Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge connects the old town and the small town of Prague. It is a landmark building in Prague, and it is also the oldest stone bridge in the city. It is often said that "you have come to Prague by crossing this bridge". Inscribed on the World Heritage List This is a Gothic stone bridge imitating the Roman Angel Bridge, and it is the only way for the coronation procession of the kings of the past dynasties. In 1992, the Charles Bridge was included in the World Heritage List. When it was first built, its name was "Stone Bridge". It is said that egg yolks are also mixed into the raw mortar for reinforcement. The open-air Baroque Statue Museum Charles Bridge is 516 meters long and has a particularly wide deck. The bridge is known as "Europe's open-air Baroque sculpture gallery". There are various sculptures and reliefs decorated on both sides of the bridge. There are a total of 30 saint sculptures, all of which are masterpieces from Czech masters of the 17th and 18th centuries. It is said that behind each statue there is a touching historical story. Statue of St. John Among the many statues on the Charles Bridge, the statue of St. John is the more famous one and is considered to be the "official" guardian of the Charles Bridge. St. John, a cardinal, offended the king because of the political and religious struggle, and was sentenced to death and thrown into the river. A golden cross is engraved in the middle of the fence, where St. John was thrown from the bridge. Touch the statue and pray for happiness It is said that as long as you touch the statue of Charles Bridge with your heart, you will get a lifetime of happiness. Many bronze reliefs become very bright because too many people touch them. Most of the sculptures on the bridge have now been replaced by replicas, while the originals are kept in Prague's museums. Street artists on the bridge In addition to various statues, the street artists on the bridge are also a unique landscape. There are art painting booths on both sides of the bridge, and many street painters paint on the spot, and most of the themes are taken from the Charles Bridge. In addition, there are some artistic workers who perform with musical instruments, bringing infinite vitality to the Charles Bridge. The bridge tower overlooks the beauty of Prague There are two bridge towers at both ends of the Charles Bridge - the Old Town Bridge Tower and the Small Town Bridge Tower. You can climb the bridge tower and overlook the Charles Bridge and the city of Prague, which is even more beautiful when the sun sets in the evening.Prague · 22.8km from Karlstejn

Old Town Square

No "wishing pool" yet still stunning "I stood in the Old Town Square at dusk in Prague, casting hope into the wishing well..." You must have heard Jolin Tsai's "Prague Square," a song depicting the Old Town Square surrounded by medieval architecture. However, the reality is there is no "wishing well" mentioned in the lyrics, but the fairy-tale atmosphere here is enchanting enough. The Old Town Square was built approx. 900 years ago and is a historically renowned square in Prague, located between Wenceslas Square and Charles Bridge. It is also the heart of the city, bustling with crowds every summer. Public square highlights At the center of the square stands a statue of Jan Hus built in 1915, erected to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of the Charles University rector. The surrounding buildings showcase diverse architectural styles, ranging from Gothic masterpieces like the Church of Our Lady before Týn to Baroque gems such as St. Nicholas Church. A major attraction for visitors is the Prague astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall facade. On the hour, the clock chimes as windows above it open, revealing a procession of 12 apostle figures that bow to the crowd. If interested, you can also climb the tower of the old town hall to overlook the panoramic view of the old town. The roofs in the city are almost all painted red, while the slightly protruding spires of clock towers and churches are green. They are scattered yet orderly throughout the city, and the vivid colors give Prague a fairy-tale charm. Public square activity The old town square is not only a popular tourist destination but also frequently used for new year celebrations, holiday markets (Christmas and Easter) and rally activities. On ordinary days, there are many street performers in the square, and many local youth come here to take wedding photos. The square is surrounded by many cafes. If you're tired from exploring, you can order a coffee at an outdoor cafe, and don't miss the grilled sausages and ice cream. Enjoying the music and dance performances on the square is truly refreshing. The alleys around the square are lined with small shops selling various art goods—if you like them, you can buy some as souvenirs.Prague · 23.4km from Karlstejn

Prague Astronomical Clock

Prague Astronomical Clock

4.6/5
629 reviews
The Prague Astronomical Clock is a medieval astronomical clock installed on the south wall of the Old Town Hall in Prague's Old Town Square. It has not only become a popular tourist attraction, but also a popular location for locals to take wedding photos. Every hour on the hour, the 12 disciples appear one after the other accompanied by the sound of the bell, which is especially worth seeing. Historical background It is said that the craftsman who built this clock was even blinded in order to ensure that no such clock appeared in the world. During World War II, the clock was almost destroyed by Nazi munitions, until 1948, the astronomical clock was restored, and a second restoration was carried out in 1979.  The Exquisite Structure Astronomical Clock is a beautiful and unique self-ringing clock, divided into two upper and lower. The upper clock circles once a year, and the bottom circle circles once a day. The bell body seen is mainly the appearance that has been restored after the war. The core part of the astronomical clock was completed in 1410 and consists of three main parts - the astronomical dial, the Twelve Apostles and the calendar dial. The astronomical dial represents the position of the sun and moon in the sky and can display various astronomical details. The Walking Twelve Apostles is a clockwork that displays the disciples and other moving statues every hour. There is also a calendar dial composed of medallions representing the months. The background of the astronomical clock shows a partial view of the earth and the sky, the blue ring in the middle represents the earth, the blue in the upper part represents the sky above the horizon, and the red and black areas represent the sky below the horizon. During the day, the sun installation is above the blue background, at night it is above the black, and at dawn or dusk the sun installation is active above the red part. The blue ring of the dial marks the time scale with golden Roman numerals, divided according to the usual 24 hours of the day, which is Prague time. Gold curves on the dial divide the blue into 12 parts, marking each time period between the sun rising and setting, and each day of the year, long or short. On the hour between 9:00-21:00 every day, the twelve statues of Jesus' disciples will appear in sequence from the clock, 6 turning left and 6 turning right. The god of death on the side began to ring the bell, and the chicken above also flapped its wings and croaked. This dynamic hourly chime is the focal point of any traveller's Prague trip. In addition, there are four statues on both sides of the astronomical clock. When making clocks, people use it to represent four kinds of people. One statue is called "Pride", which shows the person who admires himself in the mirror; one is a Jew with a bag of gold, which shows a "greedy" usurer; on the other side of the clock stands "Death", is A skeleton, beating the chimes at every o'clock; the latter is a "Turkish heretic" who wears a long turban. In addition to admiring the astronomical clock from the outside, you can also choose to enter the interior of the old city hall and climb the tall clock tower, where you can not only see the internal structure of the astronomical clock at close range, but also overlook the view of Prague Square. Whether it is morning or evening, here will bring you different feelings.Prague · 23.4km from Karlstejn

