience.★

Really satisfied with the trip. Our tour guide, Thompson is very friendly and informative. We manage to see the proboscis monkey. The fire fly trip also amazing. There is a lot of fire fly on the tree and flying around us on the boat.
