Tarim River is China's largest inland river. It is formed by the confluence of the Aksu River (originating in the Tianshan Mountains), the Yarkand River (originating in the Karakoram Mountains), and the Hotan River, before flowing into Taitema Lake. Geographically, the Tarim River basin encompasses the 114 headstreams of the nine major water systems that converge toward the center of the Tarim Basin, the main stream of the Tarim River, the Taklamakan Desert, and the eastern desert region. Tarim River water flow varies significantly with the seasons. Whenever the scorching summer arrives, snow and glaciers melt, causing the river's flow to surge dramatically, racing and roaring through deserts and grasslands like an "unbridled wild horse." Many water conservancy facilities have been built in the Tarim River basin. Through the diligent efforts of people from all ethnic groups, the former deserts have been transformed into fertile fields, with orchards full of fruit and the scent of rice blossoms filling the air along both banks of the river.Xayar · 34.3km from downtown

The ancient name of Shaya is "Shayan Prefecture", which was first seen in "New Book of Tang Dynasty: Western Regions": "Tang's Tuqishi Shayan Prefecture". Shaya County has a long history and profound cultural heritage. It is an important town on the ancient Silk Road, an important part of the ancient country of Qiuci, and a place where Eastern and Western cultures converge. Four ancient civilizations, including Persian civilization, Egyptian civilization, Indian civilization and Chinese civilization, merged here. Many traditional Chinese cultural elements such as Chinese culture, Western Region culture, Qiuci culture, and reclamation culture blend and shine together. The ruins of the ancient city of Wushikat, located north of Yingmaili Town, Shaya County, is a large-scale one among the ruins of the ancient city group of Qiuci. It consists of a palace city, an inner city and an outer city. The locals call it "Wushikat", which means "three-layer city". It is one of the larger ancient city ruins in southern Xinjiang. "The Book of Jin" records that "the custom of Qiuci country is to have a city wall, and its city is three-layered, with thousands of pagodas and temples in it." According to the Biography of Ban Chao in Volume 47 of the Book of the Later Han Dynasty, "The next year, Chao was appointed as the Protector General of the Western Regions... Chao lived in Taqian City, Qiuci." In addition, the Book of the Later Han Dynasty, Biography of the Western Regions, also records that "Ban Chao 'lived in Taqian City, Qiuci'". From this, we can know that in the third year of Yongyuan in the Eastern Han Dynasty (91 AD), the Han Dynasty appointed Ban Chao as the Protector General of the Western Regions, and Taqian City, where Ban Chao lived, was the seat of the Western Regions Protectorate in the early Eastern Han Dynasty. In 1953, two Han Dynasty copper seals, "Han Guiyi Qiang Chief" and "Li Chong's Seal", were unearthed at the site of the ancient city of "Ushkat" (Sanchongcheng), which fully demonstrated the important position of the city when the Han Dynasty ruled the Western Regions. Li Chong was the Protector General of the Western Regions during the reform period of Wang Mang in the Han Dynasty. These two seals are now in the collection of the National Museum of China, and the labels indicate that they were unearthed in Shaya County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Since modern times, there have been six relatively important field archaeological surveys of the "Triple City" in the Shaya County area, which recorded the preservation status of the ancient city of "Wushkat" (Triple City) in different periods. In the "Archaeological Records of the Tarim Basin" written by Mr. Huang Wenbi, a famous archaeological expert in my country, there are detailed records of the location, size and layout of "Wushkat" (Triple City). Archaeologist Mr. Wu Bolun also investigated the ancient city of Wushikat in Shaya County in 1953. Mr. Wu Bolun believed that: "Based on the location and architectural form of (the ancient city of Wushikat), it may be the Yancheng, the capital of the ancient Qiuci State, and the location of the Tang Dynasty's Western Regions Protectorate. It is further explained that the ancient city of 'Wushkat' (Triple City) is Taqian City". In July 2014, the ruins of the ancient city of Wushikat (Taqian City) were included in the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units. Taqian City is an important landmark for the central government to effectively govern the Western Regions and is the military and political center of the central government's governance of the Western Regions. From 16 AD, Li Chong, the Protector General of the Western Regions, moved the Protectorate of the Western Regions to Taqian City and stationed there for 8 years. In 91 AD, the Eastern Han government established the Protectorate of the Western Regions in Taqian City. When Ban Yong suppressed the rebellion, the Western Regions had "three openings and three connections". It was extended to 152 AD when Wang Jing became the Chief of the Western Regions. Taqian City has experienced nearly 70 years of ups and downs. In order to construct Chinese cultural symbols to reflect the visual image of the Chinese nation, condense the national spirit and tell the Chinese story well, Shaya County built and completed the Taqian City Retro Project 25 kilometers southwest of the county seat. Taqian City covers a total area of 747 mu and a total construction area of 34,000 square meters. It is planned and laid out according to the "three-layer city" form of the "Ushkat" ancient city ruins. The project aims to fully respect history and try to restore the historical facts that the central government of the Western Han Dynasty exercised effective jurisdiction over the Western Regions. The core performance IP of the Itqian City Attraction, "Seal of the Western Regions, Silk Road Huazhang", is mainly composed of 4 core performances: the opening ceremony, the seal of the Western Regions, the return of justice, the dream of Qiuci and the camel bells of thousands of miles, the millennium post station, and the 5D light and shadow show. The main business formats in the city include: city wall sightseeing, the Great Seal Museum, the camp of the Chendu Weiying, the camp of the Eight Lieutenants, the Yinshui River, hotels, characteristic homestays, horse market street, gold market street, folk snack street, palace garden, Dezheng Hall (South Palace, North Palace), three dynasties and five gates, Hanfu lamp wall, faith road guide, palace music and dance theme restaurant, and trade totem, etc. Through a series of antique buildings, the life forms of the ancient Shaya officials and the people under the rule of the Xicheng Protectorate are reproduced, and through the later situational and immersive performances, people of all ethnic groups and tourists from all over the country can fully feel the profound historical and cultural heritage of Shaya and experience the unique ancient Western Regions.Xayar · 17.8km from downtown

