Fenghuang Ancient Town, formerly known as Zhenxian City, covers approximately 10 square kilometers and is located east of the Wuling Mountains and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. It gets its name from the green hills that resemble a phoenix with outstretched wings. The ancient town is home to 28 ethnic groups, including the Miao, Han, and Tujia. Over 120 traditional Ming and Qing dynasty dwellings and 68 cultural relics remain, with bluestone streets and stilt houses along the Tuojiang River forming its iconic landscape.
Key attractions include:
Stilt House Clusters: These wooden structures, built along the Tuojiang River, embody the distinctive characteristics of Xiangxi folk houses.
Ancient City Towers: The well-preserved east gate, Shengheng Gate, and the north gate, Bihui Gate, are remnants of the Qing Dynasty stone city defense system.
Cultural Relics: 68 cultural relics and historic buildings, including the former residences of Shen Congwen and Xiong Xiling, showcase the diverse cultures of Han, Miao, and Tujia.
