Avanti West Coast upcoming engineering works 2026: Is my train running?
If you're planning a trip to Manchester Piccadilly, Liverpool Lime Street, Birmingham New Street, Preston, Carlisle, Glasgow Central or Edinburgh Waverley this spring, it's worth checking for Avanti West Coast engineering works before you book.

These are scheduled infrastructure upgrades (not industrial action) that tend to take place over long weekends like Easter, when fewer people use the trains to get to work. While there are always arrangements in place, you'll need to plan for longer journey times.

In this blog post, we break down all the planned Avanti West Coast engineering works day by day - and the alternative arrangements in place - so you know what to expect these coming long weekends.

Upcoming Avanti West Coast Easter 2026 engineering works

Friday 3rd April 2026 - Good Friday

Whether you’re kicking off the long weekend with a trip up north or heading south to see family, there are big changes across the Avanti West Coast network to be aware of.

Major disruption

Saturday 4th April 2026

If you’ve got plans for the Saturday of the Easter weekend, give yourself extra time - the Euston to Milton Keynes closure is still in place, and there are further works affecting routes into Scotland.

Major disruption

  • London Euston to Milton Keynes Central (all day): Same as on Good Friday. The line will be closed in both directions all day due to a six-day block of engineering works running from 3rd to 8th April. No Avanti West Coast trains will run on this section. Amended services will operate from Milton Keynes Central northwards instead, running to Manchester Piccadilly via Stoke-on-Trent (also calling at Rugby), Liverpool Lime Street (also calling at Nuneaton), and Preston via Nuneaton (also calling at Rugby, Stafford and Crewe). A Rugby to Preston service will run via Birmingham New Street, and a Crewe to Holyhead service will also operate. If you’re heading to or from central London, you can take the free replacement bus between Milton Keynes Central and Bedford, then use East Midlands Railway or Thameslink trains between Bedford and London St Pancras International at no extra cost.
  • Preston to Edinburgh/Glasgow Central (all day): Lines will be closed between Preston and Oxenholme Lake District, and between Carlisle and Edinburgh/Glasgow Central via Lockerbie. A train will run every 2 hours non-stop between Preston and Carlisle, diverted via the Settle and Carlisle line. Replacement buses will run between Carlisle and Motherwell, and you can use TransPennine Express replacement buses between Carlisle and Edinburgh.

Sunday 5th April 2026

For an Easter Sunday day out, allow plenty of extra travel time - the same closures from Saturday are still going, plus a wider stretch of the northern routes will be affected.

Major disruption

  • London Euston to Milton Keynes Central (all day): Same as on Saturday.
  • Preston to Edinburgh/Glasgow Central (all day): The closure is wider than on Saturday. Lines will be closed between Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan North Western, between Preston and Oxenholme Lake District, and between Carlisle and Edinburgh/Glasgow Central via Lockerbie. A train will run every 2 hours non-stop between Preston and Carlisle, diverted via the Settle and Carlisle line. Replacement buses will run between Carlisle and Glasgow Central, and you can use TransPennine Express replacement buses between Carlisle and Edinburgh.

Monday 6th April 2026 - Easter Monday

It’s the last day of the long weekend, and if you’re heading back from a few days away, just be aware that the Euston to Milton Keynes closure is still going. There are also works between Carlisle and Scotland.

Major disruption

  • London Euston to Milton Keynes Central (all day): Same as the past few days. The line will be closed in both directions all day due to a six-day block of engineering works running from 3rd to 8th April. No Avanti West Coast trains will run on this section. Amended services will operate from Milton Keynes Central northwards instead, running to Manchester Piccadilly via Stoke-on-Trent (also calling at Rugby), Liverpool Lime Street (also calling at Nuneaton), and Carlisle via Nuneaton (also calling at Rugby, Stafford and Crewe).
  • Carlisle to Edinburgh/Glasgow Central (all day): Lines will be closed between Carlisle and Edinburgh/Glasgow Central via Lockerbie. Replacement buses will run between Carlisle and Motherwell, and you can use TransPennine Express replacement buses between Carlisle and Edinburgh.

