Chaoyang Tower, also known as Yinghui Gate, is located at the east end of Jianzhong Road in the center of Jianshui County. It is a landmark building of Jianshui Ancient City. During the Yuanhe period of the Tang Dynasty, the Nanzhao regime built an earthen city here. In the 20th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1387), Lin'an Guard was established and the original earthen city was expanded into a brick city. In the 22nd year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1389), Chaoyang Tower was built, which was the east gate tower of Jianshui City at that time. In the early years of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, Li Dingguo captured Lin'an City. The three towers of the South Gate, West Gate and North Gate were destroyed in the war. They were repaired in the fourth year of Kangxi, but were damaged again. Now they have collapsed and disappeared. Only Chaoyang Tower at the East Gate, despite many wars and earthquakes, still stands as before, becoming a symbol of the important town in southern Yunnan. Chaoyang Tower is three stories high and has a three-eaved hip roof structure. Standing on the top of the building, you can overlook the people of Lin'an Road from the window. Chaoyang Tower and the half-moon square next to it are leisure places for local people. The morning sun rising up the city wall and the Chaoyang Tower shining brightly at night are favorite scenes for photography enthusiasts.Jianshui · 2.1km from downtown

The Academic Examination Hall is located in the middle section of Jianzhong Road in Jianshui County, Yunnan Province. The old site in the Ming Dynasty was in the southeast corner of the city. It was moved to its current location in the 30th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1693). It was the examination room where the academic supervisor of Yunnan Province held regular academy examinations. Candidates came from four prefectures: Lin'an, Yuanjiang, Kaihua (now Wenshan Prefecture), and Pu'er (now Simao City). Only qualified ones could go to the provincial capital to take part in the provincial examinations. The examination hall is 150 square meters in depth and more than 40 meters in width, covering an area of more than 6,000 square meters. The houses are lined up in a strict symmetrical pattern with the corridor as the central axis, forming a four-courtyard layout, which is solemn and gives people a sense of striving forward. The latter courtyard is the Academic Affairs Office. It was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Yunnan Province in 1993. The academy examination in the Jianshui Academic Examination Hall is a preparatory examination before the imperial examination. Those who are admitted to the academy examination can receive preferential treatment and enter the national imperial examination process. After that, those who pass the provincial examination and become a juren, and pass the joint examination and palace examination can be appointed as officials to realize the dream of "being a farmer in the morning and serving as an emperor in the evening". The Jianshui Xuezheng Examination Shed, which has been restored to its original appearance, is decorated with relevant content of the ancient imperial examination, and has launched real-life activities such as "Lin'an Examination" and "Hairpin Flower Ceremony", which allow you to review history and appreciate the profound history and culture of Jianshui.Jianshui · 2.3km from downtown

Taking a ride on the meter-gauge railway in Jianshui Ancient City is a wonderful and worthwhile experience. I booked my ticket online a day in advance and boarded at Lin'an Station at 9:00 AM. The train clattered along the tracks slowly, with a gentle breeze on my face – a truly delightful moment!

It was breathtaking; there were so many rooms and courtyards, and the private gardens were like parks today. What impressed me most were the doors and windows, especially the doors, each with its own unique carvings.

Jianshui Ancient City | A Thousand-Year-Old Lin'an, Hiding Yunnan's Gentlest Slow Time ✨ Having traveled through many ancient cities in Yunnan, I have a particular fondness for Jianshui. Unlike the bustling crowds of Dali and Lijiang, this ancient city of Lin'an, with its thousand-year history, is a truly living ancient city. There's no excessive commercialization or dense clusters of trendy shops; only the rich cultural heritage and the everyday life brimming with life, hiding the leisurely pace of southern Yunnan's life within the ancient alleyways and blue-brick walls passed down through the years. The moment you step into the ancient city, all the anxieties of your journey are soothed. The winding bluestone paths, polished by centuries of wind and rain, are both warm and rustic. Along the streets are well-arranged Ming and Qing dynasty houses and elegant stone archways, their upturned eaves embodying Chinese aesthetics, their mottled walls etched with the marks of time. Deep within the alleys, locals still live and work for generations, with wisps of smoke rising from chimneys in the morning and leisurely conversations in the afternoon—a blend of everyday life and ancient charm, gentle and healing. The spirit of the ancient city is hidden in its cultural heritage passed down through generations. The Chaoyang Tower, standing majestically in the east of the city for six hundred years, bears witness to the vicissitudes of Jianshui over a millennium. Greeting the sunrise and bidding farewell to the sunset, it is the most captivating landmark of the ancient city. The Jianshui Confucian Temple, the largest in China, is tranquil and serene. Ancient cypress trees reach for the sky, and the Pan Pond reflects the surrounding landscape. Its ancient and solemn architecture, with its bracketed eaves and flying corners, exudes a scholarly atmosphere that has continued for a thousand years. A stroll through it is filled with a refined and tranquil ambiance, inspiring awe. Every step reveals a scene of ancient charm, and every brick and tile tells a story. The Zhu Family Garden, hailed as the "Grand View Garden of Southern Yunnan," features winding corridors, secluded courtyards, and exquisitely carved beams and painted rafters. Each courtyard offers a unique view, showcasing the elegant splendor of a once-powerful family. The century-old narrow-gauge railway, winding its way through rice paddies and ancient villages, its whistle whistling softly in the evening breeze, offers an immersive experience of the romance and gentleness of bygone days—a uniquely Jianshui-esque healing romance. What's most captivating is the vibrant, everyday life of the ancient town. Everywhere you look, there are stalls selling grilled tofu, their smoke rising, the crispy exterior and tender interior a testament to Jianshui's ingrained flavor. The fragrant and sweet grass-sprout rice noodles and authentic local barbecue are affordable and delicious, each bite a taste of southern Yunnan. Spend your leisure time sitting by the roadside, watching locals chat and slowly grill tofu, letting time flow by peacefully—a truly serene and enjoyable experience. And here you'll find the unique Jianshui purple pottery, its thousand-year-old kilns burning ever since. Meticulously crafted by artisans, its crackled texture is warm and elegant, embodying the craftsmanship and heritage of southern Yunnan—the ancient town's most precious cultural symbol. By day, admire the ancient architecture and cultural heritage; by night, embrace the vibrant life of the ancient city. By day, Jianshui is like Lin'an, a city steeped in history and culture, with its scholarly atmosphere and gleaming ancient buildings. By night, Jianshui transforms into a gentle, relaxed town, with soft lights, tranquil streets, and the aroma of delicious food carried on the evening breeze, making every journey more pleasant. In Jianshui, there's no need to rush to see everything; simply stroll at your leisure. See the ancient buildings reflected in the moonlight, hear the rumble of the railway tracks, savor the everyday life, and cherish the gentle passage of time. This hidden gem of an ancient city in southern Yunnan tells the story of the most healing slow-paced life in Yunnan through its millennia-old cultural heritage and gentle, vibrant atmosphere. 🌿 (For sightseeing)

