Trulli, Rione Monti

4.3/5
15 reviews
Trulli, Rione Monti is one of the best-preserved complexes of conical stone dwellings in Europe. Trulli are a unique type of dry-stone construction built without mortar, relying solely on limestone blocks stacked in layers, with conical roofs formed by stones corbelled outward layer by layer. This architectural technique dates back to prehistoric times and is still used in the Itria Valley today. Originally scattered across the countryside as farmhouses, animal shelters, or storage for farm tools, Alberobello is where these trulli are clustered together. The town preserves over 1,500 trulli, mainly concentrated in two areas: the Rione Monti district in the south features approx. 1,000 conical-roofed houses, with various handicraft shops lining the streets, and many shop owners invite visitors inside to see the interior structure of the trulli; the Rione Aia Piccola district is smaller and retains a more authentic residential character, with no commercial shops, offering a quieter atmosphere perfect for a leisurely stroll. As you wander through, you will see layers of white limestone walls and gray conical roofs.Alberobello · 23.7km from Polignano a Mare

Old Town was founded in the 7th century and is situated on a limestone peninsula on the Adriatic coast, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic." The old town is surrounded by well-preserved medieval walls. Walking along the walls offers panoramic views of the stretching red-tiled roofs, monastery bell towers, and the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. Walking the walls is an unmissable experience when visiting this ancient city. Entering from the Pile Gate on the west side, you are greeted by the Stradun, the main street that runs through the old town, lined with buildings showcasing a variety of architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The Minceta Fortress at the northwest corner of the walls is the highest point, offering views of the entire old town and the distant sea. Outside the walls, the Lovrijenac Fortress stands on a seaside rock and is another great spot for overlooking the panoramic view of the old town. Known as a "city museum," this old town is also the main filming location for "King's Landing" in the TV series "Game of Thrones," and you will often encounter familiar scenes while strolling through it.Croatia · Dubrovnik
Sorrento

Sorrento

Sorrento is located near the Bay of Naples, with the entire town built atop seaside cliffs. The famous Italian song "Come Back to Sorrento" sings of this very town. The song has been sung for a century and has become a unique cultural symbol of Sorrento. The 16th-century poet Tasso was also born here, and the town square is named after him. The town is surrounded by lemon groves and olive trees, and Limoncello, a lemon liqueur made from local lemons, is a signature specialty of Sorrento. Piazza Torquato Tasso is the central starting point for sightseeing. Next to the square is the Valley of the Mills, a deep gorge embedded in the heart of the city, where abandoned old mills remain at the bottom, overgrown with vegetation. The Cloister of San Francesco was built in the 14th century, with arches and columns arranged in an interlaced pattern along the cloister. Museo Correale houses medieval sculptures, paintings, and local decorative arts, while the Museum of Wood Inlay is dedicated to showcasing the wood inlay craftsmanship that has continued in Sorrento for hundreds of years. Looking out from the edge of the cliffs, you can see the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius and Capri. The streets and alleys of the old town are winding, and the Marina Grande fishing village on the coast retains a rustic atmosphere, with colorful houses arranged along the harbor.Italy · Sorrento

Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coastline on the southern side of the Sorrento Peninsula in the province of Salerno, southern Italy. It extends from Positano in the west to Vietri sul Mare in the east, with over a dozen coastal towns built into the cliffs along the way. Steep cliffs, terraced hillsides, and the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea form the core scenery here. The terraces are planted with lemon trees, grapevines, and olive trees, presenting a typical Mediterranean coastal landscape. The representative towns along the coast each have their own unique characteristics. Positano is famous for its cascading colorful houses and steep stone steps, with buildings clinging to the hillside from the beach upwards; the town of Amalfi was once the center of a medieval maritime republic, and it is filled with narrow alleys and staircases, where the facade of theCathedral of St. Andrew, blending Arab and Norman styles, is a landmark of the town; Ravello sits high on a ridge, and the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone offer views overlooking the entire coastline, among which the "Terrace of Infinity" at Villa Cimbrone is a viewing spot for a panoramic view of the coast. Vietri sul Mare is known for its traditional handmade ceramics, and colorful pottery shops can be seen everywhere in the town. The "Path of the Gods" from Agerola to Positano is a classic hiking route. It follows the ridge, offering high-altitude views of the coastline and the full panorama of the towns along the way. The region is famous for a slender variety of Amalfi lemon, and the local limoncello made from it is also a specialty. The coastal road is winding and narrow, prone to traffic jams in summer, and ferries are also available for travel between the towns.Italy · Amalfi

Cathedral of Saint Sabinus

Cathedral of Saint Sabinus

The Basilica of San Sabino is located in the old town of Bari in southern Italy and is one of the important religious buildings in the area. Its official name is Bari Cathedral. The church was mainly built in the 12th–13th centuries on the site of an earlier Byzantine church and is a representative of Apulian Romanesque architecture. The exterior uses light-colored stone, with a simple and solemn facade decorated with a rose window, arcades, and exquisite stone carvings; the interior is characterized by a tall nave, arches, and a serene and solemn space. The crypt houses the relics of Saint Sabino and also preserves religious artworks such as images of the Virgin Mary. Ancient ruins can also be seen near the church, and some areas display traces of early Christian architecture.Bari · 32.9km from Polignano a Mare

