Is it cheaper to take a train or bus in London?

Whether it is cheaper to take a train or a bus in London largely comes down to where you want to go. If you want to go somewhere served by a London Overground or National Rail route, then it might be cheapest and easiest to take a train, but some places can be more easily reached by buses, which are frequent and plentiful in the capital. The London Underground is also a popular option, but it can be more expensive than the bus.

Bus and tube fares are set at a standard rate, and there's a 'cap', which limits the maximum you'll pay each day and week if you use the same Oyster card or contactless payment card to 'touch in' on each journey.

What can I do in London?

There's no end of exciting things to experience in London. We've collated just a small selection of options to enjoy, but there are plenty more things to do. Have a look through our London Local Travel Guide page - it's full of places to see and stay, plus some great options for top eateries!

At the top of the list of things London is famous for around the world must be its status as a royal city, and you can immerse yourself in a thousand years of history by visiting the Historic Royal Palaces. Kensington Palace is a grand palace overlooking an enormous landscaped park. It was the birthplace of Queen Victoria and is the current official residence of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Make your way to Notting Hill Gate on the tube for easy access.

A walk through those manicured gardens will take you to the Royal Albert Hall. This concert hall has an eye-catching domed construction that is reminiscent of the Colosseum. It's the home of the famous BBC Proms, and it hosts other concerts and events throughout the year.

The drive to build the Royal Albert Hall came, as you might guess, from Queen Victoria's Consort, Prince Albert. No surprise that one of London's most iconic museums was named after them both. The Victoria and Albert (The V&A for short) is a little further on through South Kensington. It's by far the largest museum in the UK, and it houses some of the most extensive collections of art in the world. The Renaissance sculpture and East Asian collections are well worth seeing, and it holds in excess of 19,000 items of Islamic art and culture from the 7th Century to the start of the 20th.

This corner of London houses many more museums, including the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. In fact, it might be worth booking a hotel in Kensington so you can fit it all in!

When it's time to head back to the station for your return journey, many of the tube stations in the area, such as South Kensington or Gloucester Road, will take you back to Kings Cross on the Circle line.
