A brief history of the British Rail Class 777 Metro
Ordered in 2016, construction of the Class 777 began in 2018, with the first unit officially entering service on 23 January 2023. These new trains are replacing the ageing Class 507 and Class 508 units, which have been in operation since 1978. In total, 53 units have been commissioned, including seven battery electric multiple units (BEMUs) capable of running on non-electrified lines.
How has accessibility been improved?
The Class 777 introduces significant improvements to passenger accessibility and convenience:
- Level boarding: A new sliding step bridges the gap between the train and the platform, allowing level access for all passengers, including those with reduced mobility, prams, and bicycles.
- Door operation: Unlike the previous fleet, the doors will not open automatically. Instead, passengers must press the external or internal button to open them.
- Lighting indicators: The door lighting system turns green when safe to board and red when the doors are closing, accompanied by an audible warning.
- One continuous carriage: The open-plan layout and wider aisles make it easier to move throughout the train.
