Feel the dense shade of Lushan Mountain. There are more than 10 ancient temples of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, including Guangfu Temple, Sanjiao Temple, Mengduan Temple, Zushi Hall, Guanyin Pavilion, Queen Mother Hall, Qingyang Palace, Yuhuang Hall and Wuzu Temple, which were built in the Han, Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties. Although the religious rules and philosophical thoughts are different, they can live in harmony in the same mountain for thousands of years, each teaching its own religion, which is rare in China. Lushan, also known as Frog Mountain, is located 5 kilometers south of Xichang City. It is adjacent to Qionghai Lake and rises from the ground. With the momentum of "half of the wall supports the sky, Ningcheng is a painting screen", it forms one of the major Attraction in southwest Sichuan with Qionghai Lake and is known as the "Southern Sichuan Scenic Spot". Located on the south bank of Qionghai Lake 5 kilometers south of Xichang City, it is one of the provincial scenic spots in Sichuan. Lushan Mountain is 2,317 meters above sea level. It is adjacent to the mirror-like Qionghai Lake in the east, the winding and beautiful Anning River in the west, the historical ancient city of Xichang in the north, and the towering Luoji Mountain in the south. There are towering ancient trees on the mountain, especially lush pine trees. The ancients used "pine wind, water and moon" to describe the scenery of Lushan and Qionghai Lake, that is, the pine trees of Lushan Mountain, the wind of Anning River, the water of Qionghai Lake, and the moon of Xichang.Xichang · 6.4km from downtown

Qionghai Lakeis located in Xichang, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Historically known as Qionghai Lake, it is a natural lake formed by crustal subsidence. The lake sits at an altitude of approx. 1,500 m, with a water surface area of approx. 30 sq km. Xichang has long been known as the "Moon City." The line "The moon rises over Qionghai Lake, its brightness clearing the nine heavens" perfectly captures the moonlight on this lake. The "Moonlit Night at Qionghai Lake," one of the historic "Eight Scenery Spots of Jianchang," remains a beloved scene among locals. A distinctive feature of this lake is the continuous wetlands surrounding it. Wetland areas such as Bird Watching Island, Mengli Shuixiang, and Yanyu Luzhou are distributed along the lake, with wooden boardwalks winding through reeds, lotus ponds, and metasequoia trees. In summer, lotus flowers blanket the Mengli Shuixiang area, and egrets often pace along the shallows. Winter marks the peak bird-watching season. From November to March, flocks of migratory birds, such as black-headed gulls, fly in from the north to overwinter. Scenes of gulls gathering are common around Bird Watching Island and Moon Bay. With Xichang's abundant winter sunshine, watching seagulls while basking in the sun is a daily winter routine for many locals. The greenway around the lake is fully connected, spanning a loop of approx. 35 km. It connects landmarks such as Small Fishing Village, Moonlight Customs Town, Dashiban Ancient Village, and Jinlin Beach. Renting a bicycle or electric scooter to ride sections of the route is less strenuous, but you should reserve most of the day if you want to complete the entire loop. The Small Fishing Village on the north shore retains its traditional fishing village charm. You can look across the lake at Lushan Scenic Area or sit down for a meal of fresh lake seafood. The east shore is perfect for watching the sunrise in the morning, while the lakeside is the ideal spot to enjoy the moon at night.Xichang · 9.3km from downtown

Ancient City of Jianchang

Ancient City of Jianchang is located in the old town center of Xichang and is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in southwest Sichuan. Xichang was known as Qiongdou in ancient times, and since the Qin and Han dynasties established counties here, it has served as an important town on the southwestern frontier through the ages. The Jianchang Garrison City was built here during the Ming Dynasty, and the city walls have survived for over 600 years. You can still find ancient bricks on the walls inscribed with the reign titles of different dynasties, like a chronicle built into the bricks and stones. The basic layout of the ancient city is well-preserved, with the three city gates—Xichang Datong Gate, Anding Gate, and Jianping Gate—serving as its prominent landmarks. Located at the intersection of the Southern Silk Road and the Tea Horse Road, the bustling atmosphere left by traveling merchants continues to this day. Climbing the tower of Xichang Datong Gate offers a bird's-eye view of the old streets and alleys with their continuous grey-tiled roofs. The neighborhoods, having undergone comprehensive protection and restoration, have regained their Ming and Qing dynasty appearance. During the day, it is perfect for strolling through old courtyards and tasting snacks in the stone-paved alleys. At night, when the lights come on, the whole city glows with vibrant colors, making it a great place to experience the night scenery and local charm of Xichang.Xichang · 851m from downtown

