On the edge of Hunan province lies a quaint little town, mysterious both in look and nature. Fenghuang Ancient Town (also know as Phoenix Ancient Town) seems to hold an air of intrigue and elegance as you wander through its alleys. While a lot has transformed to cater to tourist, the view is still one that will stay with us for years to come.⠀
In this little town, with a history spanning 1,300 years, Tuo Jiang River is a prominent feature for locals, who we saw either washing clothes, drifting on boats or catching fish. ⠀
Set against the stunning backdrop of houses built on wooden stilts, the Tuo Jiang River is a source of life for those living in Fenghuang Ancient Town. It stretches from northwest to southeast of the town, and often sees many a riverboat floating idly by as fishermen make their way to and from a long day at work.⠀

A fairytale called 凤凰 Fenghuang (Phoenix Town) 😍
➡️ Located in Hunan Province and with more than 300 years of history, this town was regarded as the most beautiful town in China by New Zealand writer Rewi Alley and added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on March 28, 2008 in the Cultural category.
In fact, magical, enchanting and mystical are only a few of the words to describe walking by the small alleys, riverside walking paths of this ancient gem. 🤩
The region is also home to the “Miao” people, a colorful and culturally- and historically-rich ethnic minority that lives primarily in southern China.
One of the most beautiful places I have seen in China so far was the ancient Phoenix town. This old town with wooden buildings and bridges looked absolutely beautiful on a cold winter day. With misty mountains on the background, evening lights and stone pathways I had the feeling I am in a fairy tale or in a movie. I am in love with this place. Recommend for a weekend, absolutely worth visiting😍
Fenghuang Ancient Town (Phoenix Town) is a peaceful town just outside of Zhangjiajie. It can be done within a day if you use the local bus instead of taking a tour. We took a bus from the Zhangjiajie central bus station. Costs 80 RMB per trip and takes around 4h15min to get there. The journey back by bus was quicker, around 3h45min. They have loads of spots to buy snacks and water, and a few Chinese restaurants within the town. A lovely day outing! #fenghuangancienttown #chinatravel #ancienttowns #daytrip #explorechina #phoenixtown
Fenghuang Ancient Town gained fame after author Shen Cong Wen's famous piece "Border Town". The town was built during the reign of Emperor Kangxi during the Qing Dynasty. The residents living there now are mainly from the Miao and Tujia ethnic minority. Ranking as the top ancient town in China, Fenghuang Ancient Town is a guidebook for people to know the past life in the pre-modernization period. Wooden houses and stone roads are the typical scenes here. The scenery after rain or in the misty morning is like a traditional chinese painting. When the town lights up at night, it feels like you are immersed in a fairyland. It is recommended to stay for a night to fully enjoy this town.
