Tuo Luo Keng was one of the highlights of my Fujian trip. The view from above — the famous “Four Dishes and One Soup” — was breathtaking, and walking inside the tulou gave me a glimpse of real Hakka life: wooden balconies, families drying produce, and tea stalls. What made the trip extra special was our guide, Kathy. She explained the history in clear English, made everything easy to understand, and even brought us to a local pearl store. Unlike touristy shops, this place felt authentic with fair prices and friendly sellers. It turned the visit into more than sightseeing — it felt like a cultural exchange. 💡 Tip: Ask for Kathy if you want an English-speaking guide who goes beyond the usual tour. She made our day smooth, fun, and memorable.

This trip was extremely satisfying! After booking through Ctrip, the online customer service followed up promptly. The night before departure, both customer service and the driver called to confirm and arrange a time, and they arrived on time to pick us up the next morning. The driver, Mr. Lin, was very enthusiastic and drove smoothly. He's also a local Hakka and was a craftsman who built Tulou (earthen buildings) in his youth, so he spoke about them with great familiarity. From him, I learned that building Tulou requires using raw soil from below one meter of ground level, and that bamboo and timber harvested in the seventh and eighth lunar months are the strongest. Our local guide, Ms. Jiang, was also a local, and her explanations of the Tulou were incredibly detailed, as if she were introducing her homeland. This trip included visits to six Tulou in Yongding and Nanjing. Compared to the others, the Yongding Tulou were larger, more ingeniously structured, and less crowded. The "Yunshuiyao" scenic area in Nanjing was overly commercialized and a bit noisy.
