Heart of Midlothian Mosaic

The Heart of Midlothian is a heart-shaped pattern in the middle of a road, located on the High Street in Edinburgh, Scotland, part of the Royal Mile, near the west gate of St Giles Cathedral, the Heart of Midlothian marks the 15th century trust The site of Tolbooth, which had been demolished in 1817, was the city's administrative center, prison and a site for public executions. Tobot appears in Sir Walter Scott's novel The Heart of Midlothian (published in 1818). The city currently combines the former West Lothian and East Lothian, but it was the administrative centre of Midlothian and used to be known as "Edinburghshire". Visitors to Edinburgh will notice that people often spit at the heart of Midlothian. Some explanations suggest that this will bring good luck, but originally it was just a sign of contempt for the former prison. There is also a legend that a man spitting on his heart was destined to return to Edinburgh one day.
