Giethoorn

Giethoorn

4.9/5
215 reviews
Giethoorn is a water village where canals replace roads. Because of its crisscrossing waterways and lush greenery, it is known as the "Venice of the North." The village's name comes from the large number of goat horns unearthed by early residents while digging for peat; "Geytenhoren" in Dutch means "goat horn," which was later simplified to Giethoorn. The lake district where the village is located is itself a mark left by centuries of peat extraction, with the excavated trenches gradually developing into today's canal network. A major scenic view in the village is the thatched-roof farmhouses built along the river—the roofs are covered with reeds, complemented by wooden exterior walls and meticulously maintained gardens, scattered along both banks of the canal and connected by numerous small wooden bridges. Boating along the canals is the core way to experience the village; traveling through the tranquil waterways by small boat allows you to enjoy the view of the thatched-roof houses and pastoral scenery from the water. In addition to the waterways, you can also cycle along the forest paths to experience the village's pastoral atmosphere from another perspective.Giethoorn · 46.2km from Haarle

The corridor is composed of arched brick walls and large floor-to-ceiling windows. You can enjoy the panoramic view of the atrium hall. The library on the same floor as the corridor is not to be missed. The history of the library can be traced back to the 19th century. The spiral staircase is very unique and is also known as one of the ten libraries with beautiful scenery in the world.Netherlands · Amsterdam

Anne Frank House is the hiding place where Anne Frank and seven others hid from Nazi persecution during World War II. Anne spent over two years in hiding here and wrote the now-famous The Diary of a Young Girl. The building consists of a main house facing the canal and an annex at the rear: the main house was once the office of the spice company run by Anne's father, Otto Frank, and today, the office and warehouse have been restored to their wartime appearance; the annex is the famous "Secret Annex," with its entrance hidden behind a movable bookcase, and the eight people in hiding lived in the upper rooms of the annex. After the Frank family was arrested, the furniture and personal belongings in the Secret Annex were cleared out by the Nazi authorities. The museum features a diary exhibition displaying the original red-checkered diary Anne received for her 13th birthday, as well as her later notebooks, books of favorite quotes, and short story manuscripts.Netherlands · Amsterdam

Giethoorn truly resembles a fairytale town, with more waterways than roads, and small boats moored in front of every house. Low houses with reed-roofed roofs line the waterways, their gardens meticulously manicured. Renting a boat and rowing yourself is the most relaxing way to experience it, slowly gliding under small bridges, with meadows and wild ducks on either side. The main street is somewhat commercialized, but turning into the side streets brings tranquility, with only the sound of oars paddling through the water. It's best to visit on a sunny day; the slippery roads can be quite inconvenient on rainy days.

At the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands, I was on the scene in Rembrandt's prime time, witnessed the open restoration of "The Night Watch," encountered Vermeer, and came across exquisite Delftware. I was deeply moved by the art of the Dutch Golden Age.

The Cologne Cathedral is a jaw-dropping masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The moment you step out of the central train station, its colossal twin spires tower over you-the sheer scale of it is completely overwhelming and beautiful.Inside, the experience is just as incredible. The massive vaulted ceilings, the stunning, intricate stained-glass windows, and the historic Shrine of the Three Kings are unforgettable. For an extra adventure, you can climb the hundreds of steps up the South Tower for a spectacular panoramic view of Cologne and the Rhine River. It is an absolute must-visit landmark that easily deserves a perfect rating!
