CA-1 is a highly iconic coastal self-drive route on the West Coast of the United States, stretching over 1,000 km along the Pacific coastline and connecting coastal towns from the San Francisco Bay Area, Monterey, Big Sur, San Simeon, and Morro Bay all the way to Los Angeles. Its highlight is concentrated in the Big Sur section between Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and San Simeon: the road winds along steep cliffs, with the surging Pacific Ocean on one side and mountains and redwood forests on the other. There are many scenic parking areas along the way where you can pull over at any time to enjoy the sea breeze and watch the waves crash against the cliffs. There are several highly recognizable scenes along this section: the Bixby Bridge, which spans the canyon, is an elegantly designed concrete arch bridge, and there are almost always vehicles parked at the bridgehead for photos; McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park drops directly from the cliff top onto the beach in the cove, making it a rare beach waterfall in California; the sand at Pfeiffer Beach has a faint purple hue due to the weathering of manganese garnet in the cliffs; further south in the San Simeon area, groups of northern elephant seals can be seen sunbathing on the beach year-round, and you can also visit Hearst Castle on the mountain nearby. The Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey at the northern end and the town of Carmel-By-The-Sea also have their own unique charm.Monterey County · 98.4km from Half Moon Bay

From 1915 to 1917, William Bowers Bourn II and his wife, the owners of the "Empire Gold Mine", built Philoli Manor. It is a masterpiece designed by the talented American architect Willis Polk, which combines the English country garden with the native California landscape. Known as one of the "Top Ten Beautiful Gardens in North America", it covers an area of nearly 265 hectares and is a park with beautiful natural scenery. There is a Georgian Revival-style mansion in the garden, as well as multiple English Renaissance-style gardens with more than 150 different varieties of roses, an orchard covering an area of 2.8 hectares, and a 1.6-kilometer-long path. Many design elements in the manor were also influenced by Chinese gardens. For example, there is a winding artificial stream in the garden, which is similar to the streams in Chinese gardens; many traditional Chinese flowers and plants are also planted in the garden, such as peonies, bamboos, etc. Peony symbolizes wealth and good luck; bamboo is a symbol of perseverance.San Mateo County · 10.4km from Half Moon Bay

Alcatraz Island stands isolated in San Francisco Bay, facing Fisherman's Wharf across the water. To reach the island, visitors must take a ferry from nearby Pier 33. In 1775, Spanish explorers mapping the bay named it "Isla de los Alcatraces" (Island of the Pelicans) due to the abundance of seabirds. However, this small island later became world-famous for its "devilish" reputation: from 1850, it first served as a military fortress guarding the bay entrance, then became a military prison. From 1934 to 1963, it operated as a high-security federal penitentiary housing over a thousand inmates including Al Capone. No escape attempts were ever confirmed successful. The island served as a filming location for "The Rock," and its English name inspired "Azkaban" in Harry Potter. From 1969 to 1971, a 19-month Native American occupation made it an important landmark in the American civil rights movement. Now the entire island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, where abandoned prison cells, old lighthouses, and weathered barracks still retain their original layout. The prison cells along the main corridor, "Broadway," are open to visitors, with permanent exhibitions recounting the island's past. Put on headphones, and the audio guide plays firsthand accounts from former guards and inmates. Between the cliffs and shrubs, seabirds like western gulls, cormorants, and black-crowned night herons nest and thrive. The blend of profound history and bay wildlife makes it one of San Francisco's most distinctive destinations.San Francisco · 40.4km from Half Moon Bay

Twin Peaksis located near downtown San Francisco, United States. This peak not only boasts a unique natural environment but also serves as a key vantage point for overlooking the San Francisco cityscape. Facing northeast, it offers expansive views, allowing you to take in the rolling skyline of downtown San Francisco, the winding city blocks, and the vast bay scenery. Continue along the ridge trail toward the summit for an even more expansive viewing experience. Upon reaching the summit, the view almost encircles the entire city. To the east, you can see the layered residential blocks of the Mission District, while in the distance lies the vast coastline toward the Pacific Ocean. In the early morning, as sunlight gradually illuminates the city, you can feel the quiet, fresh air at the summit. In the evening, as the sun slowly sets over the Pacific, the sky and sea are painted in soft colors, creating a magnificent natural scene.San Francisco · 32.2km from Half Moon Bay

