Basingstoke to London Waterloo: Everything you need to know

We've got all the information you need to know about the Basingstoke to London train. Read our guide to find out how to book tickets at a good price, whether it's a good idea to commute into the city from Basingstoke, what to do in London and even how to get to Heathrow if you have a flight to catch.

How much is a train ticket from Basingstoke to London?

The Basingstoke to London train ticket price can be as low as £25.20, but it can vary. You may be able to save money by taking a slower, indirect train, for example. It's also a good idea to avoid peak time trains unless you are commuting - they are usually busier than trains at other times of day, and they can also be more expensive.

If you like to travel in luxury, then First Class can offer a better experience, but it's worth noting that it will increase the cost of your tickets, so you might want to avoid it if you're looking to save money.

Split Tickets are a great option to save on the ticket price. When you split your tickets, it means you buy tickets that take you from A to B, then B to C, rather than a single ticket from A to C. You stay on the same train, though!

Happily, our excellent Journey Planner will work all that out for you and offer you Split Tickets if it can save you money. Why not give it a try now?

Which train line is Basingstoke on?

The Basingstoke to London train route is part of the South West Main Line. The line begins at London Waterloo station and continues to Weymouth on the main line, with branches heading to Portsmouth, Reading and Exeter. Services are typically run by South Western Railway.

Before it reaches its destination, the Basingstoke to London train stops at a few important stations. Trains travel through Clapham Junction, Wimbledon and Woking before reaching Basingstoke.

Is Basingstoke commutable to London?

If you're thinking of commuting, it's a good idea to check if a season ticket might be a better option for you. If you travel frequently, it could be a big money saver. An added benefit of an annual season ticket is that it gives railcard-style discounts for you and your family on a huge chunk of the train network. Have a look at our comprehensive guide to season tickets to find out more.

Basingstoke is close to the city of Winchester and the town of Reading, which means there are plenty more train connections that can take you to other parts of the network - great if you're a family that works in different towns.

Can I travel from Basingstoke to London Heathrow?

If you have a flight to catch, you may need to plan a route from Basingstoke to London Heathrow. The simple way to make this journey is to head to Reading, then change onto the Elizabeth Line towards London, and change again at Hayes and Harlington to take the Heathrow branch line. What can I do if my Basingstoke to London train is delayed?

Delay Repay is a system that kicks in when there is a Basingstoke to London train disruption. If the journey to your final destination is delayed by more than 15 minutes because of something within South West Trains' control, it will refund you part of the cost of the ticket. If your train is seriously delayed, you might even receive a full refund.

It's worth noting that the rules can be somewhat complex, particularly if multiple train companies are involved. Check our page dedicated to South Western Railway Delay Repay here.

What attractions should I visit in London?

London is one of the world's great cities, so it's no surprise that there is a seemingly endless list of places to see. From the world-class museums to niche arts venues, there's something for everyone. Here are a few ideas for your next trip to the capital.

If you've never visited it before, a trip to the Imperial War Museum is essential. It performs the important function of commemorating conflict in the current and previous centuries and ensuring their lessons remain relevant. Conflicts that changed the world are brought to life via exhibitions drawn from a collection of over 1 million items.

The museum houses the giant machinery of war (including two enormous naval guns that were fired in WWII outside the entrance) but also teases out the human impact of conflicts by displaying the personal artefacts of soldiers and civilians that have been affected by them.

Moving from conflict to care, the Florence Nightingale Museum tells the story of the world's most famous nurse. Florence Nightingale's importance is hard to overstate - she saved countless lives in both war and peacetime. Nightingale also founded the first modern school of nursing, which still trains nurses today, over 160 years later!

The museum is appropriately located adjacent to St Thomas' Hospital (where Nightingale worked) on the South Bank of the River Thames.

After all that history, why not throw yourself into some up-to-the-minute, in-your-face culture? If that sounds good, then head to The Vaults, but expect your senses to be assaulted. As its name might suggest, it's located right around the back of Waterloo Station, under the railway arches, and it has an entrance that you might miss unless you know it's there. It's an immersive theatre and alternative arts venue that puts on some wild shows. Forget sitting in respectful silence while actors prance around on stage: here, the actors get involved out in the open. There are only a limited number of seats for a small programme of performances, but it's likely to be memorable. Plus, it's located right next to Waterloo, so you can jump straight on a train once it's all over!