King Palace In Kuqa is located in the old town of Kuqa County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang. It served as the residence for generations of Kuqa's local Uyghur princes since 1759. The original palace was reduced to ruins, and the current structure was meticulously reconstructed on its original site based on the memories of the last Kuqa prince, Dawut Mahsut. Covering a vast area of approximately 200–300 meters in length and width, the palace complex features multiple Uyghur-style buildings with vibrant interior designs, offering excellent photo opportunities throughout. The grounds include beautifully landscaped gardens and green spaces, creating a pleasant environment. The palace tour is divided into three main sections: the Kucha cultural exhibition area, the palace visiting area, and the ancient city wall. Visitors can explore the site on foot, with a recommended visiting time of around 2 hours. The Qiuci Culture Exhibition Area showcases the cultural customs of the ancient Qiuci Kingdom in Xinjiang's history, featuring numerous textual and pictorial descriptions, precious artifacts of Qiuci Buddhism, as well as exhibits of production tools, coins, and folk crafts from the ancient Qiuci Kingdom. The old city wall is an ancient structure within the princely residence and can be briefly viewed. The key visiting area is the princely residence section, which is displayed in its original form, including items once used by successive Kuqa kings. Wax figures recreate the daily life scenes of the princely family, allowing visitors to explore and experience the atmosphere of the Kuqa kings' lives. It's important to note that Dawut Mahsut, the last Kuqa king (also the last prince officially recognized by China's central government) who once resided in the princely residence, passed away on July 30, 2014. Visitors today can no longer meet him but can only tour the princely residence.Kuqa · 56.5km from Xayar

