Guizhou Provincial Museum

7
4.5/5
478 reviews
The Guizhou Provincial Museum is a comprehensive museum showcasing the history and ethnic culture of Guizhou. The new building, completed and opened in 2017, is a brown rhombus-shaped structure adorned with colorful accents on its exterior, symbolizing "though small as a rhombus stone, it embodies the thousand mountains and islands of Guizhou's culture." The museum features three permanent exhibitions: "Ethnic Guizhou," "Kingdom of Paleontology," and "Historical Guizhou," along with functional areas such as a digital experience hall, intangible cultural heritage theater, and 4D cinema. "Historical Guizhou" unfolds along themes such as the exploration of Guanyin Cave, the traces of Yelang, and the path to provincial establishment: the large number of chipped stone tools unearthed at the Qianxi Guanyin Cave site push back the history of human activity in Guizhou to the early Paleolithic era. The restored scene of "head-covered burials" in Hezhang Kele, the early-known Shizhaishan-type bronze drum of Guizhou, and the weapon molds excavated from the Puan Bronze Drum Mountain site together outline the mysterious bronze culture of Yelang. The Eastern Han bronze chariot and horse unearthed from the Wantu Han tomb in Xingyi is widely recognized as the museum's crown jewel, with the bronze horse raising its head in a neigh and the chariot canopy's bronze as thin as paper. The Ming Dynasty golden phoenix crown excavated from the Yang family chieftain's tomb in Zunyi is inlaid with hundreds of rubies and sapphires, while the sets of glazed pottery figurines in ceremonial procession are equally striking. The "Kingdom of Paleontology" takes visitors back to the oceans of hundreds of millions of years ago in Guizhou: The Guizhouosaurus hui measures only 20-30 cm in length, discovered in Xingyi in 1957, and was the first marine reptile found and named by Chinese scholars. The ichthyosaur and crinoid fossils of the Guanling biota, as well as the Orientognathus from the Panxian biota with its neck accounting for nearly half its body length, are all worth a closer look. "Ethnic Guizhou" highlights the museum's collection: the first floor recreates village scenes with stilt houses and covered bridges, while the second floor showcases ethnic costumes such as Miao ceremonial attire, silver horn headdresses, and Shui horse-tail embroidery baby carriers, with the Miao clothing and silver adornments ranking among the finest in China. The rare Song Dynasty egret-patterned wax-dyed women's outfit unearthed in Pingba and the century-old Qing Dynasty dragon boat collected from the banks of the Qingshui River each carry their own stories. Each of the three exhibitions offers a distinct focus, and a full tour takes you from Guizhou's ancient oceanic past to its present-day multi-ethnic culture, so ample time is recommended for a thorough visit.Guiyang · 1.2km from downtown

Huaxi Park

5.5
4.7/5
1.2k reviews
Huaxi Park is located in Huaxi District, south of Guiyang. Built along the Huaxi River, it is a landscape park that evolved from a private garden in the Qing Dynasty. Its predecessor was a garden built by the local Zhou family on the banks of the Huaxi River during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. It was officially opened in 1940 and named Huaxi Park after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The park still maintains its natural layout of "four mountains flanking one river": four small karst hills—Linshan, Guishan, Sheshan, and Fengshan—stand scattered around, while the Huaxi River winds through the park. The mountains are not high but elegant, and the water is not deep but clear, creating a naturally harmonious landscape. A popular attraction in the park is the Baibu Bridge lying across the Huaxi River: dozens of stone steps are lined up, with the stream water flowing over the stone surface all year round. Visitors step on the stones to cross the river, with the water murmuring beneath their feet—this is the classic scene of this park. Under the simple Bashang Bridge, the river water falls into layers of fine waterfalls, and the sound of water is constant. Climbing Linshan, the main peak in the park, the Yitian Pavilion and Feiyun Pavilion at the top are viewpoints for overlooking the entire park. The stone steps along the way are shaded by greenery, and there are cliff carvings and ancient steles in the mountains. The cultural traces are also worth a close look: the East House, known as Qiyuan, is a building constructed in 1941. The writer Ba Jin and Xiao Shan held their wedding here, and it is now the Ba Jin Memorial Hall. Furongzhou, Zhulianchi, and flower gardens such as the Peony Garden, Osmanthus Garden, and Pine and Cypress Garden offer something to see in every season: enjoy peonies in spring, lotus flowers in summer, and the scent of osmanthus in the fall. The pace of your visit can be very casual: strolling along the river or taking a boat ride through the green mountains and clear waters is quite pleasant. The Golden Avenue adjacent to the park is lined with plane trees. In late fall, the yellow leaves cover the road, which is a famous scene in Guiyang in the fall, and many visitors specifically save this season for Huaxi. Small bridges and stone-step paths crisscross the park; walking is much more leisurely than cycling. Slowing down your pace allows you to better savor the relaxed atmosphere of this old park.Guiyang · 24.3km from downtown
Wenchang Pavilion

