Porto Cathedral
No. 10 of Best Things to Do in Portugal

Porto Cathedral

7.8
4.7/5
121 reviews
Porto Cathedral stands prominently on a hill in Porto, one of the city's ancient monuments. The facade is almost devoid of decoration, making it quite unique among church architecture: two square bell towers flank the sides, with a Romanesque rose window and a Baroque-era portico set against a plain facade, while the crenellated battlements above give the entire structure a fortress-like appearance. The Baroque loggia on the side facade, designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, adds a touch of splendor to the exterior. Porto Cathedral stands majestically on the high ground of the old town, one of the ancient buildings still existing in Porto and an important example of Romanesque architecture in Portugal. The cathedral was first built around 1110 and largely completed in the 13th century, with Gothic and Baroque elements added over the following centuries: the Romanesque nave, Gothic cloister, and Baroque loggia coexist within the same structure, making a visit akin to flipping through a three-dimensional architectural history book. As a city landmark that has existed for nearly a millennium, the church was built approx. in 1110, with construction spanning a century. Even today, many intricate architectural features remain fascinating. The square bell towers on either side of the church are quite unique due to their nearly bare facades, while the crenellated structures at the top incorporate castle-like elements. Additionally, the interior features many delightful blue-and-white tile murals, a hallmark of Portuguese architecture.Portugal · Porto

Built along the hillside, narrow cobblestone streets extend toward the riverbank, lined with colorful traditional buildings. Red-tiled roofs, balconies, arches, and street-side shops create a distinct urban landscape. Ribeira Square, located along the river, is an important public space in the district, surrounded by restaurants, cafes, bars, and souvenir shops. Visitors can relax at outdoor seating areas and enjoy the view of the Douro River and Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite bank. Sightseeing boats are moored at the riverbank docks. Taking a boat allows you to admire the architecture along the Douro River and the bridges connecting the two banks, among which the Luís I Bridge is particularly striking.Portugal · Porto

Chapel of Souls is located on Rua de Santa Catarina in the city center of Porto, Portugal, and is one of the representative religious buildings in the area. It was built in the early 18th century, with the overall building based on a simple stone structure, featuring an entrance, arched decorative windows, and a two-story bell tower on the front. A distinctive feature here is the large area of traditional blue-and-white Portuguese tiles covering the exterior walls. The tile decoration was completed in 1929, and the images depict the lives of Saint Francis and Saint Catherine, as well as religious stories. The blue-and-white patterns extend along the front and side walls, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding busy commercial street. The interior of the building features a main altar, side altars, and religious art decorations, including an altarpiece depicting the Ascension of Christ, as well as stained-glass windows.Portugal · Porto

The marina is located in the heart of the old Porto city, on the edge of the Douro River. Historically, merchant ships from here were an important means of trade for the city and the world. Notorious historical wars also took place here, and there is a bronze relief to commemorate this historical moment. Today this area is loved by Portos and tourists alike, with countless bars, cafés and restaurants filled with smiling people day and night. The charming medieval old buildings, the old streets and alleys, the Porto wine cellar on the opposite side of the Gaya Pier, the Don Luis I iron bridge, the traditional upturned boats floating on the river... Some people say that this is the best place in Porto. A romantic place, indeed it is a wonderful thing to sit under a medieval arch and have dinner with a loved one. The Libera Pier at the festival has beautiful fireworks, which makes the area more popular. Walking west along the river bank, past the square, you can see the Casado Infante, located in Ruada Alfândega 10. The navigator Prince Henry was born here in 1394. Historically, it used to be the customs office of the city. It is now used to store the city archives, including Prince Henry's baptism of birth and his notes, as well as many materials related to the city. found here.Portugal · Porto
Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace

4.6
This Crystal Palace in Porto was built for the industrial and agricultural exhibition held in Porto in 1865. Just like its name, this domed steel-framed glass structure is full of waterscape-like transparency. The unique frame structure gives it a modern feel even after many years. It is said that when the Crystal Palace was built, it was inspired by the Crystal Palace in London, England. It was designed by Jose Carlos Lorero and features an interior vaulted basement. In 1951, the Crystal Palace was demolished for a time, and then a new building was rebuilt in the same place, continuing to use the name Crystal Palace. Today's Crystal Palace, surrounded by beautiful flowers and trees, has become a venue for sports events and trade fairs, which can accommodate 5,000 people at the same time. There are also fountains, libraries, performance halls and cafes near the venue to provide supporting services.Portugal · Porto

The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte is located on Mount Espinó, on the outskirts of Braga in northern Portugal. It is a historic Roman Catholic pilgrimage site. Its most famous feature is the magnificent zigzag Baroque steps, which climb 116 meters. Along the way, there are many chapels, fountains and sculptures depicting the scenes of the Passion of Jesus. The sanctuary was built in the 14th century, and the existing buildings were mainly built from the 18th to the early 19th century, combining Baroque and neoclassical styles. Among them, the famous "Five Senses Steps" symbolize vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch through fountains, reflecting the combination of religion and art. To facilitate tourists to climb to the top, one of the earliest cable cars in the Iberian Peninsula was built in 1882 and is still in operation. There are old towns along the Douro River. Although they look a bit shabby at first glance, I really like the atmosphere of history that is a bit dilapidated. The old town is also colorful and well-arranged, and it looks even more lovely under the sunshine. There are many small shops in the old street where you can stroll around and buy some local specialties. There are also many scenic restaurants along the river where you can spend a very relaxing afternoon.

There are so many people. The bridge has two floors. The lower floor is mainly for traffic, and the upper floor has a large number of hikers and trams. You can stop to admire the Douro River and the buildings on both sides. The scenery is very good. There are railways and trams on the bridge, so you must pay attention to safety and be careful about your finances.

The Holy Spirit Church in Bodo is a blue and white porcelain tile building. It uses tiles to collage stories from the Bible. It is very creative and distinctive. It is very conspicuous at the corner and is also a photo spot. If you have the opportunity, you can come to Bodo. It is a very beautiful attraction!

The Baroque Library of the University of Coimbra can be said to be the best place in the entire University of Coimbra. It is also listed among the top ten most beautiful libraries in the world. It is magnificent and many of the building materials are wooden. There are three main halls, each with murals on the four continents, disciplines and related qualities. It is also the prototype of the library in the movie Harry Potter.

Bom Jesus do Monte is a notable sanctuary and pilgrimage site situated on a hill in the outskirts of Braga, a historic city in northern Portugal. Inscribed in 2019 as a UNESCO world heritage site, the sanctuary is completely accessible to the public and does not charge any entrance fee. The most iconic feature of the sanctuary is the monumental Baroque stairway leading to the Church of Bom Jesus do Monte. We took a taxi which send us to the church directly we so skipped climbing up the 577 steps on the 116-metre stairway. Instead we walked down the stairway after visiting the sanctuary complex. An alternative way to reach the church is by taking the water-powered funicular. The fee is 2 euros for a one-way journey and 3 euros for a round trip.
