You pat your front pockets, your back pockets, your jacket pockets. You frantically check your bag and scan the ground around you – it’s not there. Luckily, if you leave something behind on a ScotRail train, there’s a good chance you will get it back, as their Lost Property team does everything they can to reunite you with your lost items.

Whether it’s your phone, your keys or any other belonging, losing something on a train is a stressful experience, but if you follow the steps we’ve outlined below, you can give yourself the best chance at finding what you lost.

How do I get my lost item back from ScotRail?

ScotRail suggests calling their Lost Property team to report items lost on their trains. ScotRail’s lost property contact number is 03301 092 833, which you can call to begin the process of tracking down your lost item.

When you call them, make sure to have all the necessary details ready to go. This includes the departure and arrival stations of your journey, the terminal station of your train (if different from the arrival station), the date and time of your train and where you last saw your item (train seat, bathroom, etc.).

You should also have as many details about your lost item as possible – colour, brand, model. Any identifying features are very helpful to mention too – if it's a phone, the IMEI number and details about the case and background image are helpful. If it’s a bag, mention something that might be in it, or a keyring it has.

Please note that ScotRail may charge a small fee for reuniting you with your items.

If you lost something on trains terminating at Edinburgh Waverley or Glasgow Central, Network Rail handles these lost items, so you will need to report your item as lost on lostproperty.org. Here you will need to select details about your journey and lost item from lists and include all the information we’ve suggested above.

LostProperty also charges a fee for items returned to you. It’s also worth noting that no matter who manages your lost item tracking process, it may take a few days for your item to turn up in the system.

Where can I pick up my lost item from ScotRail?

ScotRail sends most items left on their trains or at their stations to Glasgow Queen Street station. You can collect your lost item from here from Monday to Sunday, 07:00 to 22:00.

Unfortunately, ScotRail cannot post your items to you.

If your missing item was handled by LostProperty.org, they will contact you to let you know where it is being stored. For example, if it is being stored at Edinburgh Waverley, your item may be held at the Left Luggage office near the Calton Road entrance on Platform 2. It is open from 07:00 to 23:00, all week long.