Wenchang Pavilion

4.5/5

Wenchang Pavilion is located in the old east gate site in Guiyang city. It is a three-story pagoda-shaped building. Because the corners of the cabinet buildings are all even-numbered equal angles, the Wenchang Pavilion with nine corners has become a unique and ancient building that is as famous as the Jiaxiu Building. Wenchang Pavilion is located on the wide and tall East Gate Yuecheng. The building is simple and majestic. There are side halls on both sides of the attic. The front is the fasting room connecting the side halls. There are 9 corrugated woods on the second and third floors of the pavilion, 9 corners on the roof, 54 columns and 81 beams, all of which are multiples of 9. In ancient times, "9" usually represented high power and high rank. The ingenuity is evident. Although Wenchang Pavilion is no longer a Taoist place, but a teahouse for locals, this classic and special ancient building is still worth visiting for tourists who like history and architecture.Guiyang · 11.7km from downtown

Huaguoyuan Wetland Park

5.3
4.5/5
315 reviews
Huaguoyuan Wetland Park is located in the Huaguoyuan area of downtown Guiyang. It is a rare open green space in this massive, high-rise-dense community, surrounded by several mountains. Spanning over 100,000 square meters, it features wetland waters, lakeside boardwalks, and areas for bird and fish watching. The park is planted with trees such as ginkgo and podocarpus, with flowers and plants dotting the landscape throughout the seasons. Black swans, mandarin ducks, and other waterfowl, along with schools of koi, inhabit the lake, and you can often encounter them up close while walking along the boardwalks. The signature view here extends beyond the park itself: on the hillside behind it, the white, European-style Huaguoyuan Art Center stands against the mountain. It reflects on the lake along with the nearby Huaguoyuan Twin Towers, creating a representative urban scene in Guiyang. After nightfall, the lights come on, and the musical fountain on the lake often dances to the music and lights. The wooden boardwalk around the lake and the waterfront plaza are both great spots for viewing the night scenery. When the roses bloom in spring, the cascading flower walls are also a popular photo spot.Guiyang · 10.7km from downtown

Located at No. 187 Zaoshan Road, Yunyan District, Guiyang City, only 1.5 kilometers from the city center, the park was established in 1957 and is a national 4A-level scenic spot. Admission is free (reservations required), Hongfu Temple incense and flower tickets cost 2 yuan, and cable car/zoo services are charged separately. It integrates mountains, forests, springs, lakes, caves, temples, and monkeys, and is known for its "premium location in the city, beautiful in nature." 🌟Highlights & Must-Visit Spots 1. Wild Macaque Troops: A rare semi-wild urban macaque troop (over a thousand individuals) concentrated around the Jiuqu Path and Hongfu Temple. Great for photos, but please do not feed them and keep an eye on your belongings. 2. Hongfu Temple + Jiuqu Path: Guizhou's first temple (during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty). Climb the 383 stone steps of the Jiuqu Path, accompanied by cliff carvings and ancient pavilions; the temple features ancient Buddha caves and Buddhist scriptures, and is a popular place of worship. 3. Qilin Cave: A karst cave where Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng were once under house arrest; it combines natural scenery with revolutionary history. 4. Qianling Lake + Kanzhu Pavilion: The lake is wide enough for boating; Kanzhu Pavilion on Daluo Ridge offers panoramic views of Guiyang city, with stunning sunsets. Visitors can hike or take a cable car up the mountain. 5. Zoo/Panda House: A long-established city zoo with a South China tiger breeding base, suitable for family-friendly educational activities; high vegetation coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions.

This is my second time bringing my kids here. As they are happy, I am happy too. During the rafting process, I found that the safety measures here are sufficient. My two kids floated ahead of me and I arrived safely at the destination.

I arrived 5 minutes early, and the lecturer, Keju, immediately started and continued until 3:05 PM without a break. He covered everything from ancient Guizhou to Qing Dynasty Guizhou, and the lecture was quite comprehensive. It seemed that Keju really enjoys reading and has a rich knowledge base. He was also quite experienced in interacting with children, and the kids listened with great interest. It was very good.

The gentle drizzle awakens memories of autumn's coolness in my hometown. I arrived full of anticipation, and left with a heart full of longing. This city, nestled in the folds of the mountains, healed a period of time with its coolness and vibrant life. Goodbye, my land of refreshing potatoes! The green mountains and evening breeze are packed away; may you cherish the 23°C summer in your heart. [Smug][Smug][Smug][Heart][Heart][Heart]

The buildings are very distinctive, and there are a lot of snacks, which are very satisfying. There are also performances, which are quite interesting. I feel like I have visited all of Guizhou in one trip here, which is really good! I recommend everyone to come and have fun!

Covering 5,000 mu (approximately 1,000 acres), it's six times the size of Huaxi Park and is ideal for hiking, boating, picnics, and wilderness survival training. The area around Nanzhumen, with its large mountains and dense forests, needs to improve bridge guardrail repairs and establish a leisure station.
