On July 19, 2026, I took a day trip. I had booked a large bus tour, but due to insufficient participants, I was upgraded to a smaller car tour for free, and luckily, I even got to sit in the front passenger seat. There were nine people in the group, half of whom were foreigners. Our driver and guide, Mimi, was a young woman from Beijing. She was fluent in both Japanese and English, very knowledgeable, and a skilled driver. She also cleverly avoided peak-hour parking queues (it was a three-day weekend in Japan, so there were many cars). The experience was excellent. The weather was also nice, mostly cloudy, with rain only at the end of our visit to Shikisai-gaoka. Although the lavender in Furano was almost finished blooming, and other flowers weren't in full bloom, on a sunny summer day, Biei felt like a scene from a manga.

Taking public transportation from Sapporo to Cape Kamui was a bit crazy—it was too early, and the transfers were all very time-consuming. After a week of crazy sightseeing, I decided to give myself a break and join a tour. We chose a sunny day, and our tour guide was very gentle, explaining things in both Chinese and English. The Chinese explanations were indeed very detailed, while the English ones were a bit brief. However, most of the other tourists seemed to be Chinese, and I guessed that Hong Kong people could understand Mandarin, so it shouldn't be a problem. Cape Kamui was very windy; I brought color charts to compare and identified more than ten shades of blue—it was incredibly beautiful. In terms of transportation costs alone, going on your own or with a tour is about the same. The tour allows you to visit an extra distillery, which is quite interesting. I personally enjoyed reading the historical records in the museum. I also watched a video on Bilibili reviewing the story of Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky, which was quite informative. You could also visit an orchard, but July is no longer strawberry season, and my child doesn't like strawberries. Those who like fruit picking should check the season beforehand. We changed our minds on the bus after checking the orchard's website, which was a bit embarrassing. We dropped out of the tour after arriving in Otaru in the afternoon because our plan was to go up Tengu Mountain that evening. The tour provided much more time, and we had a great time. Personally, I think it was great value for money. The sea urchins at Cape Kamui were especially delicious. The little building was like a public canteen, but the sea urchins were incredibly fresh. Fresh ingredients really don't need any special cooking skills.

It was pretty good. The tour guide was very responsible, explaining things to tourists from different cultural backgrounds in Chinese, Japanese, and English. He proactively took photos for us at the attractions and we visited all the places he recommended. There was no shopping during the trip, which was great! We visited the Blue Pond, Shirahige Falls, and Asahiyama Zoo. The Blue Pond's colors are beautiful and it's worth a visit! Early May is cherry blossom season 🌸 The cherry blossoms at Asahiyama Zoo are beautiful, and you can often see beautiful cherry blossoms along the roadside.

Highly recommended! I specifically chose this day tour to avoid the rushed, low-priced tours. It only visits three or four spots in one day, including the Blue Pond, Shirahige Falls, and the Forest Elf Terrace, making for a relaxed itinerary. The tour is conducted entirely in Chinese, English, and Korean. The tour guide was sincere and enthusiastic, always smiling, and her local food tips were incredibly useful. She even recommended the lavender ice cream – it was absolutely delicious! The Blue Pond and Shirahige Falls are breathtakingly beautiful, and the detailed explanations throughout made for a fantastic experience. A must-do in Biei!
