The giant baby sculpture of "Son of the Earth" in the Guazhou Desert, Gansu Province, China, was designed and built at his own expense by Tsinghua University professor Dong Shubing, 15 meters long, 9 meters wide and4.8 meters high, integrating into the desert landscape with a leaning attitude. Its core meaning is warning of human dependence and protection of the natural environment : sculpture through the fragile sleeping image of infants, metaphorically human beings depend on earth resources like infants for survival; siteing deserts, visually displaying the consequences of ecological deterioration, calling for sustainable development.
