The Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is also one of 10 national historical landmarks. Unlike a typical lighthouse, it is hexagonal, relatively low and above the water. It is maintained by the US Coast Guard and is still guiding ships in the area. It is open to the public only in the summer.
