Established in 1885, Banff National Park is a core component of the "Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks" World Natural Heritage site. Emerald glacial lakes are set like jewels among the dark green coniferous forests, earning the park its reputation as the soul of the Rocky Mountains. One of the park's signature views is Lake Louise, whose water takes on a distinctive emerald green due to glacial minerals; backed by Victoria Glacier, the lakeside hiking trails lead to mountain tea houses and higher viewpoints. Moraine Lake, set against the Valley of the Ten Peaks, mirrors the spire-shaped peaks on its surface and once appeared on Canada's old twenty-dollar bill. Bow Valley Parkway is a classic scenic drive in the park, where bighorn sheep, elk, and other wildlife are often seen along the way, and a slow drive in fall is especially rewarding. The Icefields Parkway extends north from near Lake Louise, linking glacial lakes such as Peyto Lake and Bow Lake, with views of multiple glaciers in the valleys along the route. Banff Town is located in the heart of the park and is the main visitor community within it, offering distant views of Sulphur Mountain from town. A ride on the Sulphur Mountain cable car takes you to the summit observation deck, where on clear days you can look down over the Bow Valley and the outlines of distant peaks. The park also features natural hot spring pools, and soaking in them after outdoor activities is a choice many visitors make. Radium Hot Springs is located in southeastern British Columbia, Canada, nestled in the dramatic Sinclair Canyon on the south side of Kootenay National Park. The village of Radium Hot Springs is a mountain town of about 1,339 people, named for the trace radioactive elements found in its waters. The springs were originally known as Sinclair Hot Springs, but after researchers from McGill University detected trace amounts of radon (a decay product of radium) in the water, the name was changed to Radium Hot Springs. The springs have long been a place of healing and relaxation for indigenous peoples. The water is rich in sulfates, calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, and other minerals, with more than 700 mg of minerals per liter. The water is odorless and tasteless and has a striking blue color. There are two main pools here: a hot pool and a cold pool, catering to different visitor preferences.
