Trieste is located on the northeast coast of the Adriatic Sea, the northwest side of the Istrian Peninsula, and the top of the Bay of Trieste. It is the largest free port city in Italy. After World War II, it was governed by Yugoslavia and returned to Italy after 1954.
Today I will take you to visit the Italian Unity Square. This is the main square of Trieste and the largest seaside square in Europe. It is surrounded by off-white historical buildings on three sides and faces the bay on the other side. It looks very grand. It is located at the foot of Mount San Giusto and faces the Adriatic Sea. It was once the most important port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. At that time, it was not only a prosperous port city but also a center of music and literature. However, it gradually declined as it was incorporated into Italy.
There are two Unity Squares in Italy. This is the earliest and largest one. So generally, if you ask Italians where their Unity Square is, they will tell you that it is in Trieste. I have also been to the other one in Florence, which is indeed half the size. The square was built in the 19th century and is surrounded by government offices such as the Town Hall and the District Administration Building. The sea view on the opposite side is even more beautiful. There is a bronze statue of a flag-raiser on the shore, which is called the Liberation Monument. The most important thing here is the cruise home port, which can accommodate large cruise ships of tens of thousands of tons. I came to Trieste this time at the invitation of Costa, the largest cruise company in Italy, because the new ship Costa Venezia in the photo will make its maiden voyage in two days.