Upcoming Avanti West Coast May 2026 engineering works

Saturday 2nd May 2026

If you’re making the most of the early May bank holiday with a weekend away, here’s what you need to know:

Major disruption

  • London Euston to Milton Keynes Central (all day): Due to engineering works reducing the number of available lines, an hourly service will run between the following stations: London Euston and Liverpool Lime Street, London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly (via Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield), London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly (via Crewe and Wilmslow), London Euston and Glasgow Central (via Tamworth and Rugeley Trent Valley), London Euston and Birmingham New Street, and London Euston and Blackpool North/Glasgow Central/Edinburgh (via Birmingham New Street).
  • Crewe to Holyhead (all day): Services between London Euston and Holyhead will run between Crewe and Holyhead only.

Sunday 3rd May 2026

There’s a bit more disruption on Sunday than Saturday, so keep an eye on your route if you’re heading to Liverpool, Edinburgh or Motherwell.

Major disruption

  • London Euston to Milton Keynes Central (all day): Due to engineering works reducing the number of available lines, an hourly service will run between the following stations (unless stated otherwise): London Euston and Crewe (via Tamworth and Rugeley Trent Valley), London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly via Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield (this service will run half-hourly), London Euston and Glasgow Central (via Tamworth, Crewe, Manchester and Bolton), and London Euston and Warrington Bank Quay (via Crewe and Birmingham New Street).
  • Crewe to Holyhead (all day): Services between London Euston and Holyhead will run between Crewe and Holyhead only.
  • London Euston to Edinburgh (all day): Services will run between Preston and Edinburgh only.
  • London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street (all day): Due to engineering works in the Liverpool area, trains will run between London Euston and Crewe only. Replacement buses will operate between Crewe and Liverpool Lime Street.
  • Motherwell (all day): Avanti West Coast trains will not call at Motherwell. You can use alternative services between Motherwell and Glasgow Central instead.

Monday 4th May 2026 - (early May bank holiday)

Heading back home after the long weekend? Here’s what to plan for on this bank holiday Monday.

Major disruption

  • London Euston to Milton Keynes Central (all day): Same as on Saturday 2nd May. Due to engineering works reducing the number of available lines, an hourly service will run between the following stations: London Euston and Liverpool Lime Street, London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly (via Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield), London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly (via Crewe and Wilmslow), London Euston and Glasgow Central (via Tamworth and Rugeley Trent Valley), and London Euston and Blackpool North/Glasgow Central/Edinburgh (via Birmingham New Street).
  • Crewe to Holyhead (all day): Same as on Saturday, 2nd May. Services between London Euston and Holyhead will run between Crewe and Holyhead only.

Minor disruption

  • Late-night diversions near Rugby: The 21:04 Crewe to London Euston and the 22:15 Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston will both be diverted via Northampton, so your journey will take a bit longer than usual.

Saturday 23rd May 2026

No Avanti West Coast engineering works planned. Trains will run as normal across the network.

Sunday 24th May 2026

Sunday is the busiest day for engineering works over the late May bank holiday weekend. Here’s what you need to know:

Major disruption

  • London Euston to Glasgow Central via Nuneaton (all day): Trains will be diverted via an alternative route between Crewe and Preston.
  • London Euston to Glasgow Central via Birmingham New Street (all day): Trains will run between London Euston and Crewe only.
  • London Euston to Edinburgh (all day): Services will run between Preston and Edinburgh only.
  • London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly (all day): Services will be reduced to 2 trains per hour in each direction.
  • Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan North Western (all day): Trains will not call at either station. Replacement buses will run between Crewe, Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan North Western to link up with trains at Crewe.

Monday 25th May 2026 (late May bank holiday)

Good news - it’ll be a mostly quiet day on the Avanti West Coast network, with just a few late-night and early-morning tweaks to be aware of.

Minor disruption

  • Late-evening diversions near Rugby: After about 23:00, trains may be diverted via Northampton, adding extra time to your journey.
  • Early-morning Blackpool North to Crewe: The 05:35 departure from Blackpool North will start from Preston at 06:00 instead.
  • Late-night London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street: The 22:00 departure will terminate at Crewe. A replacement bus will run from Crewe to Liverpool Lime Street, calling at Runcorn, departing at 00:25.

