West Lake

4.7/5
37.4k reviews

West Lake is the core scenery of Hangzhou, with cloud-covered mountains on three sides and the city on one, and the two long causeways, Su Causeway and Bai Causeway, lie across the lake surface, dividing the water into several stretches large and small. Among the lakeside highlights, the "Ten Scenes of West Lake" handed down from the Southern Song dynasty rank first, and together with the later "New Ten Scenes of West Lake" and the "Three Reviews of the Ten Scenes of West Lake," over a hundred attractions spread out along the lake shore and the surrounding mountains, with pavilions, terraces, temples, and pagodas, gardens, causeways, and islands setting off one another against the distant mountains and nearby waters; the legend of the Broken Bridge, where Bai Niangzi and Xu Xian met, adds a touch of story to the lake and hills. There is no need to insist on visiting every spot; simply choosing a stretch of shoreline and wandering slowly is pleasant enough. You can explore West Lake on foot, by cycling, by the sightseeing electric shuttle that circles the lake, or by boat. The shuttle route makes exactly one full loop around the lake, saving effort and being convenient; cycling along the lakeside is leisurely and romantic, with many public bicycle rental points along the shore; if you want to take a boat, the several piers around the lake offer different boat types and routes, and it is recommended to take a boat to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon in the center of the lake while enjoying the lake views from the water along the way; alternatively, you can hail a rowboat at the lakeside and let the boatman row you around the lake for a more free and flexible experience. Attractions on the north shore are concentrated. The usual route starts from Lingering Snow on the Broken Bridge in the northeast corner, follows Bai Causeway to Solitary Hill, and along the way you can see cultural views such as the Xiling Seal Art Society, the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, the China Seal Museum, and Zhongshan Park–Pavilion for Releasing Cranes, taste a bowl of authentic West Lake vinegar fish at Louwailou, and then pass Xiling Bridge to the Temple of King Yue and Breeze-Ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden. In summer when the sun is strong, you might instead walk along Beishan Road, hide under the dense shade of the trees, and look at the curve of Broken Bridge and the swaying weeping willows on Bai Causeway; along the way there are many entrances where you can climb Baoshi Hill for high views; in the evening, the live performance Impression West Lake on Yue Lake is also well worth seeing. If you have plenty of time and energy, you can also get on the Su Causeway from around the Temple of King Yue and walk to enjoy the full view of West Lake. Hubin Road to Nanshan Road along the southeast shore is another area with a dense concentration of attractions. Hubin Road sits at the junction of the urban area and the scenic area, right next to the downtown commercial district, making it suitable for a short stop for travelers on a tight itinerary; by the lake there is also the iconic musical fountain and a cruise pier. From Hubin Road heading south along Nanshan Road, Orioles Singing in the Willows, the Long Bridge, Leifeng Pagoda, and Evening Bell at Nanping Hill line up one after another, and further west is Viewing Fish at Flower Harbor. The distances between adjacent attractions are convenient to cover on foot or by sightseeing bus, and you can choose a few to visit according to your preferences. Leifeng Pagoda and Evening Bell at Nanping Hill are best scheduled for the evening—listening to the bell at Jingci Temple and climbing Leifeng Pagoda to look down over the lakes and hills in the twilight are both excellent experiences.

