Tribe of the Three Gorges

4.5/5

Tribe of the Three Gorges is located on both banks of Dengying Gorge in the Xiling Gorge section of the Yangtze River, between the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam. It consists of areas such as mountain dwellings, water dwellings, and riverside dwellings, presenting a concentrated display of the original ecological charm of the gorge. The visit combines boat tours and walking, and the ferry crossing the Yangtze River itself is part of the experience. The highlights of the mountain village are concentrated on the slope overlooking the river: the wooden stilt houses, built along the mountain terrain, are lower in the front and higher in the back with winding corridors, and the rooms inside restore the living scenes of the ancient inhabitants of the Gorge. In the Bawang Village and Bawang Palace, built to imitate ancient Ba people's mountain strongholds, visitors can watch folk songs and dances, listen to Tujia girls singing antiphonal songs, taste a bowl of bowl-smashing wine, and experience the ancient and mysterious Ba-Chu culture. Continuing up the mountain road, one can also see the towering "Stone Token" and the "Shadow-play Stone" standing on the cliff top. The outlines of these peculiar rocks resemble the Tang Monk and his disciples; when illuminated by the setting sun, they look like figures on a shadow-play screen, making them popular photo spots. You can hike up the mountain or take the cable car. The waterborne dwellings stand at the river bend where Longjin Stream meets the Yangtze, with ancient sailing boats braving the wind and fishermen casting nets, recreating the generations-old river life of fishing families who made boats their homes. Here, one can also hear the powerful and resonant boatmen's work songs. Longjin Stream, where the riverside dwellings are located, boasts emerald-green waters and serene beauty, earning it the nickname "Little Jiuzhai of Hubei." Local girls wash clothes on riverside rocks while singing folk songs, and black-canopied boats gently sway on the stream. The lively Tujia wedding customs performance before the stilt houses features amusing elements like bride snatching, wedding laments, and tossing the embroidered ball, often inviting travelers to play the groom's role. The scene of trackers pulling boats along the stream further unfolds, making the journey feel like stepping into a living scroll of river valley folk culture.China · Yichang

Yangtze River Three Gorges

The Yangtze River Three Gorges is a grand canyon formed by the Yangtze cutting through the Wushan Mountains. It stretches nearly 200 km from White Emperor City in Fengjie, Chongqing, in the west to Nanjin Pass in Yichang, Hubei, in the east, connecting three gorges—Qutang, Wuxia, and Xiling—from west to east. This stretch of river has served as a vital waterway between Ba and Chu since ancient times. Li Bai's verse "Departing at dawn from White Emperor City veiled in colorful clouds" depicts the eastbound journey from the gorge entrance, while Du Fu left his famous line "The endless Yangtze rolls on and on" in Fengjie. Each gorge has distinct characteristics, often summarized as "majestic Qutang, graceful Wuxia, and perilous Xiling." Qutang Gorge spans only about 8 km but is renowned for its sheer cliffs. At Kuimen, its entrance, the river abruptly narrows to less than 100 m between knife-cut bluffs—a scene featured on the back of China's fifth series CNY 10 banknote. Ancient plank road holes and Wind Box Gorge's hanging coffins remain visible on the cliffs. Wuxia Gorge extends over 40 km like a winding gallery, with the Twelve Peaks lining its banks. Goddess Peak stands elegantly photogenic in morning mist. Xiling Gorge was once notorious for rapids, but the Three Gorges Dam has transformed its upper reaches into a "high gorge with placid waters." Riverside landmarks like White Emperor City and Huangling Temple are worth visiting. Cruising is the best way to experience the gorges. Long-distance ships sail downstream, while short round-trip boats shuttle through key sections. Watching peaks drift by from the deck offers a more immersive perspective than shore viewing. Morning mist often creates ideal conditions for photographing Kuimen and Goddess Peak. Cliffside plank road relics and inscriptions may flash by during the cruise—keep an eye out to avoid missing them.China · Yichang