What to do if your Avanti West Coast route is affected by engineering works?

If your journey is affected by Avanti West Coast engineering works, the good news is you can usually still get to where you need to go. That's because the operator always puts on alternative services and workarounds. Here’s what you might come across:
  • Rail replacement buses between closed stations.
  • Split or truncated services (for example, trains running from Milton Keynes Central northwards only).
  • Diversions via alternative lines.
  • Extended journey times.
  • Altered first and last train times.
  • Reduced frequencies on Sundays and bank holidays.

Here are a few tips to keep your journey on track:

  • Build in extra time for long-distance trips. Journeys between London Euston and cities like Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow can take a lot longer when replacement buses and diversions are in play, especially on the Euston to Milton Keynes Central stretch.
  • Avoid tight onward connections. If you’ve got a connecting train or bus at Manchester Piccadilly, Liverpool Lime Street or Glasgow Central, give yourself a generous buffer in case services are running behind schedule.
  • Book your tickets after the amended timetable goes live. Avanti West Coast typically publishes updated information 12 weeks before the works, so you'll be able to see alternative arrangements and total travel time.
  • Think about an overnight stay. If late-evening disruptions affect your return journey, it might be worth booking a hotel rather than risking a long, disrupted trip home. Browse hotels in Manchester, Liverpool or Edinburgh on Trip.com.

Stations most affected by Avanti West Coast engineering works

If you travel regularly on the West Coast Main Line, it helps to know which parts of the route are most frequently affected by engineering works.
  • London Euston is where all Avanti West Coast services start and finish, so any closures near the station can have a domino effect on the whole network. The Euston to Milton Keynes Central stretch is one of the most common sections to shut during bank holidays - when this happens, you’ll typically need to pick up a replacement bus to Bedford and use East Midlands Railway or Thameslink into London St Pancras International instead.
  • Birmingham New Street is the busiest junction on the network, with Avanti West Coast routes to Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh all passing through the major station. Works here or along the Trent Valley line between Rugby and Stafford can force trains onto alternative routes and add significant travel time to your journey.
  • Further north, the section of track between Preston and Carlisle is regularly affected, especially over Easter and May bank holidays. When this stretch is closed, Avanti West Coast typically diverts trains via the Settle and Carlisle line or lays on replacement buses between Carlisle and Motherwell. If you’re heading to Glasgow Central or Edinburgh Waverley, keep an eye on this section of the route.
  • Liverpool Lime Street also sees disruption during bank holiday engineering works. Closures in the Liverpool area often mean trains terminate at Crewe, with replacement buses covering the last leg into the city.

Frequently asked questions about Avanti West Coast engineering works

Are Avanti West Coast tickets valid on rail replacement buses?

Yes. Your existing ticket - paper, e-ticket or season ticket - is valid on any replacement bus service running during Avanti West Coast engineering works. Just show it to the driver when you board.

How far in advance are West Coast Main Line engineering works announced?

Avanti West Coast and Network Rail typically confirm engineering works around 12 weeks ahead, although timetables may still see changes up to 2 to 4 weeks before travel.

Are London Euston closures common during bank holidays?

It's rare for London Euston to close entirely, but there's often a reduced service in and out of the station over Easter and the May bank holidays. When the Euston to Milton Keynes Central line closes, you can use the free replacement bus to Bedford and pick up East Midlands Railway or Thameslink trains to London St Pancras International.

Can I get a refund if I choose not to travel?

If Avanti West Coast engineering works significantly affect your journey, you can usually apply for a refund of your unused ticket. Advance tickets booked before the works were scheduled are normally eligible too - just check the terms of your fare type when you book.

Do engineering works usually affect Sunday services?

Yes. Sunday is when most planned engineering works take place, as it’s typically the day with the fewest passengers. If you’re travelling on the West Coast Main Line on a Sunday, it’s always a good idea to check for Avanti West Coast disruption before setting off.