Tuanshan Residence, located near Tuanshan Railway Station, is home to the Zhang family. Their ancestral precepts are quite educational. Surrounded by a village gate, it was formerly used to protect their clan. Now, many local residents live there; elderly people play cards and sell goods, while newcomers come to visit. For example, I encountered a vendor from Jianshui selling ceramic tile figurines—quite interesting. Life there is simple and rustic, worth a visit.

There aren't many cultural relics or historical materials available. Besides traditional content, there's a lack of relevant historical and cultural heritage to attract attention. The Confucian Temple honors Confucius, and the core spirit of Confucianism should be displayed there! That would be more appealing.

Photo Spots (Go in order, no turning back) ① Pink Hollowed-Out Maze Castle: A wall entirely of macaron pink bricks; afternoon light filters through the openings, creating a dreamy, dappled effect. ② Pure White Temple: White walls against a blue sky—minimalist elegance is off the charts. ③ Klein Blue Tunnel: Cool tones exude sophistication; the geometric lines are stunning. ④ Cave Cafe: A cave-style cafe hidden in an "anthill," offering a fantastic atmosphere. ⑤ Flame Tower/Source of Life Tower: Climb up for a panoramic view of the entire pink maze. ⑥ Lake Reflection: The pink castle reflected in the water—a symmetrical composition that's simply divine.

It's a worthwhile place to visit; the walk through it was quite impressive. The dry cave section showcased a collection of traditional beliefs. The rock climbing and bird's nest harvesting techniques in the Swallow Cave were truly nerve-wracking. The cave is deep, with constantly changing scenery, but the final climb up the steps is not recommended for elderly people with mobility issues. There's a small restaurant outside the scenic area worth trying.

Chaoyang Tower, with its long history and one story taller than Tiananmen Square, is a must-see attraction in Jianshui! The exhibitions and historical information upstairs are quite interesting; you can learn a lot if you take your time. From Chaoyang Tower, you can enjoy some panoramic views of Jianshui, which is a great perspective! The prices at Chaoyang Tower are reasonable, the service is excellent, and overall, I highly recommend it!

The Jianshui Imperial Examination Hall is a perfect place to bring children! As one of the best-preserved ancient imperial examination halls in China, it offers more than just ancient architecture; it provides an immersive experience of simulating the provincial examinations, making it both educational and fun, and highly beneficial for children. Entering the courtyard, rows of ancient examination rooms are realistically recreated, allowing you to directly see the cramped testing space of candidates in ancient times. The exhibition hall displays artifacts and sample exam papers related to the imperial examinations, explaining the system in an easy-to-understand way. The most interesting part is the provincial examination experience, where you can dress up in ancient costume and go through the entire examination process: receiving your admission ticket, entering the examination hall, answering questions, and even experiencing a simulated announcement of results. Finally, you can receive a congratulatory message – a truly ceremonial experience. Children can personally role-play as ancient scholars, moving beyond dry history from textbooks and genuinely experiencing the hardships of studying and taking the imperial examinations. The courtyard also offers guided tours and interactive activities. A visit takes about 1-1.5 hours, a leisurely pace. Located within the ancient city, it's conveniently situated for visiting other attractions afterward. Highly recommended for families with children. Compared to simply visiting historical sites, this kind of immersive experience is very effective for children's historical education and offers great value for money.
