The Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus / Mount of Santa Luzia, located in the city of Viana do Castelo, Portugal, is one of the city's iconic religious buildings, situated atop Mount Santa Luzia, overlooking the Lima River and the Atlantic coast. Construction of this church began in 1904 and took over 50 years to complete, finishing in 1959. It blends Byzantine and Gothic architectural styles, with a magnificent exterior. The church's dome towers into the clouds and is one of the landmarks in northern Portugal. Visitors can reach the top by cable car or on foot to enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. Gil Eannes Foundation
Built by the Viana do Castelo shipyard, the Gil Eanes hospital ship began serving as a hospital in 1955, providing decades of support to the Portuguese cod fishing fleet operating off the Newfoundland and Greenland banks. Following the decommissioning of the cod fishing fleet, the hospital ship lay idle in the Lisbon docks for many years. In 1998, the Gil Eanes Foundation (FP), recognizing it as a cultural and emotional legacy of the city, rescued it from the scrapyard at a cost of approximately €250,000, following an unprecedented activity involving all sectors of Viana do Castelo society. On January 31, 1998, it was warmly welcomed in Limafosse and, after cleaning and restoration, opened to the public, becoming a center of attraction for Viana do Castelo.
