The Shoes on the Danube Bank is a memorial erected to honour the Jews who were massacred by Fascist Hungarian militia belonging to the Arrow Cross Party in Budapest during the Second World War.The Jews were ordered to take off their shoes and were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away. The shoes which were valuable during that time were resold by the militia after the massacre. The memorial represents their shoes left behind on the bank. 👞

Every time I pass by here, I always feel inexplicably sentimental. In the past, history staged a massacre here. Men, women, and children were not spared. History is blood-stained on the Danube. But it continues to this day. The problems of human rights and racial discrimination still exist😔😢
The Danube River is 2,850 kilometers long and is the second largest river in Europe after the Volga River. It flows from west to east. It originates in the Alps in Germany and flows through Germany.
Hungarian sculptor Bouer Gyullo decided to create a sculpture composed of 60 pairs of iron shoes to commemorate the 600,000 Hungarian Jews who were killed by fascism, and to remind people not to forget history. In the days of shortage, shoes and glasses were expensive items, and the Nazis would kill them to take off their glasses and shoes before they were shot, and then throw their bodies into the river. The sculpture shoes were large and small, men and women, old and young, and told of the heavy history. But iron shoes have been continuously damaged and defaced by extremists, and now there are more than 50 more...
A must see. To understand the history of Budapest is to understand the Hungarian Arrow Cross Party’s partnership with the Nazis. To see these shows and know that real people experienced such torture due to difference in religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds is insane! And to think who resisted and who was complacent? Please bear witness.
Very special carving, memorial significance, very sad
A poignant Reminder to the Jews in Budapest during the second world war. Conveniently located
