St. Matthew's Church in central Berlin is located in the south of Tilgato Gardens, the only historic building in the center of the cultural square today. The original church was built in 1846 but destroyed in World War II. The exterior walls of the church were rebuilt from 1956 to 1960, and the surrounding area was newly developed into a cultural square at the junction of East and West Berlin.
