Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is located on the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Along with Iguazu Falls and Niagara Falls, it is known as one of the three major waterfalls in the world and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989. In 1855, explorer David Livingstone followed the thunderous roar and mist to this site, naming it after Queen Victoria of Britain. The locals, however, have always called it "Mosi-oa-Tunya," meaning "the smoke that thunders." During the flood season, the mist from the falls can rise hundreds of meters into the sky, visible as a perpetual "white smoke" from dozens of kilometers away. Rocky islands like Livingstone Island divide the falls into five sections, from west to east: Devil's Falls, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Eastern Falls. The western Devil's Falls plunges into the abyss with overwhelming force, its deafening roar and imposing presence deterring close approach. Rainbow Falls, with its greater drop among the five sections, earns its name from the perpetual rainbows refracted by the mist at the cliff. Both banks feature viewing trails, with the Zimbabwe side facing most of the waterfall curtain and the Zambia side adjacent to Livingstone Island, each offering distinct perspectives. The view changes noticeably with seasons: during high water, the massive flow forms a continuous curtain, drenching nearly every visitor in spray at close range; in low water, exposed rock walls reveal the canyon's full profile. On clear nights with a full moon, rare "moonbows" may appear in the mist. Victoria Falls Bridge
Victoria Falls Bridge spans theZambezi River, connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia, and is situated over the Batoka Gorge downstream from Victoria Falls. This steel arch bridge serves rail, road, and pedestrian traffic and is currently the primary rail link between the two countries. The bridge deck is approx. 128m above the river at the bottom of the gorge, making it a classic spot for viewing the Zambezi River gorge scenery and the mist from the falls. The bridge is widely known for the extreme sports activities held there. It has long hosted experiences such as bungee jumping and zip-lining. The bungee jump is approx. 111m high and is one of the iconic experiences here; the zip-line allows you to glide along a cable from the Zambia side of the bridge to the Zimbabwe side, crossing the gorge. As the bridge spans the border between the two countries, the bungee jump is vividly described as "a leap that belongs to no country." Even if you do not participate in extreme sports, the view from the bridge deck alone is breathtaking—the mist from Victoria Falls and the gorge scenery are in full view here. Victoria Falls, also known as Mosi-oa Tunya Falls, is located on the Zambezi River in Africa, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is one of the three largest waterfalls in the world. It is approximately 1.7 kilometers wide and 108 meters high.
In 1855, Scottish explorer David Livingstone became the first European to see Victoria Falls and named it after Queen Victoria. Locals call it Mosi-oa Tunya (Tongan for "smoke that roars like thunder").