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate Strait, opened to traffic in 1937 with a total length of approx. 2.7 km. It has long been regarded as a symbol of San Francisco. The Golden Gate Strait connects San Francisco Bay on one end and leads to the Pacific Ocean on the other, with the bridge spanning the strait and linking downtown San Francisco to the towns of the North Bay. The bridge's iconic international orange paint stands out strikingly. Despite San Francisco's frequent fog, even when sea mist rolls in, this vibrant orange remains clearly visible. Scenes like the intense battle between apes on the bridge in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and Magneto moving the entire bridge in "X-Men" have made it a familiar sight for movie fans. The location is crucial for both viewing and photographing the bridge. Fort Point on the southern side of the bridge is right beneath it, offering a chance to look up at the massive steel structure. Battery Spencer, a lookout on the western side of the northern shore, is a popular spot for capturing the bridge's full span, with the orange-red bridge, the sea, and the distant city skyline all in one frame—especially atmospheric when fog rolls in. The Vista Point observation deck near Sausalito is ideal for watching the traffic flow across the bridge. Generally, the northern shore provides expansive views and complete compositions, while the southern side offers lower angles better suited for close-up shots of the water and bridge sections. If time allows, consider renting a bike for cycling across the bridge—an experience unmatched by walking or driving, as you glide between the steel beams and ocean breeze.San Francisco · 39.9km from Half Moon Bay

Palace of Fine Artsis located in the Marina District in the northern part of San Francisco, United States, and is a well-preserved historic building that attracts many visitors. The building was designed by American architect Bernard Maybeck, who drew inspiration from ancient Roman and Greek architecture, shaping the palace into an ancient ruin that seems to have weathered the passage of time. The towering dome, solemn colonnades, and a design style with a touch of imperfection give the entire structure a tranquil and poetic sense of age beyond its grandeur. Approaching the building, you can see the towering dome and elegant curved colonnades surrounding the lake, which, together with the surrounding open water, form a tranquil, scenic view. This palace is not just a historic building, but a public space that blends architectural aesthetics, natural scenery, and cultural memory.San Francisco · 37.8km from Half Moon Bay

Driving along California's Highway 1, my hands were aching from gripping the wheel for so long. The coastal section was winding and twisting, with waves crashing white against the cliffs below. I stopped by the roadside to watch the seals; those lazy guys just rolled on their backs, not moving an inch. The Big Sur Bridge was quite photogenic, but I was too busy watching the road to cross it. We kept stopping and starting, turning into every viewpoint we saw to enjoy the breeze. Just as the gas tank was almost empty, we arrived in town; a burger and a Coke were the perfect comfort food.

Filoli Garden House was absolutely a bang for a buck! It was so stunning with various kinds of flower during peak blooming season of springtime. Historic House was amazing as well with ethereal interior design, especially the gorgeous arts of floral arrangement in different vases.

Came here on September 25, 2017. There are many public beaches along Highway 1, and the Half Moon Bay area is probably the best. This is a long beach, stretching for 7 or 8 kilometers; the beach is flat and the sand is small, so the sand surface here is wide and flat. Coupled with the beautiful curve of Half Moon Bay, the whole beach is very photogenic. The only drawback is that there are few recreational facilities here, and naturally there are not many tourists. Therefore, this place is more suitable for strolling, daydreaming and sunbathing, and it is also good to take pictures of the scenery.

Really enjoyed visiting Alcatraz Island! The ferry ride over had great views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. The self-guided cellhouse tour was very interesting, especially hearing the stories about the prison and its former inmates. The whole experience was well organized and definitely worth visiting if you’re in San Francisco. Highly recommended!

The Twin Towers are Xiamen's landmark buildings, facing the Gulangyu Island Scenic Area. Nearby are all luxury houses, which belong to the rich and the noble. It is so comfortable to sit on the Twin Towers, drink afternoon tea and enjoy the autumn sunshine.