Nalati Scenic Area is located in the heart of the Tianshan Mountains and the eastern end of the Ili River Valley, a subalpine meadow grassland formed on ancient alluvial deposits. Legend has it that when the westward-expanding Mongol army crossed mountains to reach this place, they suddenly saw a sunlit plain carpeted with flowers. The soldiers exclaimed "Nalati," which means "the place with sunlight" in Mongolian, giving the area its enduring name. The attraction integrates snow-capped mountains, forests, valleys, meadows, and rivers, primarily divided into several sections: the River Valley Grassland, Sky Grassland, Panlong Valley Trail, and Wolta Jiaota. Along the River Valley Grassland by the Gongnaisi River, visitors can find Tawusani (meaning "beautiful mountain valley" in Kazakh), ancient tombs from the Wusun people of the Han dynasties, and the Grassland Tribe recreating Wusun tribal life. Following the uphill ride on the mountain road leads to the Sky Grassland, a high-altitude meadow suspended among peaks. The Tianjie Terrace at the boundary between the valley and grassland offers expansive views, while Snow Lotus Valley at the trail's end is often shrouded in mist, with snow lotuses blooming in midsummer. The Panlong Valley Trail is a forest loop without backtracking, flanked by towering Tianshan spruces. The Wolta Jiaota section is ideal for hiking, with the Tianxian Terrace providing stunning views of sunrise above sea of clouds. From June to September each year, the grassland enters its golden season, with lush green pastures and blooming wildflowers everywhere. Kazakh herders drive herds of cattle, sheep, and horses into summer pastures, where scattered yurts and curling smoke create a picturesque scene. Visiting the attraction during this time allows you to ride horses, try archery, and dress in traditional ethnic costumes. You might also encounter traditional equestrian activities like horse racing, kokpar (goat grabbing), and kyz kuu (girl chasing), experiencing the authentic Kazakh nomadic culture between snow-capped mountains and meadows.China · Xinyuan

Kalajun Attraction is located in the southeast of Tekes County, Yili, about 30 kilometers away from the county seat. It is one of the famous grasslands in Xinjiang and a famous attraction that tourists cannot miss when visiting Xinjiang West Line (Yili Loop Line). Kalajun grassland is in the shape of continuous hills, backed by towering snow-capped mountains. There are also forests, flowers and other landscapes on the grassland. The scenery is vast and beautiful, making it a great place for sightseeing and photography. Kalajun in a broad sense refers to the Kalajun Ecological Tourism Area, which includes the East and West Kalajun, Koksu Grand Canyon, Zhongtianshan Snow Peak and Tianlai Forest. Each Attraction sells tickets separately and is far away from each other. The Kalajun Grassland generally refers to the East and West Kalajun Attraction, which is also the main destination for tourists to visit the Kalajun Grassland. The East and West Kalajun Attraction sell tickets together and use the same shuttle bus. It takes about 1-2 days to visit, and you can choose to stay on the grassland for one night in the middle. You can also come in the morning and return to Tekes County to stay in the evening. The gate of the Attraction is located in the Kushitai Comprehensive Service Area, which is also the place where chartered or self-driving vehicles need to stop. Private vehicles are not allowed to enter the area after that. If tourists come from Tekes County by Bus to the Attraction , they can also go directly to the Bulaq Ticket Station After arriving at the Bulaq Ticket Station, you need to buy tickets and sightseeing bus tickets in the Attraction, and then take the sightseeing bus to play. The area in the Attraction is very large. The sightseeing bus will first circle the West Kalajun Attraction, and then go to the East Kalajun. The One-way journey takes about 1 hour. The junction of East and West Kalajun is located at the World Heritage Exhibition Center. Generally, tourists start to visit the Attraction at noon. You can visit West Kalajun on the first day, get off at the World Heritage Exhibition Center, return to the World Heritage Exhibition Center on the second day, and take a bus to visit the East Kalajun Attraction before leaving. The main scenic spots in Xikalajun Attraction include Wangyutai, Marmot Habitat, Liangyitai, Dielanggu, Shiquan, Yinmawan, Yikeshu, etc. You can take a bus to visit them one by one. Liangyitai, Dielanggu and Shiquan are still some distance away from the shuttle bus stop, and it takes about half an hour to walk from the stop. Xikalajun Scenic Attraction is dominated by rolling hills. Dielanggu is a typical hilly grassland. In summer, it is a good place for photography with layers of green. Dongkalajun is located deep in the grassland and is also the essence of the entire grassland. The characteristic attractions here include the Five-Flower Meadow, Flower Platform, Kuerdai Forest Grand Canyon, Sanji Planation Observation Deck and Falcon Platform Observation Deck. There are snow-capped mountains, grassland scenery, forest canyons, etc. The scenery is diverse and very beautiful. However, the five attractions are a little far from the parking spot of the sightseeing bus. You can reach them by hiking from the parking spot for about 0.5-1 hour. The Five-Flower Meadow and Flower Platform are the wonderful attractions. One is an open meadow full of colorful wild flowers, and the other is where you can take pictures of the snow-capped mountains behind the grassland. They are all very beautiful and are the essence of the Attraction that cannot be missed.China · Tekes County

Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon is also calledTianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon, located in northern Kuqa, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang. "Kizilia" means "red cliffs" in Uyghur, as the grand canyon is composed of massive red-brown mountain formations. The red-brown peaks of Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon soar into the sky, appearing like clusters of burning flames under sunlight. Entering the canyon and walking among the reddish-brown mountains feels like stepping into a tranquil, cool world. The canyon mouth is quite open, but as you venture deeper, the path winds through peaks, alternating between wide and narrow sections—some spots are barely wide enough for one person to pass sideways. The canyon floor is relatively flat, allowing for leisurely strolls most of the time, flanked by towering rock walls. Looking up, against the backdrop of the blue sky, countless bizarre peaks and rocks take on myriad forms: the divine dog guarding the valley, the swirling ancient castle, the apparition cave, the jade maiden spring, and views like the Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon's resting camel peak—each vividly lifelike. Hidden in the canyon, the Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon-Ai Grotto is less than 2 km from the valley entrance, perched high on a sheer cliff. Research indicates the grotto was built during the mid-Tang dynasty. The small cave measures less than 5 m in depth and approx. one person's height, with an arched ceiling. Fragments of murals remain on three walls, unusually featuring Chinese characters—a stark contrast to hundreds of other grottoes in ancient Western Regions, clearly showcasing traces of Han culture.China · Kuqa

Kurdenin Scenic Area – a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, national water conservancy scenic area, and AAAA-rated attraction – is located in the southeastern forest region of Gongliu County, 55 km from the county town. In April 2000, it was designated as the West Tianshan Nature Reserve by the State Council. Home to the Tianshan Mountains' unique species, the Schrenk's spruce, it serves as the global habitat and origin of these spruces and Central Asian wild fruit forests, earning its reputation as the "Green Valley of Tianshan and the Hometown of Schrenk's Spruce." Recognized as a World Natural Heritage Site, national 4A-level attraction, and natural oxygen bar, it ranks as China's top forested area for negative oxygen ions. The official bird, tree, and flower of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture all originate here. Additionally, it serves as a sketching and creative base for the China Artists Association and a training base for mountaineering. Kurdening means "horizontal valley" in the local herders' language. This is a broad north-south mountain valley covering 1,176 square kilometers with an average elevation of about 1,500m. Its unique north-south orientation creates pleasant year-round temperatures—warm winters and cool summers. The area combines the grandeur of northern landscapes with the delicate beauty of southern China, making it an ideal summer retreat. The attraction features the snow-capped Mount Kabamba, standing majestically at 4,257m among the peaks—one of the most famous mountains in the western Tianshan range. To its left lies a hidden reclining Buddha naturally formed by snow-capped spruce-covered ridges. This nature's masterpiece presents a perfectly proportioned sleeping Buddha with its head toward sunrise and feet toward sunset, exuding serene tranquility. The scenic area showcases breathtaking landscapes of forests, grasslands, snow mountains, streams, canyons, and waterfalls. As the most densely forested part of the Tianshan Mountains, it boasts exceptionally rare spruce forest resources with complete primitive forest types and vegetation—representing a particularly typical example of the entire Tianshan forest ecosystem. Preliminary statistics show 1,594 species of vascular plants and 223 species of wild vertebrates, earning its reputation as a "natural gene bank" of Eurasian continental wildlife species. Tour routes: Shuttle bus routes: Attraction visitor center (take shuttle bus) -> Heritage center (walk, visit exhibition hall) -> Mount Kabanbay (view from distance) -> Iron bridge (walk) -> Tianshan Sleeping Buddha (view from distance) -> King Spruce (take sightseeing bus) -> Cloud Grassland (walk down via wooden boardwalk) -> Restaurant (walk, dine at Green Valley Resort or fast food restaurant) -> Heritage center parking lot (walk) return to visitor center (take shuttle bus) Self-driving routes: visitor center -> entrance of the middle valley in Kurdenin Scenic Area -> + Li Gallery -> Bee Fragrance Station -> Kafeng Base Camp -> Qimengde Viewing Platform -> Ayousai Viewing Platform -> hike to the King of Spruces -> hike to the Sleeping Buddha of Tianshan (distant view) -> hike to the Grassland Above the CloudsChina · Gongliu

