Malta is renowned for its exquisite structures. From the oldest temple in the world to the relatively new Parliament Building in the capital, Valletta, the island is full of fascinating buildings. If you enjoy architecture, Malta also offers a large number of palaces, baroque houses and churches. Depending on where you are on the island, you may stumble upon a magnificent castle that is well worth taking the time to see. Here are some of the most beautiful castles in Malta on a trip to Malta.
Fort St. Angelo
Formerly a seaside fortress, Fort St. Angelo dates back to the Middle Ages. Originally a castle, it was later rebuilt as a fortress by the Knights of St. John and served as a fortress for defence against the Turks during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. With Vittoriosa waterfront as its priority, the fortress has more or less remained as it was. The exterior has remained the same since it was rebuilt in the 1690s to the designs of the famous military architect Carlos de Grunberg. The fort served as a British military station between 1800 and 1979 and was classified as a stone ship and was known as HMS Egmont and HMS St Angelo. Today, the fort is open to all visitors, who can also enjoy a meal in the officers' lounge and buy some souvenirs.