511 reviews
St. Vitus Cathedralis located in the Third Courtyard of Prague Castle and is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the Czech Republic. It also serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Prague. In the past, Bohemian kings were crowned here, and many members of the royal family were also laid to rest here after their passing. Construction of the cathedral began in the mid-14th century, but it was halted several times due to war and lack of funds, not being completed until the late 1920s. Spanning nearly six centuries, it embodies the painstaking efforts of several generations of architects, including Matthias of Arras, Peter Parler, and their successors. The main entrance of the cathedral faces west. The rose window above the main door features scenes from the Book of Genesis, and when sunlight streams in, it illuminates the entire hall. The bronze reliefs on the doors depict the lives of the Czech patron saints, St. Wenceslaus and St. Adalbert. Stepping inside, ancient stone columns support a network of intersecting Gothic vaults, forming zigzag patterns overhead. Stained glass, wood carvings, and stone sculptures from different eras and styles come together here, resembling a medieval art museum.Prague · 22.7km from Karlstejn

The Vltava River is the mother river of the Czech Republic. It originates from the forests of southwestern Bohemia and joins the city of Mirnik in the north of the capital Prague and the Elbe River. The second symphonic poem in the Czech symphonic poem "My Motherland" is a picturesque scene depicting the river. The beautiful Vltava River divides Prague into two parts, with the Old Town and the New Town on the east bank and the Small Town on the west bank. There are more than a dozen ancient or modern bridges across the river, connecting the urban areas on both sides of the river. Among them, the Charles Bridge, which connects the old town and the small town of Prague, is decorated with various sculptures and reliefs on both sides of the bridge. You can stroll along the Vltava River and enjoy the scenery of the medieval city on both sides. Or take a cruise and see the beauty of Prague from a different angle. There are cruise boats along the river pier in the city center. The boat journey is usually about 1 hour. Along the way, you can overlook the Prague Castle, Rudolph Concert Hall and other iconic sights.Prague · 22.5km from Karlstejn

Dancing House

Dancing HouseOriginally known as the Nationale-Nederlanden building, it is located on the banks of the Vltava in Prague's New Town. Designed by Czech architect Vlado Milunić and Frank Gehry, it was completed in 1996 and is a work of deconstructivist architecture. The building consists of two towers, one rigid and one fluid, embracing each other: the concrete tower is upright and structured, representing the suited male dancer Fred; the glass tower cinches at the waist and flares outward, like the female dancer Ginger with her skirt swirling. The entire structure is thus nicknamed "Fred and Ginger," a tribute to the classic Hollywood screen dance partners. This avant-garde design contrasts sharply with the Baroque, Gothic, and Art Nouveau buildings common in Prague. The design faced much dispute when first announced, but today it has become one of the iconic examples of modern architecture in Prague.Prague · 22.1km from Karlstejn

Charles Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in Prague and a wonderful place to visit. The historic stone bridge is full of beautiful statues and offers amazing views of the Vltava River, Prague Castle, and the city’s old buildings. I enjoyed walking across the bridge, watching local artists, musicians, and street performers, which created a lively atmosphere. The bridge is especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset when the light makes the scenery even more impressive. It is also a great place to take photos and enjoy the city’s history. Overall, Charles Bridge is a must-visit attraction that combines history, culture, and beautiful views, making it one of the highlights of any trip to Prague.

Prague's Old Town Square doesn't have a wishing well, but when the Astronomical Clock strikes the hour, the twelve apostles' figures emerge from the windows, always drawing a large crowd. The spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn are a dark gray, like two flames. Pigeons perch on the Jan Hus statue in the center of the square year-round. Turning into the alleyways, you can buy cinnamon rolls, piping hot and sprinkled with powdered sugar. In the evening, as the lights come on, the sound of horse-drawn carriages crunching on the cobblestones is crisp and clear; sitting in an open-air seat watching people come and go is quite relaxing.

The Vltava River is the "mother river" of the Czech Republic, connecting historic districts on both banks. The Gothic and Baroque buildings along the river are reflected in the water, and boats passing by seem to be walking into a flowing oil painting, making it incredibly romantic.