Tianzhu Mountain is located in Qianshan City in southwest Anhui Province. This scenic area is renowned for its majestic peaks, secluded caves, unique pines, and peculiar rocks, and is designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Tianzhu Mountain offers breathtaking beauty, thrilling adventures, and endless fun. You can hike to the summit to admire Tianzhu Peak from afar, traverse the exhilarating Qinglong Ridge, explore ancient passes and fortresses, delve into Mystery Valley, or enjoy a panoramic view of the stunning Liandan Lake. The sea of clouds at Tianzhu Mountain is also a spectacular sight. Travel tips Spring, summer and fall are the best seasons to visit Tianzhu Mountain. The attraction mainly consists of the west and east sections, with three typical routes: the small west loop, the new west route, and the grand loop. The small west loop is relatively easy and suitable for visitors with less than a day. The new west route is a classic itinerary covering the entire west section, requiring a full day. The grand loop allows you to enjoy both sections' scenery but demands good physical condition, so a two-day hike is recommended. The south gate is the main entrance to the attraction. However, after purchasing admission tickets at the visitor center, there is a mountain road leading to the south gate. Visitors can take the scenic bus to the lower station of the cableway. Currently, Tianzhu Mountain has three operating cableways: Muyanghe cableway (cableway 1), Dalongwo cableway (cableway 3), and Longtanhe cableway (cableway 4). Tour guide From the south gate, you can either hike or take the Dalongwo cableway to ascend the mountain. It is recommended to take the cableway up to avoid a less scenic section. After the cableway ride, there are two diverging paths leading to Zongguanzhai or Shenmigu (mystery valley). It's suggested to take Shenmigu, where massive rocks form various caves, then visit Feilaifeng (flying peak) and Tianzhufeng (heavenly pillar peak), before returning via Zongguanzhai for descent. This forms the west gate small loop route. Tianzhu peak stands at an elevation of approx. 1,488 m and cannot be climbed, only admired from a distance. However, it remains shrouded in clouds and mist for approx. half of the year, so spotting it depends on luck. Crossing the "Immortal crossing bridge" leads to the summit of Tianchi peak, which offers one of the best vantage points for viewing Tianzhu peak. On clear days, this spot provides expansive views and serves as an excellent location for watching sunrises, sea of clouds, and sunsets. After viewing Feilai peak and Tianzhu peak, if time permits, you can continue along the new route to admire Penglai peak, visit Baiyue platform, then pass by Writing desk - Immortal cave - Qinglong ridge - Qinglong pavilion - Lotus peak, and reach Liandan lake. If you have good stamina, you can continue descending via Huamei ridge - Yingzhen peak - Dansha pavilion - Tianzhu mountain villa route. If you have two days and are in good physical condition, you may choose to stay overnight at Tianzhu mountain villa and explore Dongguan the next day. The Qinglong ridge is a massive, narrow mountain ridge on Tianzhu mountain, offering an exhilarating walk that leads to the Wanjing platform, a viewing deck surrounded by cliffs on three sides. Standing on the platform amidst swirling clouds and mist feels like soaring through the skies. Nestled on the mountainside, the Liandan lake is another breathtaking attraction of Tianzhu mountain. The view from above is especially stunning, and you can also descend to stroll along its shores. As the saying goes, "the east route is perilous while the west route is scenic." The east route presents greater climbing challenges than the west route, featuring more steps carved directly into bare boulders with often bottomless cliffs on one side, requiring extra caution. It's particularly demanding on physical stamina (the east route sequence: Immortal peach rock - Warbler ridge - Echo platform - Thousand-zhang cliff - Great heaven gate - Magpie bridge - Mysterious valley ladder - East gate). Da Tianmen is a valley between two mountain peaks, featuring a long and steep stone staircase that ascends imposingly towards the sky, making it the most physically demanding section of the Dongguan route. The Queqiao bridge beyond Da Tianmen is even more perilous, with cliffs on one side and a sheer drop on the other. Although guarded by iron railings, extreme caution is required when crossing. The Qigu ladder is renowned for its steepness and narrowness, resembling a "thread of sky" in some sections, where climbers must use both hands and feet to pass through.China · Qianshan

The midday performance could be improved, but the afternoon performance was very good; the young man playing the flute by the bamboo forest stream was very pleasant to listen to 👍, and the scenery along the way was picturesque. I recommend taking the time to complete the entire route 😃.

This was totally worth it! The cruise was exceptionally long, offering views of almost both banks of the Yangtze River. However, the toll area at the bow was quite expensive; it cost over 300 yuan for one adult and one child! My friend and I, being adults, immediately ran away when we heard that price. Also, if you're going to be taking lots of photos outside the boat, be sure to dress warmly, as the river wind is really strong, especially at night when it gets quite cold. But it's very close to Mixue Ice Cream & Tea, so you can grab a hot drink there when you disembark.

The museum exhibits more than 200 cultural relics including stoneware, bronzeware, ceramics, lacquerware, inkstones, calligraphy, etc., including the Eastern Han Dynasty four-eared net-patterned pottery urn, the Southern Dynasty bronze cauldron, the Sui Dynasty four-god inscribed bronze mirror, the Sui Dynasty green glaze four-handled pan-mouth pot, the Ming Dynasty Lanting stone inkstone, the Ming Dynasty Longquan plate, etc. The exhibition is rich in content, integrating art appreciation and cultural relic appreciation, and is a vivid teaching material for the general public and young friends to learn history and understand Xiantao.

Visiting Chibi in October amidst autumn rains, a thin mist drifts across the Yangtze River. Looking north to Wulin, it feels like stepping back 1800 years to an ancient battlefield. Standing atop Chibi Rock, gazing at the rolling river, I finally understand the meaning of the line, "The great river flows eastward, its waves washing away countless heroes of the past. West of the old fortress, it is said, lies the Chibi of Zhou Yu of the Three Kingdoms." The stone statue of Zhou Yu stands silently here, the two characters "Chibi" on the cliff weathered by time. A river breeze carries the echoes of war drums and sails from bygone days. Across the river lies Wulin, the place where Cao Cao's army encamped and retreated after their defeat. Across the river, north and south, lies a fire that shaped the course of history. Ancient steles, massive rocks, the mighty Yangtze—a visit here is not merely about sightseeing, but about encountering the Three Kingdoms era.

The current tourist attraction model is basically that the visitor center is 6-8 kilometers away from the main gate, and you can only buy a shuttle bus ticket, otherwise you'll be exhausted before you even start climbing. The scenery at Tianzhu Mountain is quite good, with natural landscapes and strangely shaped rocks, exceeding expectations. Overall, it's a great place, recommended, less crowded and beautiful. Climbing Tianzhu Mountain is said to bring good fortune; wishing everyone good luck!
