Dehang Miao Village

Dehang Miao Village is nestled deep in a canyon. "Dehang" means "beautiful canyon" in the Miao language. The Jiulong Creek flows through the village, and over 100 Miao households have built their homes along the creek and against the mountains. They still use the Miao language for daily conversation, and women enjoy wearing silver ornaments and collarless embroidered clothing, making it a vivid example of the Miao village customs in western Hunan. The village is surrounded by rugged mountains and sheer cliffs, with precipices, stone walls, waterfalls, and primitive secondary forests unfolding in layers. The Liusha Waterfall at the end of Jiulong Creek has a drop of over 200 m. The water cascades down from the sheer cliff like a veil brushing against the face, hence the name "Liusha" (meaning "flowing gauze"). Crossing the stone arch bridge in the village, you can climb Pangu Peak. The top of the peak is covered with tangled primitive forests between the large and small peaks, and it is surrounded by cliffs on all sides. Reaching the summit offers a panoramic view of the canyon village. The Three Sisters Peaks on the ridge of the new village are smaller at the top and larger at the bottom, resembling three Miao girls in skirts when viewed from afar. Stilt houses with blue tiles and stone foundations wind along the creek, their upturned eaves and carved lattice windows half-hidden among green trees and cooking smoke. The waterwheels and stone mills by the creek creak as they turn, powered by the water, exuding an idyllic, old-world charm. In the village, you can encounter Miao customs such as singing songs to block the gate and offering toasts to welcome guests, watch a Miao drum dance with resonant beats, or try your hand at making ciba (glutinous rice cakes), weaving Miao brocade, or learning to sing Miao songs. During traditional festivals like the Miao New Year or the Eighth Day of the Fourth Lunar Month, the whole village dresses up in silver ornaments, with singing and dancing continuing endlessly. When visiting, you might want to walk from the Miao village along the Jiulong Creek trail deep into the canyon to find the Liusha Waterfall at the end. The waterfall's scenery changes significantly with the water volume. You can appreciate its grandeur during the wet season and the ethereal "flowing gauze" effect during the dry season, each with its own unique charm.

The Aizhai Bridge scenic area, Dehang Miao Village, and the Grand Canyon are included in a package ticket. The Aizhai Bridge is definitely worth a visit; it's a world wonder. The high-altitude swing and bungee jumping activities inside the bridge are relatively expensive. After visiting the Aizhai Bridge, drive to Dehang Miao Village at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and the Liusha Waterfall within the canyon. The Aizhai Highway is also known as one of China's top ten must-drive highways. A leisurely 20-minute drive will take you to the bottom of the canyon, where there are many farmhouses and restaurants. After lunch, continue a few kilometers to Dehang Miao Village. During the National Day holiday, parking inside the Miao Village is limited; vehicles can be parked in the outdoor parking lot, and a free shuttle bus is available. The scenery of Dehang Miao Village isn't particularly stunning, but it does have the Liusha Waterfall. It's about 4 kilometers from the village entrance. If you don't want to walk, you can take an electric cart for 18 yuan per person. After getting off the cart, walk about 700 meters along the stream to the waterfall. The most distinctive feature of Dehang Miao Village is its drum performance, which is held twice a day, around 7 PM and 3 PM. After visiting the scenic area, you can return to Jishou city or Fenghuang Ancient Town without taking a long route (Aizhai Mountain Road). Just follow the valley floor out of the canyon; it's all flat with no uphill sections. It takes about 40 minutes to get to Jishou city and about 1.5 hours to get to Fenghuang Ancient Town.

At first, the area from the entrance to the fork in the road seemed average. But once you reached the Jade Belt Waterfall, you'd understand why it's a 5A-level scenic spot; it's a pity I didn't climb to the top. The valley to the left is quiet, but the black stone slabs are slippery after rain. The valley to the right has a wide stream where you can catch crabs.

It was raining the whole time, so I first went to Dehang Grand Canyon and then strolled around Dehang Miao Village. There weren't many people that day, and the walk at the foot of the mountain was very peaceful, which I liked. Along the way, there were gentle trails and steep steps, streams, and a jade-belt waterfall. The misty rain of early autumn had a unique charm. The only pity was that the fog was so thick when I climbed to Tianwen Terrace that I couldn't see the view of the layered peaks at the summit. But even so, when I was on Tianwen Terrace, surrounded by fog, I felt like I was in a heavenly palace—I guess I was a god for a moment! 🤣🤣🤣

Dehang, meaning "beautiful canyon" in the Miao language, is nestled amidst mountains. Stilted houses stand along the stream, and winding cobblestone paths meander through the village. Its tranquil atmosphere, free from commercialization, preserves the original charm of a Miao village. At the village gate, guests are welcomed with a welcoming drink. The Miao drum dance at the Drum King Square is magnificent, its silver ornaments jingling, and the songs echoing through the valley. A leisurely stroll through the canyon allows you to enjoy the babbling brook and distant views of the Aizhai Bridge and the Liusha Waterfall. Away from the hustle and bustle, you can experience Miao embroidery and folk performances up close, where nature and culture blend seamlessly. Compared to bustling ancient towns, it offers a more secluded and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for calmly immersing yourself in the unique ethnic customs of western Hunan.

It's worth going here! Today is April 30th. Maybe the weather is too good, or maybe it's just so beautiful. We drove along the most beautiful road in the countryside and sighed at its beauty. It's not an exaggeration to say that this is the Little Guilin in Xiangxi. The blue sky is its background, the mountains are so green, the water is blue (very magical), and the waves are sparkling. It rushes forward all the way. Standing on the bridge, it seems like a painting, which makes people surprised, excited and intoxicated. Such a free attraction is so lucky!

The height reaches 216 meters. If you have no idea, I tell you that this is the highest waterfall in China. You must go there during the flood season. If it is important, just say it once. The momentum is definitely different when you see it. Some people describe it as nine dragons turning over the waves, swallowing clouds and spewing mist, and the sound is like thunder, which is absolutely accurate.

The water flows out from the cave on the mountainside in a fan shape, with a loud sound that can be heard as far as a mile away. If you are lucky enough to see it in the rainy season, the sound is like thunder, the waves are crisscrossed, the water foam is flying into the air, and the momentum is magnificent. It can be called the world's first cave waterfall.

The scenery is beautiful, like in the clouds. There are not many tourists during the National Day holiday, so the experience is good. The service staff of the scenic spot is very thoughtful. There are often aunties cleaning the glass floor of the glass plank road so that tourists can clearly see the mountain below, even when it rains. Anti-slip floor is also laid. The guide is also very patient.
