The Cochem Castle that towers over the town of Cochem on the Moselle River today is not the original 12th-century castle. The original castle was destroyed in 1689 by troops led by the King of France. It remained a ruin for the next 180 years, until a wealthy businessman from Berlin decided to buy the ruins and rebuild it in 1868.