20230725 afternoon: 1. "Tarim River" is located in the 4A scenic spot "Lobu Village". Lobu Village is an original Lobu theme cultural park, with large and small desert lakes scattered all over the place, commonly known as "Lop Nur", gathering oasis, poplar forest, Taklimakan Desert, Goddess Lake, Tarim River and other different landforms, is a good place for sightseeing photography, desert entertainment, and cultural experience. The scenic area is divided into four major areas: Lobu Cultural Exhibition Hall, Abudan Square, Desert Area, and Goddess Lake. The scenic area is the filming location of TV series such as "China Exploration", "The Great Protector of the Western Regions", and "Anarhan". ① Address: No. 53, Forestry Bureau, Bayingu West Road, Yuli County, Bayingol Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. ② Transportation: No public transportation, easy to park by car. ③ Peak season: In autumn, the poplar forest is golden, and the hottest season has passed. ④ Time: 4 hours. 2. On the big screen in the visitor center, the beautiful scenery of golden poplar trees dotted in the desert oasis in autumn is played in a loop. However, it is summer now and most of the poplar trees are green leaves, so you can only feast your eyes on the screen. Below the screen is a sand table model map of the core area of the scenic area, which is more intuitive. 3. The Tarim River is the longest inland river in China and the mother river in southern Xinjiang. It originates from the Tianshan Mountains and the Karakoram Mountains. It is 2,179 kilometers long. The main road flows into the "Taitema Lake" and once flowed into Lop Nur in ancient times. The river is relatively wide, and there is a wooden bridge on the lake. The totem signs at both ends of the bridge are photo spots.

This modern-day princely mansion, built in the last century based on the oral recollections of the last prince, is a somewhat lackluster attraction—you can't really skip it since you're already there. However, it's still quite pleasant to stroll around when connected to the old alleyways outside. The basic infrastructure of the scenic area is quite good; the restrooms are very clean, and the cleaning staff are always on hand. The staff are also very friendly.

Narat Grassland is quite beautiful, especially the aerial grassland, which is stunning. You can drive there; just buy a self-driving ticket. There are also shuttle buses. The area is quite large. Panlong Valley Road, however, was just average, not as beautiful as I expected. The river valley grassland was teeming with cattle and sheep, but since it was nearing autumn, the grass wasn't as green anymore. I happened to be there during a grassland music festival. There were no celebrities, and the audience wasn't large, but the park was very well organized. There were large, clean temporary restrooms, and plenty of police, so everything was orderly. The only downside was that the parking lot was a bit far from the concert venue, as the venue was quite large. Because it's relatively remote, there weren't that many tourists there.

Recommended attractions include the Qimengde Viewpoint, where a wooden boardwalk offers panoramic views of the snow-capped mountains and spruce forests; the Ayousai Viewpoint provides views of the snow-capped peak of Kabanbay Peak; and the Ten-Mile Gallery features winding streams with dappled sunlight, creating a natural gallery effect. Summers are cool and pleasant, ideal for self-driving or camping. Tent campsites and wooden cabins are readily available within the scenic area, while wild fruit forests and ancient spruce trees add to the rustic charm, making it a secluded and less-traveled gem on the Ili route.

Bayinbuluke is definitely worth a visit. Besides swans, we also saw Siberian red-billed gulls at the Swan Sanctuary, and the interaction between the lambs and swans was particularly interesting. It's really cold up there, so be sure to dress warmly! The scenic area is much larger than I expected. From the entrance to the main attractions, even with no stops and a speed limit of 60 km/h, it takes about an hour, so be sure to allow plenty of time. The weather was exceptionally good the second time, and I wanted to go back in to watch the sunset. However, when I arrived at the scenic area at 6:30 PM, the staff said the sightseeing bus had already stopped running, so I unfortunately missed it. 🥲 If you want to see the sunset, be sure to check the last sightseeing bus time in advance. Also, if you're driving, after watching the sunset, drive slowly and carefully as it gets dark.