Lingyin Feilai Peak Scenic Area is located west of West Lake Scenic Area, including Lingyin Temple andFeilai peakTwo main views.Feilai peakNot large or tall, yet it gathers hundreds of statues of bodhisattvas and eminent monks from different dynasties, creating a beauty of fusion. The Lingyin Temple in the mountains is a famous ancient temple in Hangzhou, bustling with incense offerings. Lingyin Feilai Peak Scenic Area itself is not very large, and you can explore it on foot. After entering the main gate, turn left, and you'll see it in no time.Feilai peak, following the forest trail for less than 5 minutes, you'll see the entrance to Qinglin Cave. It's said that the stone slab in front of the cave was once the sleeping bed of Ji Gong, and lying on it is believed to free one from worldly troubles, attracting many travelers to take a rest here. Heading north, the Yuru Cave houses exquisite statues of the Eighteen Arhats from the Northern Song Dynasty, with additional finely crafted statues of the Six Patriarchs of Zen Buddhism on both sides of the cave's eastern entrance. The Longhong cave ahead is commonly known asGuanyin caveInside, there is a rock crevice known as "a thread of sky." Not everyone can see the light passing through the crevice, so you often see people craning their necks to look up. The cliff outside the cave is covered with stone carvings of Buddha statues. At the lower part, you can see the Song Dynasty carving of "the white horse carrying scriptures." The Ligong Pagoda at the entrance of Longhong Cave is the only remaining Ming Dynasty pagoda in Hangzhou. Following the Cold Spring Stream from here, you can also see the big-bellied Maitreya. Opposite the stone carvings stands the famous Lingyin Temple, which is open to the public free of charge but requires real-name reservation in advance, and is still well worth a visit. The statue of Skanda in the heavenly king hall is a relic from the Southern Song dynasty, carved from a single piece of camphor wood, making it extremely precious. The newly renovated Yongfu Temple in Hangzhou is located next to Lingyin Temple. Follow the signs uphill to reach it. Besides the serene ancient architecture, the temple grounds also feature a tea plantation and many ancient trees, offering quite a scenic view. Visitors must return the same way from Yongfu Temple. For those who wish to hike, there is a fork in the path halfway back to Lingyin Temple, leading to Taoguang Temple's exit and onward to Beigao Peak. This route is quiet with few people, making for a pleasant walk. Beigao Peak can be reached by hiking or taking a cable car. At the summit, the Temple of the First Wealth God under Heaven is one of Hangzhou's famous ancient temples.

Lingyin Temple

8.7
4.7/5
21.1k reviews

Lingyin Temple, also known as "Yunlin Temple," is located at the foot of Lingyin Mountain on the west side of West Lake. With its serene environment, it is the oldest renowned temple in Hangzhou, preserving numerous exquisite cultural relics from various dynasties. This is the place where Jigong became a monk, and it is said that prayers made here are very efficacious, attracting a continuous stream of worshippers every day. Seventeen hundred years of trials have made Lingyin Temple a treasure trove of history and culture: the plaque inscribed "Yunlin Chan Temple" hanging in the heavenly king hall was written by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty; the stone pagoda in front of the main hall and the stone sutra pillar in front of the heavenly king hall are relics from the Wuyue period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms; the temple houses precious Buddhist artifacts such as ancient palm-leaf scriptures, a gilded statue from the Eastern Wei dynasty, a handwritten copy of the "Diamond Sutra" by Dong Qichang of the Ming dynasty, and the wooden dragon sutra from the Yongzheng era of the Qing dynasty. Lingyin Temple is also where the monk "Jigong" (Daoji) was ordained. In the Daoji Chan Master Hall of Lingyin Temple, a statue of Jigong is enshrined, holding a broken fan in his right hand, prayer beads in his left, and resting his right foot on a wine jar. Lingyin Temple is nestled against the Northern Peak and faces Feilai Peak. Though Feilai Peak is not tall, it features numerous fantastically shaped caves and over 340 Buddhist rock carvings dating back to the Five Dynasties period, making it a rare gem of ancient grotto art in southern China. The temple enjoys year-round bustling incense offerings, especially on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month or major Buddhist festivals, when devotees flock from all directions, creating massive crowds.