Sassi di Matera

23 reviews
Sassi di Matera is a vast, ancient cave settlement carved into the cliffs along the Gravina River canyon. The history of human habitation here dates back to the Paleolithic era, and it is considered one of the earliest human settlements in Italy. The entire cave area consists of two main districts, Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso. Dwellings, churches, and even animal pens were carved directly into the soft limestone rock, with roofs often serving as streets for neighbors, and stone houses cascading down the entire valley slope. Historically, local farmers and herders carved caves into the rock face to live in, gradually developing into a permanent village. Due to poor living conditions within the caves, most residents moved to the new city, and the old district fell into decline until it was restored and redeveloped at the end of the 20th century. Today, as you stroll through the stone alleys, you can enter cave dwelling museums that recreate the daily life of farmers from the past, visit hundreds of rock-hewn churches scattered throughout the area—many of which still retain frescoes from the Middle Ages—and find that many caves have been converted into hotels, restaurants, and shops. Because the landscape of the mountain city resembles ancient Jerusalem, it has frequently been chosen as a filming location, with movies such as "The Passion of the Christ," "Wonder Woman," and "No Time to Die" all filmed here. The Sasso Caveoso district is closer to the original cave form, with most of the rock-hewn churches and cave dwelling museums concentrated there, while the Sasso Barisano district has undergone more restoration and has a more orderly appearance. At dusk, head to the Piazzetta Pascoli viewpoint or look back from the Murgia Plateau on the opposite bank; the expanse of caves filling the valley slope in the sunset and lights is an iconic image of Matera.Matera · 63km from Polignano a Mare

Ravello is perched high above the coastal cliffs, with the winding coastline and terraced orchards below. The mountain scenery is beautiful, and the mansions and historic buildings built by wealthy merchants along the cliffs remain to this day, creating a unique atmosphere. When visiting, the two cliffside gardens are the key highlights: the viewing terrace at the end of Villa Cimbrone faces the endless sea, making it a classic vantage point for overlooking the coastline; another historic mansion features cloisters and terraced gardens with a unique fusion of styles, and its scenery has inspired many literary and artistic works. The cathedral in the town center houses exquisite carved pulpits, which is also worth a visit. The town is built into the mountainside, and the main views are within walking distance, offering visitors a romantic and cultural experience.Italy · Ravello

The Cathedral of Naples is an important church in Naples, the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Naples, dedicated to the city's patron saint, Saint Janaro. The church preserves the blood of the saint, and the "miracle of St. Janallo" happens every May and September, when the clotted and dried blood of St. Janallo turns into a liquid again. The Bishop's Cathedral of Naples was built in 1272 by the order of Charles I of the Count of Anjou. The nave of the church is very spacious, and the top is decorated with ornate inlays. The 1456 earthquake damaged the church and it has been rebuilt numerous times into its current neo-Gothic appearance. In addition to the church, there is also a small garden and a small underground museum to visit.Italy · Naples

When the weather is good, this place is absolutely beautiful, so my reminder is to make sure the sky is clear before you go, so that the photos will look good. Otherwise, if it is gray, although it is also beautiful, the photos taken will not have that fairy-tale feeling. The photos below were taken on a cloudy day, so the sky is not very blue. This place is definitely worth a visit, especially in the summer. It is very beautiful. There are many special shops, restaurants, cafes and places for handmade leather products.

The free-to-open Old Town of Dubrovnik is a living medieval museum! 4.4 points, 72 reviews, the cobblestone road connects the Pile Gate, the Cathedral, and the Catalan Avenue. It is a check-in spot for tourists during the day and a place for locals to live at night. Don't just chase the same style as "Game of Thrones", go into the alleys to find the handmade olive soap sold by the old lady, and watch the locals basking in the sun in the seaside cafe for an afternoon. The soul of the old city is hidden in these fireworks details. It is on the list of water play and summer vacation, because even the sea breeze brings a comfortable factor🌊

Diocletian's Palace, located in the heart of Split's Old Town, is more of an old town than a palace. Two-thousand-year-old stone walls have blended into cafes and residential buildings; the clock tower, a later addition, offers panoramic views of red rooftops and the Adriatic Sea. The cellars now house souvenir stalls, the air thick with the scents of stone and olive oil. A few meters apart outside the south water gate, the masts of yachts and ancient Roman columns create a sense of time standing still. It's usually quite crowded, but in the evening, after the tourists have left, it quiets down, and you can hear your own footsteps on the cobblestone streets.

I met a group of cats eating macaroni in Ravello Compared to Amalfi, I prefer Ravello, which is known for its music. It is also the filming location of Wonder Woman, and the scenery is endless. I met a group of cats eating macaroni here, fat and friendly. The weather is cold, drink a cup of sweet cappuccino in the town cafe, and stroke the cats' fur. Who doesn't want this kind of small town life to escape the hustle and bustle?
