Nairobi National Park is only about 7 km south of Nairobi's city center, making it one of the few wildlife reserves in the world adjacent to a national capital. It was designated a national park as early as 1946, more than a decade before Kenya's independence. The park covers over 100 square kilometers, dominated by open savanna with patches of dry woodland and riverine forest. The southern boundary has no fence, allowing herbivores such as wildebeest and zebra to move freely along migration corridors between the park and the plains to the south. This park's signature is the "wildlife experience beneath the city skyline"—while tracking lions, cheetahs, and giraffes in the park, Nairobi's high-rise buildings are clearly visible in the distance, a juxtaposition of wilderness and city that is extremely rare among wildlife reserves worldwide. It is also one of the few national parks in Kenya where black rhinos can be seen in their natural habitat.