Nanxun Ancient Town

Nanxun Ancient Town

8.6
4.6/5
18k reviews

Nanxun Ancient Town is located in Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province. Since its establishment as a town in the Southern Song Dynasty, it has prospered due to the silk trade. From the Ming and Qing dynasties to the Republic of China period, it was one of the wealthiest towns in the Jiangnan region, and there was a folk saying that "the whole city of Huzhou is not worth half a town of Nanxun." Rivers run through the town, and rows of old houses with white walls and dark tiles line both banks. Compared with other ancient water towns in Jiangnan, what makes Nanxun unique is its Chinese-Western hybrid architectural style—the silk merchants of Nanxun accumulated enormous wealth through international trade and also brought Western architectural elements back to their hometown. Many mansions and gardens incorporated Western columns, stained glass, and other components into traditional Jiangnan architecture, which is quite rare among ancient towns in Jiangnan. The core attractions of the ancient town are concentrated along the river on South East Street and South West Street, and it is relatively convenient to start touring from Little Lotus Villa. Little Lotus Villa is the private garden of Liu Yong, a great wealthy man of Nanxun. In the garden, the lotus pond, Taihu stone rockeries, and flowers and trees set each other off beautifully, and it is a representative of the ancient town's garden views. The adjacent Jiaye Hall Library was built during the Republic of China period by Liu Chenggang, grandson of Liu Yong. It was once a large-scale private library in modern China, and the building itself also presents a Chinese-Western hybrid style, with a two-story corridor-style pavilion surrounding the courtyard, and the doors and windows on the ground floor are hollow-carved with seal-script characters, very exquisite. Walking north along the river, attractions such as Zhang Shiming's Former Residence, Liu's Ti Hao, Qiushu Li, Guanghui Palace, and the Silk Industry Guild Hall are distributed in sequence on both sides of the street. Zhang Shiming's Former Residence is known for its exquisite wood carvings and Western glass windows, and is a typical example of Chinese-Western hybrid architecture; Liu's Ti Hao likewise blends Chinese and Western architectural elements and has a distinctive style. Continue north to the end of South East Street, and on the opposite bank of the river are the Hundred-Room Tower and Zhang Jingjiang's Former Residence. The traditional dwellings of the Hundred-Room Tower stretching along the river have a strong sense of daily life. In the early morning and at dusk, you can see locals living by the river in their everyday water-town life, making it suitable for strolling and taking photos. The ancient town as a whole is not large, and a quick tour takes about half a day, but if you want to savor the architectural details of the residences and gardens in each place, it is recommended to allow more ample time.

Putuo Mountain Scenic Area

8.5
4.7/5
39.5k reviews

Putuo Mountain is the sacred site of Guanyin Bodhisattva, renowned as the "Putuo Mountain Scenic Area." Visitors and pilgrims never miss the three grand temples—Puji, Fayu, and Huiji—along with the 33m-tall Nanhai Guanyin statue. The mountain's charming coastal scenery adds to its allure, offering delightful experiences like strolling along Qianbu Sands and admiring the reclining Buddha view over the sea. Putuo Mountain Island is located east of Zhoushan Island, with no road access—only ferry service to Putuo Mountain Pier is available. The elongated island spans approx. 7 km in length, with attractions spaced 2–10 km apart. Nearby attractions can be explored on foot, while distant ones are accessible via the island's itinerary buses departing from the pier's passenger terminal. Additionally, Foding Mountain offers cable car rides, and Luojia Mountain—a small island approx. 5 km east of Putuo Mountain—is reachable by boat (accessible exclusively from Putuo Mountain Island as part of the Putuo Mountain Scenic Area). The attractions in Putuo Mountain Scenic Area are mainly distributed across three zones. Visitors can explore all attractions within each zone together, with each zone requiring approximately half a day to visit. Travelers can plan their itinerary based on their accommodation location and arrival time on the island. Zone 1: Centered around Puji Temple, the western side of the island features attractions like the West Heaven Scenic Area. As the island's main temple dedicated to Guanyin, Puji Temple stands alongside the Duobao Pagoda, one of Putuo Mountain's three treasures. The West Heaven Scenic Area boasts numerous attractions including Pantuo Rock, Heart Character Rock, and Meifu Temple. Zone 2: In the southern area, you'll find attractions like the Nanhai Guanyin statue, Zizhu Forest, Bukenqu Guanyin Temple, and Nantian Gate. The Nanhai Guanyin statue is the island's landmark structure, while Bukenqu Guanyin Temple holds legendary tales of Putuo Mountain that you won't want to miss. Zone 3: Centered around Foding Mountain, the area features two temples: Fayu Temple and Huiji Zen Temple. The other two treasures of Mount Putuo - the Nine Dragons Caisson Ceiling and the Yangzhi Guanyin Stele - are located in Fayu Temple and Yangzhi Zen Temple adjacent to it respectively. If time permits, you can also take a boat to Luojia Mountain, which typically requires about half a day. In addition to these religious attractions, there are two bathing beaches on the eastern side of the island: Thousand-Step Sand near Fayu Temple and Hundred-Step Sand near Purple Bamboo Grove. Visitors who enjoy ocean views and water activities are welcome to visit.

