Lake Atitlán

Lake Atitlán is situated in the highlands of the Sierra Madre mountains and is a crater lake formed by water filling the caldera after a massive ancient volcanic eruption. The lake surface is at an altitude of approx. 1,562m, and it reaches a depth of approx. 340m. The lake basin is surrounded by steep cliffs, with Volcan San Pedro, Volcan Tolimán, and Volcan Atitlán standing side by side on the south side. The mountains reflected on the open lake surface are an iconic view here. Multiple villages of Mayan descendants are scattered around the lake, where traditional weaving, dyeing, clothing, and agricultural lifestyles continue to this day, and the volcanic slopes are covered with coffee plantations. Most visitors depart from Panajachel on the lakeshore and take small boats to travel between the villages. You can also boat on the lake for a close-up view of the volcanic reflections, or hike up the "Indian Nose" ridge before dawn to watch the sunrise emerge between the clouds and the lake surface. Energetic travelers can challenge themselves with a hike up Volcan San Pedro and overlook the entire lake basin from the summit.Cerro de Oro · 7.2km from Panajachel

Volcan Acatenango has an elevation of approx. 3,976 m and is the third-highest peak in Guatemala. It is a dormant volcano with no recorded eruptions since the 1970s. It faces the perpetually active Fuego Volcano across a valley and is located near the ancient city of Antigua, making the starting point for the climb relatively accessible. When visiting, it is common to start from the farmland at the foot of the mountain on the first day, passing through cloud forests and alpine vegetation zones, and camping at a high-altitude campsite at approx. 3,700 m on the mountainside in the evening. The campsite faces Fuego Volcano, and at night, you can often see the fire and smoke rising from the crater opposite; before dawn, you make the final push to the summit from the campsite to catch the sunrise. On clear days, you can overlook Volcan de Agua, the ancient city of Antigua, and even see the distant Pacific coast.Quetzaltenango · 40.6km from Panajachel
