No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Allegheny County

US Steel Tower

4.7

4.8/5

22 reviews

The U.S. Steel Building is the tallest building in Pittsburgh and a landmark building here. Made of steel, it is 256 meters high and was built in 1970. The walls of the building are covered with reddish-brown steel plates produced by the U.S. Steel Corporation, which sparkle from a distance. The ground floor of the building retains a giant rivet decorative wall that symbolizes the civilization of the steel industry, and the X-shaped diagonal bracing structure on the facades of some floors is in line with the genes of Pittsburgh as a bridge capital. Although the 64th floor observation deck is not open to the public, visitors can look up at its industrial aesthetic lines at the Golden Triangle Plaza at the foot of the building, or take in the magnificent city view of the confluence of three rivers through the nearby Mount Washington observation deck. As a representative work of American post-war modernist architecture, its angular Gothic outline forms a time-space dialogue with the 19th-century stone buildings on the Allegheny River. When night falls, the translucent amber light and shadow throughout the building become a silent witness to the city's transformation from a steel giant to a technology center.

The Cathedral of Learning is one of Pittsburgh's landmarks, one of the National Register of Historic Places, and the centerpiece of the University of Pittsburgh's main campus in Oakland. This 163-meter-high, 42-story post-Gothic Revival church is the tallest campus building in the Western Hemisphere and the tallest campus building in the world. The building is actually the realization of the idea of the tenth president, John T. Portman. Shortly after John came to Pittsburgh in 1921, he decided the university needed a landmark building. In the same year, with the help of the Mellon family, he acquired a plot of land for construction. The church was designed by Charles Lauder, and construction began in 1926 and was completed 11 years later, in 1937.

It can only be said to be a qualified zoo. Traditional animals can be seen here, but it seems that the number of each animal is not too large. It also contains a small aquarium, which is also quite standard.

Stunning grounds and an incredible selection to view. Easily one of my favourite places to visit in Pittsburgh. The gift shop offers a lot, and the food and drinks selection in the cafe were great, even with special dietary requirements.

In fact, this place has nothing to do with the church, or we can only say that its appearance is like an ancient European cathedral. This is a teaching building, but it is very magnificent and beautiful, and you can go in and take a look inside.