Shenxianju

8.4
4.7/5
16.9k reviews

Shenxianju is nestled among the mountains of Xianju, Zhejiang, as a typical area of volcanic rhyolite landform. The rock masses left by ancient volcanic activity have been shaped by long-term weathering and erosion, forming clusters of peculiar peaks, deep valleys and cliffs, where every mountain, stream, rock and peak boasts its unique charm. Pan Lei, a scholar of the Hanlin Academy in the Qing dynasty, remarked after his visit, "Tiantai is serene and Yandang is precipitous, yet Xianju possesses both." This comment precisely captures the essence of this place, which combines the strengths of two renowned mountains. The signature photo spot in the attraction is Ruyi bridge—modeled after a traditional jade ruyi scepter, this two-tiered bridge with partial glass decking spans a deep gorge, creating a cloud-walking illusion on foggy days. Suspended bridges like Wolong bridge, Yuanmeng bridge, and Hongmeng bridge connect with viewing platforms along the way, forming a scenic loop between cliff walls. Nantian summit is a cantilevered glass platform overlooking mountain peaks; the lotus terrace near Foying Lianyun faces Guanyin peak, where rising mist makes visitors appear to stand amid clouds—a popular photography location. The Guanyin peak, resembling the Buddhist deity, serves as the attraction's icon, visible head-on when taking the cable car up from the south gate. Ancient tadpole-shaped inscriptions called "tadpole celestial script" on cliff walls remain undeciphered, adding mystery to the landscape. The attraction has two entrances and exits, south and north, connected by the Nantian and Beihai cableways respectively. An escalator named Nantian ladder is also built on the south gate side, allowing travelers to reach the ridge directly via cableway and escalator without climbing, and then take a gentle tour along the cliffside walkway. Many travelers choose to enter from the south gate and exit from the north gate, as the downhill route is more effortless. It takes about half a day to visit the main attractions. In early summer during the rainy season, the waterfalls are abundant and the mountain is cool. In winter when the temperature is low enough, the flying waterfall freezes into ice falls hanging in front of the cliff, each offering unique views. The outdoor sports area built along the cliff also features activities such as via ferrata climbing. Travelers who want to combine sightseeing and sports can give it a try.

Tianyige Museum

8.2
4.8/5
20.5k reviews

Tianyige Museum is located on the west bank of Yuehu Lake in Ningbo. It is a book collection culture museum centered around Tianyige, a private library from the Ming Dynasty. The Tianyige library was built during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty (1561-1566) under the direction of Fan Qin, a retired vice minister of the Ministry of War. With a history of over 400 years, it is one of the oldest surviving private libraries in China and ranks among the world's ancient family libraries. The building features layered bookshelves and preserved reading desks, exuding a profound scholarly atmosphere throughout. The entire museum is also a tranquil Jiangnan-style garden, with rockeries, ponds, and pavilions scattered across the east and south gardens, connected by rustic brick-and-wood corridors. The Mingzhou stele forest in front of the Zunjing Pavilion houses over a hundred ancient steles, many of which record the history of rebuilding prefectural schools in Ningbo through the dynasties. The calligraphy and painting gallery hosts various exhibitions year-round, occasionally showcasing its collection of precious artworks from different eras. Within the garden, you can also find Dongming Cottage, the book collection site of Fan Qin before the Tianyige Museum was built, the Fan Family Residence where the Fan clan once lived, and the Qin Family Ancestral Hall renowned for its Zhu gold-lacquered woodcarving opera stage. Easily missed is the Mahjong Origins Exhibition Hall, which was converted from the family ancestral hall of Chen Yumen, a Ningbo native in the late Qing Dynasty. Various mahjong sets and historical materials recount how modern mahjong took shape here and spread across the world.