Dashiban Ancient Village is located on the shores of Qionghai Lake in Xichang, at the foot of Lushan Scenic Area. It is a homestay resort renovated and built on the basis of the original appearance of the old village. It was once a post station on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. The bluestone paths, old adobe walls, and gray-tiled courtyards largely retain their original appearance. The faint sound of chanting from Lingying Temple, an ancient temple in the village, weaves together a sense of antiquity and the vibrancy of daily life. Strolling along the bluestone lanes, you might encounter a homestay converted from an old house at a corner, or stumble upon a snack stall wafting with aromas. Every brick, tile, object, and scene exudes a nostalgia for days gone by. The best way to experience this place is to take your time: wander slowly through the lanes during the day, looking at the old walls, ancient trees, and villagers sitting at their doorways soaking up the sun. If you get tired, find a cafe or teahouse to rest. Some tourists come specifically to stay for a few nights. In the early morning, you can open your window to see layers of gray-tiled roofs, and a short walk will take you to the shores of Qionghai Lake to enjoy the lake views. The overall pace of the ancient village is very slow, making it suitable for a relaxing vacation and taking photos to unwind. In the evening, the light in the old lanes is soft, and every casual snapshot is full of character.Xichang · 12.9km from downtown

Qionghai has a number of large attractions including a birdwatching island, “dream water town,” “misty egret island,” and “rippling reflection of a crane.” Walking and cycling paths ring the lake, so it is easy and fun to view the scenery or birdwatch whether you walk or bike. Jinsha Beach is also known as Jinlin Beach, a paradise for children to play. While I am in the cold northern nights, you are getting a tan at Jinlin Beach in Xichang. There are two places in Xichang where it is easy to get a tan: one is the Small Fishing Village, and the other is Jinlin Beach. The sun is strong here; even before the first lunar month is over, children are already wearing swimsuits to play in the water, and running barefoot with their pant legs rolled up to catch small fish and shrimp by the shore. The water at Jinlin Beach along Qionghai Lake is quite clean, and little snails are basking warmly in the sun on the shallow beach.Xichang · 12.7km from downtown

Anha Yizhai Fairy Cave, a huge magma type, is called "Si Ju Se Ju" by the Yi ethnic group and it is near Xixi in the south of Xichang City. The stalactites in the cave are strange in all forms, with some like palaces and yards while some like mountains and rivers. There are also streams in the cave, known as "Yinhe River," flowing through stalactites. There are multiple halls in the cave, expanding to the deep one by one. People can also visit the underground rivers, deep pools, karst valleys and stalagmites, etc.Xichang · 20.8km from downtown

Taking the cable car up the mountain saves energy, while the toboggan ride down adds to the fun. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Qionghai Lake – the scenery is beautiful. There are many monkeys on the mountain, and feeding them is quite fun, just be careful.

A visit to Jianchang Ancient City is a must when in Xichang. This 600-year-old Ming and Qing dynasty city retains a vibrant, down-to-earth atmosphere, unlike some completely commercialized imitations. Centered around the Four Archways, the ancient city features nine main streets and eighteen alleys. The cobblestone streets, old courtyards, and city walls all exude a strong sense of history. Everywhere you look, you'll find Yi ethnic minority shops and intangible cultural heritage handicrafts, making for great photo opportunities. It's recommended to visit in the evening. As night falls and the lanterns light up, the atmosphere is exceptionally beautiful. Climbing the city walls offers panoramic views of the old city. The streets are full of street food, offering a wide variety of local delicacies such as oil tea, rice rolls, and roasted potatoes at affordable prices. You can sit and relax in one of the shops when you get tired. The ancient city is free to enter and easily accessible. It's recommended to allow 2-3 hours for a leisurely stroll. The only minor drawback is that electric scooters sometimes travel through some streets and alleys, so please be careful where you step. It's a great place to experience the local culture of Xichang and definitely worth a visit.

(1) Dashiban Ancient Village is quite ordinary and small for an ancient village. It has a few guesthouses, but the presence of Lingying Temple makes it special and worth a visit. Parking is convenient, and it's not far from Xichang. (2) Dashiban Ancient Village is located in the Qionghai National Tourist Resort Area, backed by Luoji Mountain and surrounded by mountains on three sides, facing Qionghai Lake. The village was first built in the Ming Dynasty and rebuilt during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty. It was once an important post station on the Tea Horse Road and the Southern Silk Road. Historical buildings such as Lingying Temple and the Five Provinces Guild Hall still exist.

I cycled around Qionghai Lake, and the scenery was breathtaking! Knowing there was a Xichang launch base, I had a stereotype that Xichang was barren, a Gobi oasis at best. Well, I apologize! Here, the mountains and lakes are breathtaking, birds are singing, and flowers are blooming. Fruit trees grow outside every house around the lake. I was superficial. Qionghai Lake is beautiful!

The Moonlight Style Town on the shore of Qionghai is at the foot of Lushan Mountain. There are many restaurants and homestays here. The trail around the lake is very wide. Many tourists gather in front of the check-in statue by the lake. There are also occasional cruise ships and seagulls and wild ducks playing in the lake. The homestays by the lake are beautifully built, with large viewing windows and large green lawns. Here you can relax in the sun, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and spend a wonderful leisure time.