Hengdian World Studios

8.1
4.7/5
35.9k reviews

Hengdian World Studios is located in Hengdian Town, Dongyang, in central Zhejiang Province, adjacent to Yiwu, which is famous for its small commodity market. It is one of the largest film and television shooting bases in China and is known as "China's Hollywood." It is not actually a single city, but rather composed of multiple attractions scattered throughout and around the town, such as the Qin Palace, Ming and Qing Palace Garden, Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, Guangzhou Street/Hong Kong Street, and Dream Valley. Qin and Han palaces, Song Dynasty streets, Ming and Qing palaces, and modern trading ports are all gathered in one town, making walking through it feel like traveling back and forth between different dynasties. Films such as "Hero," "The Promise," and "Curse of the Golden Flower" were born in the Qin Palace, while hit palace dramas like "Palace," "Empresses in the Palace," and "Scarlet Heart" were mostly filmed in the Ming and Qing Palace Garden. It is a unique daily scene here to frequently bump into film crews at work on the streets and see extras dressed in ancient costumes passing by. Each attraction has distinct highlights: The Qin palace was built for filming "The emperor and the assassin," featuring imposing high platforms and grand halls—the iconic sword duel scene from "Hero" was shot here, now adapted into the live stunt show "Heroes' duel." The riverside scene at Qingming festival attraction brings Zhang Zeduan's Northern Song Bianliang to life, with rainbow bridges, Bian river, and Song-dressed NPCs roaming among taverns and teahouses; its signature performance "Dream of Bianliang" recreates bustling street life through ancient magic tricks. The Ming-Qing palace emulates Beijing's forbidden city with layered vermilion walls and golden roofs—familiar sights for fans of Qing dynasty dramas—while the multimedia show "Forbidden city chronicles" condenses centuries of imperial history. Guangzhou street·Hong Kong street revives old Canton and colonial Hong Kong (1840s-early 20th century), featuring the lively aquatic action show "Raging sea rivalry." Other areas include Dazhi temple, Pingyan cave dwellings, and Chinese cultural park—each offering unique exploration. The attractions are some distance apart, so you can usually only visit two or three in a day. If you have enough time, consider staying overnight: explore palaces and encounter film crews during the day, then head to the dream valley themed around nightlife in the evening. Besides amusement facilities, it features live performances, "The dream of Taiji" and "Mountain torrents", which are the highlights of Hengdian at night. The film studio has so many attractions that a 1-day tour may only cover 2-3 attractions. If time permits, we recommend staying overnight to explore at a leisurely pace and catch more shows—only then can you truly experience the charm of Hengdian.

My second visit to West Lake was great; the boat tour was excellent. The dock was easy to find, the staff were very friendly, provided clear explanations, and helped with any issues. There were also sightseeing buses, which were nice but a bit pricey. Taking the boat tour and then walking around was both perfectly fine.

At the summit, there's just a rock and a flat area, nothing special. On the other side, there's a temple to the God of Wealth with 1399 steps. You need to be very sincere to reach the top. Below are various Buddhist halls and temples, as well as some stone carvings of Buddha statues. The scenery is pleasant, with mountains, water, and forests.

Stepping into Tianyi Pavilion, the strongest impression isn't of a bustling, trendy tourist spot, but rather a quiet, profound atmosphere, imbued with the tranquility of a scholarly atmosphere. The guided tour was incredibly vivid and detailed; a guided explanation is essential to understanding the historical and cultural origins of this type of museum.
